Probably... I have the track on a Smithsonian Folkways "best of" compilation CD that includes a lot of different artists. I think Locker is on the track also.

Greg's original chords transposed down from Bb to G worked well for me. With the addition of a Gdim chord as a lead-in, it's well near perfect to my ear. But how easy a chord is to play will differ from player to player and instrument to instrument. I'm on a 5 string banjo in G tuning. Guitar players may prefer the other version.

This thread has taken on quite a life of its own. The "Dear one...the world... is waiting for the SUN...Rise..." lyric is what I remember from that ancient 78 rpm record I have stashed away at my Mom's house. I haven't heard that thing in over 20 years, so my memory could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I have an instrumental bluegrss version on CD by Roger Sprung & Doc Watson. Way too fast for my playing ability.

Hey Folks please ignore that last entry of mine. My memory is s--t,
picked up my guitar when I reached home and found that my left hand has a better memory than I do, it ain't a B7 but one of those augminished/demented type ones. I'll leave it to the musicians in future.

When I back up a friend who by the way is a keen Les Paul man we go to a B7 after G ????

Seems to sound right to me.

I think the first line(from memory) is
"The whole wide world is waiting for the sunrise"
The version quoted earlier missed out the "whole" which is necessary to fit the tune.

Yes, Steve Parkes, I should have remembered the version by Les Paul and Mary Ford. It took me less than five minutes to find it on the shelf upstairs, once I saw your reminder. I see Benny Goodman also recorded that song on a V-Disc.

My mother took me to see Les and Mary perform live at the Chicago Theatre in the '50's. They stood on the side of the stage because he was hooked up to this giant rig that probably could now fit in your shirt pocket - somehow they recreated the sound of the records -- what a talent!!

I don't know... does it sound good? Then try it.   I've been using F#7. The Gdim sounds good as a lead-in to the G chords at the start of each section ( e.g. "Dear one...." and "And while.....") They are pretty similar on the banjo, except for the bass string. It's F# for the F#7 and of course G for the Gdim. Thanks again to Greg Stephens for the original chords.

The song is pretty old as mentioned (thanks for the date and author, Steve). I have somewhere an acoustic 78 of a man singing it in a semi-classical style (nothing like Mary Ford), which had to be from the very early 20s. (Don't remember the name.) Greg was playing it in a trad jazz setting, and I'm playing it on a 5 string banjo in the stroke style. Maybe a Tejano version next?

I dunno.. does it sound OK? Anyway, on the plectrum or 5 string banjo in G tuning, there is only a slight difference between those two chords. F#7 is a little bit easier. But I found that G dim sounds good to lead into the G chord at the start of each part of the tune. as in the lines "Dear one.... " and "The thrush..... ". 1919 is all PD now. Anything pre-1923 isn't covered by "Sonny Bono" act. One more reason to play old songs. Of course Les Paul's arrangement is still covered, but my banjo playing on a five string in a stroke style is nothing like his playing, so I'm technically free of copyright entanglements. ( As if anyone has ever asked me for a dime of royalties! I'd offer them 50% of my net if they'll cover losses!)

That's why I like these 'Cord Req' threads - G / Gdim is easier on the Piano Accordion than G / F#7 - that requires a jump from one end of the Stradella to the other - the first is a button in the same short row.

I take it then that we could do a similar transpose to the C#dim?
