Trip to Macclesfield

I'll be spending just over 2 weeks in the Macclesfield area from July 4th - 21st. Can anyone suggest and sessions in the area? I can bring whistle, concertina and voice with me from Montreal.

Isn't there a session in Gawsworth, which is only a couple of miles from Macc., on the Congleton road? I seem to remember there is, but cannot recall which day of the week (or, indeed, whether it happens every week).

I think the Gawsworth event is in the Harrington Arms on Friday evenings.

I heard this from a work colleague but haven't been myself, so can't vouch for this personally.

I believe it is largely Irish Traditional session music with the occasional song thrown in.

H Turpy, if you fancy coming to Manchester (short train trip) for a Session you'd be welcome at our couple.
Monday night
Friday night

If you go to "Comments" you can get a map of the locations.
The session is relaxed, friendly, and eclectic. The nucleus consists of Northumberland Smallpipes (in the civilised Key of G) Fiddle, Whistle and Guitar.
The beers good too.

I visited "Folk at the Prospect" in Runcorn, "Ring o' Bells Folk Club" in Widnes, "Railway Folk Club" in Lymm and "The Bulls Head" in Mobberly. There is loads of stuff going on in Chesire and the surrounding counties and if you have a car then you are bound to find something every night. Once you have found a venue, use yell (looking for pubs) and you will be able to find most of the postcodes you need. Stick the postcode into multimap and then you will be able to get a map of the areas. You could even use the AA web site to get directions from where you are staying.

Biddulp "Folk in the Park" is on Sat July 10, afternoon and evening. Can't do blue clickies, but I'm sure a computer search will produce more details. Biddulph is a nice little place a few miles south of Macc, and the festival is in a niced bit of park in what was the gardens of a stately home(now a nursing home I think).Well worth a stroll round the woods as well. I will be there with the band. I'll send you a PM with some more info.

The Cotton Tree in Bollington is a very good music pub, with a very discerning artistic policy. I know this because I have had two bookings there myself.

Well - I'm back in Canada and had a great time in the UK. Didn't make it to the Dog and Partridge in Bollington unfortunately. Did make it to the Dancing Jig and Jolly Angler in Manchester though and a big thanks for making me feel so welcome. Great players there too.

Spent last weekend with three rapper teams, Stone Monkey (my brothers team), Triskele and a team visiting from Canada, Toronto Sword. Fantastic singing in Ron and Jenny's kitchen Saturday night. My hernia, from Tom's rendition of "Sammy's Bar" sung three octaves lower than anyone could manage, is recovering nicely!

Topped off the spectacular trip with a visit to Barleycorn Concertinas - The biggest concertina showroom in the UK - in the shed in Chris Algars garden, no space for more than two people at a time! - which was an experience. Came away with a wonderful Wheatstone English. Perfect for those new tunes I learned while I was there!

I think Macclesfield should have a tourist board and be running trips there. I wouldn't mind a couple of weeks like that, sounds more fun than Nottingham.....
