Such good news. So happy for you, Mick. It's great you found that doctor.
I went to see a new doctor the other day and he greeted me in the waiting room with a little skippity dance routine. Not a common sight in rural Australia. Makes all the difference. Cheers Joy

I had the echocardiogram yesterday, and it went very well. I now have no restrictions. Heart function is back to normal. I remain on a pretty significant drug regimen, but that is more precautionary than anything. The Doc sez that if I do what I am supposed to, within a year I could be off these things altogether. The blood pressure is still somewhat elevated and I am working on that. I am walking about 3 to 5 miles a day, and I figure by January that will have done the trick on the BP. We will see.

Music is in full swing once more. I love this cardiologist. He clearly loves music, as he spends the first 10 minutes asking me a million questions about it. When I described playing the Uilleann Pipes, his response was, "No fucking way!". Got to love a Doctor like that ......... hahahahahahaha.

A million thanks to all who PM, email, and phone. I feel your caring thoughts and prayers.

All the best,

Mick

Quick note here Dude........The coreg is great stuff but can make you a bit drowsy.....moreso than most other heart meds. It's mainly a BP med combined with the added benefits of a blocker and does indeed protect the heart. Good stuff

The other thing you might ask about.......Although I know you don't seem to have a cholesterol problem, several of the cholesterol meds like Pravachol have an even better additional benefit in that they have been found to significantly reduce second heart attacks. There is some disagreement on this but several top guys agree it does. I take Pravachol and had never had a problem with cholesterol but what with the aorta problem and all, it seemed a good idea to an entire group of cardiac docs here.

Just a thought.........

dang, Mick,

I know life goes on without me, but I would never have missed out on this "mudcat get well card" on purpose. I found out that you can filter the entire BS section of Mudcat, so my settings have been set that way for several months now. So I never noticed this thread until I wanted to post my latest bit of nonsense.

Best wishes!

Just a quick update for you good folks. I have received a number of PM's, so I thought I would post it here.

I was mistaken as to the purpose of the appointment on the Wednesday just past. It was simply a checkup, plus a modification on the meds. I cornered the Doc and asked for a little more specificity as to what I can and cannot do. I still can't lift heavy weights (and he warned me before I could say a word about the old "going to the bathroom" joke, gotta love a Rugby playing Cardiologist...LOL)but other than that, I am free to do whatever I feel I can. The weight restriction is a precautionary move, in the event that there was a spontaneous laceration of the dynamically blocked blood vessel. They want to make sure it is healed.

He indicated that I can resume my musical career, which was the best news. But he did say that should I have another heart attack I am NOT to finish my set. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Fat chance.

The drug they had to modify is called Coreg and it is some kind of wonder drug that actually strengthens the heart. They incrementally increase the dosage until one is up to 25 mg twice a day. I am halfway there already.

Overall the prognosis is very good, and I am playing a gig tomorrow night. I will be having that echocardiogram next month. I will let you all know how it goes.

Most importantly I want to tell you all how much I appreciate the concern that this community has shown me. I had seen it many times before, but not experienced it in such a profound way as I did this time. Pretty humbling.

All the best,

Mick

Oh dear!! Hold everything!! Littlus Mickus? No, no, no!!! That won't do at all!! He's much too big in our minds, if not his own, to change his name. We'll just have to change our standards ("Yes, dear, this really is six inches....") so he can lay claim to large numbers, if in slightly shrunken units.... As for losing weight, just make sure not to lose any of the important stuff...

Does this mean he can no longer lay about at large? Allan is here and we called Mick last night. He sounds a little weary but very glad to be around (given the alternative - Kendall's line). The doctor wants him to lose MORE weight. Before it's over he will have to change his name to Little Mickaeline.

Mick,

Everything I want to say gets kind of stuck, have erased this twice already. Just want you to be well, and to for heaven's sake no matter how dreary it is some days, do what they tell you to take care of yourself. ... Even if it means you might miss the Getaway for some reason, which is about as unselfish a wish as I can send! But be well, and if loving prayers and good wishes and healing thoughts sent in your direction mean anything, you should be in pretty good shape by this time.

Love,
Rita F

Hey Mick, the wife and I are very happy to hear you are improving and gaining attitude again. Here is a short story for you to consider:

A lovely, elderly lady had suffered some minor memory problems after her heart attack. One morning she looked out her back window to see an elephant standing amongst the vegetables in her garden.

She had no idea what kind of animal it was, so she called 911 and told the dispatcher that a large gray animal was plucking her cabbages with its tail.

The dispatcher asked what the animal was doing with the cabbages. With wonder in her voice, the dear sweet lady said, "Oh you are just not going to believe it when I tell you!"

Get well soon, my friend, I look forward to seeing you at the Getaway.

Mike

Hugs and healthy thoughts Big Mick! Glad to hear you're on the mend!

Seems this is a bad month for tickers...my father was released from the hospital this morning after going in Wednesday with a mild heart attack. Luckily, it takes much more than a little blockage to fell a big heart like yours or my dad's.

Hope you'll be able to make the Getaway...I know that crisp, fresh Ramblewood air does wonders for the health!

Damn Mick... Will ya get well already so we can put this thread to rest? It is getting like the happy birthday Spaw thread!!!!! Look, mate, take two pints and call me in the morning... no, better make that prune juice and I will join you with a diet coke, doesn't old age suck? Well, it beats the hell out of the alternative... well, who knows a folk record company exec told me if you haven't made it by 48, you're over the hill, (49 next month) but, I guess it is better over the hill then under it!? (Cheering ya up yet????) Look, Uilleann piping is suposed to be good cardiac exersize, so ya must be doing something wrong, admit it... you are only playing jigs and avoiding the tough reels, (same as me... keep the ticker ward warm, who knows, I may be next if I don't start playing more challenging music...) which I am, the hand is working again, about 80% I'd say, so enough to crank out the tunes... and frighten the horses and cause the kids to cry and vergins to swoon... and ... where the hell was I... Oh right, get the F*** better mate, there are two few pipers and too many bodhran players, shove over and make room for four or five bodhran players ... HEY... why DON'T bodhran players wind up in hospitial more??? I guess it is true, the man who is fit for hanging will nver drown... I was talking about something wasn't I??? Oh right, yer heart... stop eating chicken skin and try a year of plane lettus (damn that is as tough a word to spell as it is two swallow the wreatched pig feed!) right, eat the salad, ol' pal and even if your heart does not improve, well, hell, you'll be so board and boring you wont care if you get another heart attack and the ones who loved you will have trouble remembering why... but really, eating health food does pick up your spirits... of course spirits pick up your spirits as well, and so does... what was I talking about again, and who the hell am I writing to? Oh yeah, Big Mick... like I was telling you, he had a small heart attack and is avoiding work... no, that wasn't it... I was talking TO Big Mick... tha's right... Micko... get well, behave and .... where am I... Oh right... I'm off to Mojo guitars to waste another precious day.,
Cheers mate...
a voice from over the hill (and far away)

PS What was this thread about again?????????????????? And where the hell is the Popular Halfwit these days????????????????

I am FINALLY done with work for the summer...I think. I also have the Mother of All Summer Colds. I think I must have sent you all my resistance-to-viruses healing energy instead of the hematic-pump-not-seizing-up energy by mistake. Anyway, I get to be a layabout until October or so, so I'm available for phone calls and the odd layabout consulting non-job.

I am so grateful for all the good wishes here, by telephone, and by mail. It is a humbling experience to go through an event like this. But it is significantly eased by the love and good thoughts I have received from all of you.

I am feeling fine, and walking every day. While I am not supposed to do any lifting, I did manage to power wash the sidewalk down to the lake last night. I was very careful and paying very close attention to the signals the old body was giving me. I will see the Doctor in a week for an echocardiogram, and will know more then.

To all of you that have sent personal notes, cards, etc, please be patient for a response. I will get to each and every one of you as I can. Between naps, that is ..... LOL. I don't do this "sick" thing very well. I am used to just getting up and going at it each and every day. But those that are keeping an eye on me are making sure that I do precisely what I am supposed to .... while I am in their sight, that is. hahahahha. Seriously, I am doing just as the Doctor ordered and will continue to.

But .... reading GWB's comments about Bill Clinton yesterday almost sent me back into Super Ventricular Tachycardia. LOL.

All the best,

Mick
