This is a real long shot, but a guy called Colin Wharton wrote a PhD thesis called 'Folk Songs from the North Riding' at the University of Leeds in 1962. Sadly Leeds have lost their copy, and I can't trace it anywhere else. I figured somebody somewhere might know the guy

I think it is traditional to provide finished copies to one's thesis advisors. You might check with the U of L and see if you can find out who they were, in the event your search for Mr Wharton doesn't pan out.

I tried Friends Reunited for you, but they're not listing anyone of that name. Sorry...

Hi Red Max.
If you're still out there and still looking after 7 years, I too am interested in this topic and am hot on the trail. If you want to PM me we can perhaps pool our resources.

Hi Steve when I noticed the name Colin Wharton it was a name I seemed to remember from the past. It was for that reason I took a look at this thread. As I am unable to put a face to the name I think that your best bet could be Brian Senior or Kevin Young. Still racking my brain as I Typo this could it be a name associated with the Topic or is it someone who has written something for Tykes News. Colin Wharton name certainly has stuck in my head so he must have been someone who cropped up quite often. I'm going to post this and see if his name apears on the friends of the Topic FC list on Facebook.

Hi Tyke
We have established that by the early 70s he was a deputy head down south. He would be about 70 now. Being based at Leeds as a PhD student in the 60s he may well have gone to the Topic. I have contact details of a probable candidate so we might have nailed this one. I need to check with LU to see if they want to get hold of a copy. There are some delicate politics involved here.

Tyke - Topic committee included Ronnie Wharton. That may be the name you recall.
Quack!
Geoff.

If I remember the story correctly, there is a Huddleston connection. Didn't he collect with Mary before she recruited Nigel?

Just seen this so don't know how relevant this search is. The Colin Wharton you're looking for is my dad. Can I help you?
Carolyn

Ruairidh,
You're thinking of someone else, but there is a Huddleston connection.

Carolyn,
Welcome. I'd be interested to hear your dad's take on the matter. It would be useful to our researches to have access to your dad's researches of the 60s as we are working on a second edition of the Huddleston Collection and your dad recorded some of the same people the Huddlestons recorded.

Hi Steve
He's away til the end of next week so when he's back I'll tell him about this. He'll be astonished! But I'm sure he'd be happy to help you if he can. How best can he communicate with you? He does use email (even though he's 72!) or phone? Let me know and I'll pass on the info.

Carolyn - Colin Wharton's daughter - I am trying to get in touch with your dad too! Leeds University is digitising parts of its Folklore archive (Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture) and it would be amazing if I could get in touch with him to talk about some of his work in the archive. If there is any way you could put us in touch, or if I could chat with you about him? Leila

Hey, Leila,
That's great news. Could you please keep us posted with progress? Perhaps start a new thread just for this important work. Would you be interested in linking up with the Yorkshire Garland website? It would also be useful for all concerned to put something about what you are doing on the Tradsong forum as lots of people there would be interested.
There would also be some mileage in linking up with Sheffield University's Special Collections which houses the Huddleston Archive which has connections to the Wharton Collection.

Hi Steve,
For further information about the Leeds University Dialect and Heritage Project please see: https://dialectandheritage.org.uk/
As part of the project some of the archive is being digitised, though there are copyright issues with some of the student projects - hence my trying to contact Colin Wharton to seek permission to use / reproduce some of his research. Do you know how I could contact him or his family? Is the Wharton Collection available for consultation?
Many thanks, Leila

Surely you have everything at the Brotherton? I have copies somewhere but they're only what came from the Brotherton. Or maybe not. I have a vague recollection that some of it went missing, but it was all a long time ago.

Last I heard Colin was down in London, somewhere near Highgate and retired from teaching. I'll check my records and let you know what I have. The problem at Leeds was compounded during cutbacks at the library. When Oliver left and my sister-in-law retired there was no-one left looking after the Folklife Studies Archive, so only a few people were aware of its existence. This was at least 10 years ago.

While I'm on there is a core of young people in Yorkshire who are interested in researching folksong collections who perhaps should be at least made aware of your project.

Leila
I need to PM you with private info including the last email address I have for Colin. In order to do that you will need to join Mudcat unless you can let me have your email address. In 2019 Rod Stradling of Musical Traditions contacted him for permission to use his recordings and he had moved to Eastbourne by then. He would be 83 by now if he is still with us.

I have copies of all the listings of all the folk material in the LAVC. I might even have a copy of the missing dissertation somewhere.

Leila, are you aware of the double CD put out by Mustrad with Colin's recordings on it? Look for Songs of the North Riding MTCD406-7 on the Musical Traditions website.

Mossy Christian who provided info from Colin's dissertation to Mustrad is one of these young people interested in the archive side.
