My wife Anne will be in New York in about 10 days time and has been told by a friend that there is a fantastic Gospel Church service on Sundays at a location with a name akin to Mount Buller?? The friend, who is otherwise unmusical, claims it was her family's highlight of a recent round world trip. If the service day is other than Sunday Anne has a nymber of days in NY.

There is nothing like this here in Australia - to the best of my knowledge - so would appreciate any local advice please.

Best Regards,
John

There is a wonderful church in Sparkill NY that does Gospel as part of its regular wknd service. It is about 25 min. north of NYC by car. Whether it is open to the general public I know not. I do know that I have gone there for some wonderful gospel concerts that they sometimes put on. St Charles AME Zion is the name of the church

Hope this helps somehow.

Here is an address, though I don't know if this is the right church--your wife wants to hear "sanctified gospel" music, which is performed in a number of different black churches, including Baptist, AME(African Methodist Episcopal) and Pentacostal--Not all black churches use this type of music, so it is good to check before going--

Mt Nebo Baptist Church
(212) 866-7880 1883 7th Ave
New York, NY

Some other good bets would be:

1. Mother Zion AME Church
Similar to the AME congregation, in 1796, James Varick and 30 other members splintered from the Methodist Episcopal Church due to racism; they chose not to join the AME Church headquartered in Philadelphia, due to procedural differences; members built their own edifice in 1801 under the name John Street Methodist Church now affectionately called "Mother Zion" for short; the church continued to be led by a white minister until 1820; Mother Zion served as an Underground Railroad station and counted Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Frederick Douglass as members; current edifice designed by George W Foster, Jr.; Sunday worship 11a; 140 West 137th Street near Adam Clayton Powell Blvd; 212-234-1545; http://www.motherafricanmethodistezchurch.com

2. Abyssinian Baptist Church
Segregation in a white Baptist church led Ethiopian merchants and one white to found this church in 1808; they named it after ancient Ethiopia; the church moved from lower Manhattan to Greenwich Village to West 40th Street to this location; current edifice was designed by Charles W Bolton and opened in 1923; Powerful civil rights leaders Samuel Proctor, Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. held the pulpit before today's pastor Dr Calvin O Butts, III; Sunday worship 9a & 11a and weekly breakfasts at the church's Abyssinian Development Corporation offices; 132 Odell Clark Place (formerly 138th Street) between Malcolm X Blvd & Adam Clayton Powell Blvd; 212-862-7474 http://www.abyssinian.org

3. Saint Phillip's Protestant Episcopal Church
The church was founded 1809 and was the first African American church to move into Harlem; the current edifice was built in 1917 with New York's earliest black architects-- Vertner W Tandy and George W Foster Jr; pastor Dr Nathan Wright, Jr heads the new congregation of Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church located here; 134th Street between Frederick Douglass blvd and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd; 212-678-4284

4. Salem United Methodist Episcopal Church
Began as a mission under St Marks Methodist Episcopal Church in 1881; Salem was split from the church in 1902 when it moved to a 232 West 124th Street, but a fire soon destroyed it; growth of church congregation forced them to move in 1908 to 102-104 W 133rd St; continuing its growth pattern, in 1924 the church had to move to a its current edifice; the church features four choirs; Sunday worship 11a; 2190 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd near 130th Street; 212-678-2700

Again, as I have not been to any of these, I would check, just to be absolutely sure, though all are famous churhes--the Abyssinian Baptist is particularly well known, as it was the home church of Adam Clayton Powell, Sr and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., who were the most influential and best known black leaders of their time.

Also, services in some black churches are day long affairs(though I doubt it at these), so she should make sure she knows what she is getting into before she goes--

Thanks Bill and M Ted. I lost communication with Anne and was just a little too late for her time in NYC. Many thanks for your help.

I ended up taking my two sons to Darwin for the Top Half Folk Festival - well worth doing, except for the abrupt change in weather upon arrival home.

Regards, John
