Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 12 Jun 06 - 10:52 AM Oh the Root Beer guy was a big hit at TSF this year! Lotsa folks talked about how great is product was. I didn;t try it myself. I stick strictly to water in that heat, when I'm singing. You come out next year SRS. Heat or no; there's shade, and cool drinks! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 10 Jun 06 - 10:11 PM That heat didn't go away yet; you folks over at the festival really heated up the environment here! Funny thing, yesterday I was on my way to Dallas on the local commuter train between Fort Worth and Dallas and a couple of fellows got in and we started talking. The older one I spoke with was visiting from his home in Tyler, but said he'd been here recently, at the Scottish festival at UTA. Small world. He is the guy who sold what sounds like a superior variety of custom root beer made by his family. With as hot as it was last week, I bet he made a killing on Sunday! Evidently his business consists of attending this kind of festival and shows just to sell root beer and it's subsidiary foods (floats, etc.). Two reasons to go next year--to hear Jed again and try out some of that root beer! SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 10 Jun 06 - 09:16 AM HISE? What the hell is HISE??? My typing really sucks! As if it warrants correcting; it should read: "but I hid them under some baggy pants." |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 09 Jun 06 - 11:19 PM I dug out an Beef Brothers pic ... my legs were skinny then too - but I hise them under some baggy pants. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 07 Jun 06 - 09:06 AM I guess they are NOT the legs of a Beef Brother, perhaps it was length that got me the name! John is a very very fine fiddler and a sweet man. I wrote a song to one of John Taylor's melodies. The first time he heard it was on-stage, while he was playing with me. I wasn't sure if he'd like it - but he was so thrilled, I thought he was going to kiss me! I played quite a bit with Brian. We're plotting another project - probably for 07. Brian, Alasdair Fraser and I did a little short set at the festival opener. I was between the two of them - what a treat! They challenge and drive one another ... it was something to behold. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 07 Jun 06 - 01:48 AM Jeez, Jed, you've got skinny legs! How'd you ever become a Beef Brother? BTW, you appear to be holding your own with 2 of my favorite people. John Taylor's a helluva fiddler, isn't he? And Brian isn't so bad... Seamus |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 06 Jun 06 - 05:59 PM a better picture ... again, left to right: Brian, Jed, John. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 06 Jun 06 - 08:20 AM Ah, you're right, SRS; Sunday's heat was torturous for any human, no matter your family origins! Alasdair Fraser ended up dumping Natalie Haas into the ice water trough at the end of the weekend, in some high spirited horse play back stage. The two of them were fully clothed and absolutely soaked to the skin. After a full day of roasting, it looked like a good idea! BUT the music and the craic really were grand! I'd love to see them change the date to a more suitable outdoor time ... but I don't suppose that will happen. I haven't seen the numbers yet - but there were fewer people in attendance this year. I'm sure they still hit 30,000 or so - but fewer then last year. I suspect the 100 degree heat on Sunday dampened a few spirits! I hope you make it next year, though ... |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Jun 06 - 01:00 AM Jed, Each year I keep meaning to go, and each year my kids have a vortex of activities swirling around that are a total distraction. If I'd gotten an early enough start on Saturday I'd have made the trip--it was a nice day, but alas, it was nearly 8pm when we realized we should have gone over. This Scandihoovian doesn't hold up in prolonged hot weather so Sunday would have been torturous! Maybe next year? SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 05 Jun 06 - 11:34 AM A pic from one of the cooler moments (it was still just below 90 degrees on-stage - 32 Celcius) - CLICK Left to right is; Brian McNeill, me, John Taylor. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 04 Jun 06 - 10:58 PM It was hotter 'en hell today. Yesterday was 8 degrees coller - it only hit 92! Man today we just baked ... under the shade of tents - but it was HOT!!! The music was grand! Heat or no. I had a fine few hours of music with my friends, Ed Miller, John Taylor and Brian McNeill. Played a bit more with Alasdair too ... lots of on-stage "jamming" not a lot of Mudcat interest - but we had good crowds and I'm already looking forward to next year. But there're a few good festivals in the pipeline this year, as yet. And hopefully some moderate Temps. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: balladeer Date: 03 Jun 06 - 11:19 AM Jed: I'm sorry I couldn't be with youall in the midst of those happy crowds, but I am enjoying the mental picture of you playing your heart out in 100% weather. Joanne |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: Celtaddict Date: 03 Jun 06 - 01:31 AM Spaw, don't laugh. At my older brother's Bar Mitzvah there was a large family group in tartan kippeh. And I could send you a picture of my younger brother in kilt, boots, and Akubra. |

Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 03 Jun 06 - 12:21 AM It was pleasantly NOT hot tonight. Very unusual! I had great, but short set with Brian and Alasdair. Too much fun! Promises to be a grand weekend. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Jun 06 - 09:07 PM The school has changed its name, so the abbreviated reference is no longer "UTA" but "UT Arlington." It should still be easy to find, however. Most of the road signs haven't changed. I don't think there has been a year when this event wasn't hot (unless it was drenched by thunderstorms). SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 02 Jun 06 - 03:42 PM It's on again this weekend. I'm heading out the door for a long, sure to be HOT but great weekend. Come on out, if you're within range. It's well worth the effort. Great music, great line up, great venue. There is lots of on-stage, "cross pollination" that alway makes this a great event to play. Please say hello if you make it. I'd love to see a Mudcatter or few! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 06 Jun 04 - 12:02 PM What a time on Saturday! Great weather (hot, but under 100 degrees F - that's better'n last year). Good crowd (over 30,000). Damn good music on all stages, all day. Last night ended with the "Fiddle Faddle" - Alisdair Fraser, Brian McNeill, John Taylor and a number of fine local and youthful fiddlers all on-stage for a roaring session. Ed Miller, Jeff Moore (Carey Street) and I provided guitar support while Emily Dugas (Clandestine) drove the session with her bodhran. EJ Jones (also Clandestine) joined us last in the session with his Highland Pipes. It was a session to be remembered, something you almost had to be a part of to understand - 500+ folks in the audience, all on their feet, all dancing, for 90 minutes plus .... what a pure joy! .... more of the festival today, so if you're reading this on June 6, 2004 - please come on out to Arlington. If you're reading this atfer June 6, 2004 - keep the first weekend of June in mind for next year's Texas Scottish Festival. |

Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival--Arlington (UTA) From: JedMarum Date: 04 Jun 04 - 01:57 PM There'll some great music and games there this weekend - and I am really looking forward to it. I hope to see a few Mudcatters there. I'll list my shows, just in case you can come by and say hello - but there will be so much good music, you can't go wrong! * Fri Jun 4 - I'll be joining the Alex Beaton and Alisdair Fraser in the Glengarry Tent tonight beginning about 8:15 PM. * Sat Jun 5 - I am playing three sets; noon, 3:30 and 6:30 in the Glenuig Tent. * Sun Jun 6 - I am playing two sets; 1PM and 4PM also on the Glenuig Tent stage. Remember; it's hot hot hot in Texas right now - but all the shows are under (open-sided) tent cover - so there's shade. There's plenty of Guinness, cold beer and great food (not just Haggis). Also remember there will be quite a crowd. This fest normally draws in excess of 60,000 - but the campus is large and well laid out. See ya! |
