I remember as a kid seeing the Walt Disney movie Johnny Tremaine. There were 2 songs that I remember from the film, but forgot the lyrics. The first is the title song " Johnny Tremaine". The second was about the Sons of Liberty, entitled "The Liberty Tree". I am looking for the lyrics to both songs. I remember the tunes but not the words. SOL ZELLER

Johnny Tremaine, of Old Boston Town
Remember his name, he fought against the Crown
Fought and won cause his heart was free, fought and won for Liberty
Johnny Tremaine, Johnny Tremaine

(was there any more than that?)

March along with the fifer, boys
We were born forever free
Let's go ... the fifer, boys,
Under the Liberty Tree
It's a tall old tree, and a strong old tree
And we are the Sons, yes we are the Sons, the Sons of Liberty

(again, that's all I remember of the lyrics)

There must have been more verses than these. At one time I had a 10" Disney 78 with these songs. I remember the melodies quite well and could play either of them right now, but the rest of the lyrics have GWTW.

I remember singing "The Liberty Tree" song repeatedly -- but I was about 8 years old then, and that was a long time ago. Can't even remember the tune now.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LIBERTY TREE (from 'Johnny Tremain')
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 08 Jun 04 - 10:59 PM

Lyrics copied from Rachel Mills' Blog, with authorship credits from The Atlantic County [New Jersey] Library System, which has the sheet music.

THE LIBERTY TREE
(Tom Blackburn & George Bruns, 1956)
(From the Disney film "Johnny Tremain")

Plant the seed in our homeland, boys.
Let it grow where all can see.
Feed it with our devotion, boys.
Call it the Liberty Tree.

CHORUS: It's a tall old tree and a strong old tree,
And we are the Sons, yes, we are the Sons, the Sons of Liberty.

Save it from the storm, boys.
Water down its roots with tea;
And the sun will always shine
On the old Liberty Tree. CHORUS

March along with the fifer, boys.
We were born forever free.
We will pay the piper, boys,
Beneath the Liberty Tree. CHORUS

Pay the price they're asking, boys,
Always pay the tyrant's fee.
Never give up the struggle, boys,
Fight for the Liberty Tree. CHORUS

Stand for the rights of man, boys.
Stand against all tyranny.
Hang the of light of freedom, boys,
High on the Liberty Tree. CHORUS

It will grow as we grow, boys.
It will be as strong as we.
We must cling to our faith, boys,
Faith in the Liberty Tree. CHORUS

I believe the other lyric were

Did like red coats worth a hoot
didn't like red in any suit
boston town was loaded with tea
he up and dumped it in the sea

and then the chorus

I sang this song in elementary school back in the early 70s

I remember a verse as:

We were bred to fight England, boys,
Bred to fight all tyranny
So hang the bright lanterns, boys,
High on the Liberty Tree.

It's a tall old tree and a strong old tree,
And we are the Sons, yes we are the Sons, the Sons of Liberty!

A clip from the original Disney movie that contains this song in its entirety has now been posted on You Tube. The audio quality is quite good. Just put "Johnny Tremaine" into the You Tube search engine.

I loved this movie and I esspecialy loved the song, "Liberty Tree". I always thought one of the verses was,

"Raise your guns and fire boys,
we've lived forever free. So fight with all heart boys, Under the Liberty Tree.

chorus: It's a tall old tree and a strong old tree, And we are the sons yes we are the sons, the sons of liberty.

I remember the line in "Johnny Tremaine" as being, "He fought in homespun brown," rather than, "He fought against the Crown." Otherwise, my memory jibes with that of 12-stringer.

re: lyric posted by pj

The words went:

Didn't like redcoats worth a hoot
didn't like red in any suit.
He went down to Lexington town
and tipped the whole world upside down.

I have an original 45rpm record of this song somewhere. Got in a box of 45s at an auction about 40 years ago.

Tremain is not spelled with an "e" at the end

I still have occasional nightmares about the scene where he slips and puts his hand in the melted silver - yuk.

I really liked Johnny Tremain, one of my favorite movies as a kid. I tried searching for something about Hal Stalmaster. This is what my detective work has pieced together (and it admittedly aint much, maybe somebody can build on it.) I think this is sort of an "anti-biography" and my apologies to Mr. Stalmaster if he gets wind of it.

Hal Stalmaster, born March 1940 came out of nowhere, or that is to say his family was somehow previously connected with the LA showbusiness crowd and it probably helped to get him to the attention of Disney Inc. His mother, I believe was either a talent agent or casting director for the movie "The Cowboys" (John Wayne/Bruce Dern).
He starred as the appealing protagonist in Disney's Johnny Tremain, and the other Disney serial "Swamp Fox." He had a brief guest spot on "My Three Sons." He seemed to have dissapeared quickly from the camera side of show business after that(probably thankfully as many child actors of that era had yang careers of enormous popularity followed by the "ying" of unemployment and sometimes ridicule by their peers when they tried to reenter mainstream (non hollywood) culture, having lost their showbusiness identities and being reduced to mere "mortal" status again. (Remember Disney's Bobby Driscoll for example).

In the early 80s Hal Stalmaster's name was associated with a joint venture, some sort of showbusiness representation in LA. Id like to see somebody correct and update this admittedly rough draft. Again my apologies for any gross errors.....

Based on the 1944 "Newberry Award Winner for Children's Books." Walt D....like Mr. B .... had an "intuitive sense" for big street winners (Mary Poppins) based upon Walt's observation of his own children...(who could and did READ.)

Baby Berks continue to do fine
