Does anyone recall a female duet from the late 70's early 80's named salal, one of not both were Canadian, they sang a song I have been trying to get the words of for years and I would dearly love to contact either of them

Cheers

Raggytash

Nick - what was the song you were after? (I've had a quick look through your 800 or so posts and couldn't see the request thread).

Were Salal anything to do with Sara Grey and Ellie Ellis, who were the only non-British regulars that I remember from around that time (though Sara isn't Canadian, I don't know about Ellie)?

Mick

I probably put it on as a guest back then, it was a role reversal song where a sailor returns from sea, sits alone under the shade of a tree and is ravaged by a passing woman and he ends up lamentaing "mother i am quite undone"

It starts :-

One fine summers day a woman went walking
down by the river so gently and free
and there she espied a beautiful sailor
sitting alone in the shade of a tree
she boldly stepped up to this young man
pray tell to me from whence you came
for my eyes have not feasted on such beauty
and may never do so again

Oh madam I am a lonely sailor
recently returned from sea ............

The two woman who sang it performed it deadpan and I recall it being brilliantly funny ........ and it's been bugging me for nearly 25 years !

Something about this rings a bell. Could it be a Grit Laskin song? (Canadian connection)

This wouldn't be the duet that converted to Islam and started a food chain called Halal Salal, would it.

All you ever wanted to know about salal...except the song requested above. But the name of the group would lead me to suspect they might be from British Columbia.

...oh, and if you become a Mudcat member (quick, easy, and spam-free), you can send a message to Metchosin, who lives in B.C., and might know something of them.

Aloha,
Mark

I am a member on my home workstation but not at work, I'll try Metocosin later this weekend (thanks) I think Salal may come from Sally and Alison (he said guessing wildly, and not the plant) ;-)

Mick,

Have to say I've never heard of Grit, but I'll see if can find anything on the web

John .......... you really are a sad case :-)

It definitely was Salal who were at Towersey at the same time and one of them was a Brit who had emigrated

Someone has repeatedly asked for this song since January 1998. See the thread Role reversal, woman has evil way with sailor and follow the links to the other threads. I don't think the song has ever been found. But I think the name of the duo, Salal, is new information.

Since MC Fat confirmed they performed at Towersey at that time, did you talk to Towersey organisers to see if anyone could think of someone who might have old records (names, mailing lists, receipts) in a closet somewhere?

Thanks for that Semi Sub, I appreciate your efforts I also noted your previous comment about the organisers of Towersey, good little festival when I attended in 1980 and 1981 (I lived in Oxford at the time) but I don't recall Salal being on the guest list, however I will follow it up

Thanks again

Hi Guest 999

Many years ago the duet of two women sang a song which went

One fine summers day I woman went walking
down by the river so gentle and free
and there she espied a beautiful sailor
sitting alone in the shade of a tree
she boldly stepped up to this young man
pray tell me me from whence you came
for my eyes have not featsed on such beauty
and may never do so again

the story gooes on to tell how she ravishes him, has her wicked way with him and leaves him forlorn bewailing his plight, one line has him crying "oh mother I am quite undone"

I've been after the words for 30 years, maybe one day ....

Raggytash:

I have been looking for this for about a week now. Mr Goole is NO help. I have just sent a message to two gals who might be able to help. If they are able to, I hope to have a really neat Christmas present for you. However, do NOT get yer hopes up. This is a long shot. As a btw, the song is now driving me nuts. I can't imagine YOUR state of mind after 30 years. I ain't gonna quit looking, but don't hold yer breath.

Thanks 999, I won't hold my breath but if you or anyone else could come up with the words I would be very grateful, the days of tearing hair out for this have gone but the curiousity remains.

Cheers

The way Raggytash's search gets under our skins, too, makes a fine case study in meme propagation.

Young Buchan lately posted in the Floating Lyrics thread a different role-reversal ballad which may ease the pangs of waiting for Salal season to return.

Would it be possible for you to share the lyrics here? Or did Ms. Hazelwood ask for them not to be distributed?
