Subject: A bear song
From: Ralph
Date: 16 Oct 98 - 12:20 PM

Hi I'm looking for the words and music to this song. I don't remember the exact name, just the choris.

"He's big around the middle and broad accross the rump, He's doing 40 miles per hour, doing 40 feet a jump.

He ain't never been caught He ain't never been treed, and some folks say, he looks a lot like me.

That is about all that I remeber of the tune. Can anybody help?

Thanks

The song is known as Slewfoot, or Old Slewfoot, or Bear Tracks. I can't seem to find it in DT, and it has been many many years since I performed it. Let's see--

High on the mountain, tell me what you see/ Bear tracks, Bear tracks, lookin' back at me./ Run get your rifle, before it's too late/ That bear's got a little pig and he's headin' for the gate./

CHORUS He's big around the middle and he's broad across the rump/ Runnin ninety miles an hour, makin' thirty foot a jump;/ He ain't never been caught, ain't never been treed/ Some folks say he's a lot like me.

Winter's comin' on and it's forty below/ The river's froze over--where can he go?/ Run him in the valley, run him past the well,/ Shoot him in the bottom just to listen to him yell./

CHORUS

Gene beat me by one minute! But I had forgotten a verse, anyway. I wonder if I can still play the break for that song? I'll go try--

To Bill in Alabama...
Here's a parody of Ole Slew Foot...

BIGFOOT
Recorded by: Buzz Martin
Writer: Buzz Martin
To the Tune of: Ole Slew Foot

Way up on the mountainside, look what I found
Great big man tracks, sinkin' in the ground
It's the legendary Sasquatch they're all harpin' on
But Ole Bigfoot, he's been there an gone.

CHORUS
He's big around the middle and he's broad across the rump
Goin' ninety miles an hour takin' forty foot a jump
Ain't ever been caught, or ever run up a tree
Some folks say he sings a lot like me.

He's been seen by almost ever'body, almost ever'where
He's mostly been seen when he wasn't even there
They say he's a monster with a mind of a child
I think he's just a logger that plumb went wild.

CHORUS

They've chased Ole Bigfoot as far as he can go
When they'll catch and civilize him, well, nobody knows
He shouldn't have to suffer over modern man's whim
You wouldn't want your sister to go to school with him. Well,

CHORUS

TAG: Some folks say he looks a lot like me.
