Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Peace Date: 13 Jun 04 - 04:55 PM Ranks just posted this on another thread. England was leading up to the 90th Minute. Beckham missed a penalty in the second half. Zidane scored a free-Kick in the 91st minute. In the 93rd Minute he scored a penalty after a terrible mistake of the English defense. Ranks did NOT sound too impressed. (I had asked who won.) |

Beckham is just about the only bloody statesman we've got left in English football, and he carried the defeat with dignity, congratulating Zidane in a most magnanamous way. All power to the bloke. Stop yer carping, Les! |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST Date: 14 Jun 04 - 07:21 AM Anyone who blames Becham for this loss was looking at a different match than I was. The donkeys were calamnity James the goal keeper and Gerard who made a stupid back pass. I'm not a Becham fan but he was the best English forward on the pitch. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Sweetfia Date: 14 Jun 04 - 08:37 AM I can't remember what goal is was but what i do remember is that James went one way as the ball went the complete opposite way!! Idiot! |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST,Den Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:03 AM Well from what I saw Beckham didn't seem to get much purchase on the spot kick and to be honest Bartez did very well. He was across very quickly to make the stop. If its donkeys your looking for. Look no further than Heskey it was his needless foul that gave away the free-kick. James' positioning on the kick was poor. He rooted himself dead centre on the goal line. The wall is there to cover part of the goal. The way they had set up would allow James to move a little to his right and guard that side of the net. And finally Steven Gerrard had enough time to hit the ball anywhere other than where he put it. What about the 30th row of the stadium. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST,Jon Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:10 AM I think it unfair to blame Beckham for the loss but it is fair, as suggested in another thread, to suggest he was unwise to take the kick. Here is another angle - from the BBC. As for the comments about the goalkeeper, as a Norwich supporter, I can assure you the real problem in that area was overlooking Robert Green... Mind you, in fariness to James and with regards to the penalty istelf, I thought it was really well struck. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:12 AM This is what happens when a team defends too deep and fails to clear the ball, other than giving back to the opposition. We could have put more pressure on the French midfield players, other than having a clumsy striker leg one up. You're right about James' positioning, Den, but even then it was a brilliantly taken free kick. Bartez has seen enough Beckham spot kicks to know his technique, but you can't really blame James for not saving the penalty, Sophe. Keepers will often decide which side to dive to before the kicker takes it. It's a 50:50 thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: breezy Date: 14 Jun 04 - 11:41 AM its agame of two parts, the 2nd being longer than the first due to the addition of Added Time, England dont know about that. No one has told the boys to keep on playing till the end. It was in the minds of the players that they had won long before the final whistle was blown. The failure to drive this point home rests with our motivators especially that swede of a manager who is a creep and too many think the sun shines out of his fundamental. Lack of finishing the race to csoss the line in first place, cost England the game, loss of concentration, loss of determination, loss of pride, loss of direction and the lack of a man to kick arse on the field of play to lead the team to the end . Dont tell me they were good when they lost. England messed up, big time. If you want rewards you have to work for them. Michaela Breeze's reward has been achieved by exactly that, she puts these prima donnas of footballers to shame as can many real athletes. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST, clear light of morning Date: 14 Jun 04 - 01:55 PM England were much the better side. The scoreline was a travesty. Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: alanabit Date: 14 Jun 04 - 03:31 PM France were the better side and it would have been a travesty had they left the stadium with anything less than the three points which they deserved. They passed the ball to each other and played composed, confident football even when they were behind. They had passion, discipline and skill. I'll still give England a chance if the two sides meet again though. They weren't all bad. There were some good things in their performance and they can do better. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Jun 04 - 05:27 PM A missed penalty is when the ball goes wide or over the top, and it is always an embarassing mistake. A saved penalty is when the keeper guesses right, jumps the correct way or stays in the middle, and stops the ball going into the goal, and statistically that is bound to happen every now and again. Not at all the same thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: alanabit Date: 15 Jun 04 - 02:13 AM Kevin, I have to disagree. A well hit penalty takes a twentieth of a second to reach its target. The goalkeeper doesn't have a chance if it is hit properly. I think it would be fairer to say that it is unreasonable to expect the penalty taker to get it right every time. To be fair to Becks, he has more than once taken penalties at nerve wracking moments and done the job perfectly. One memorable occasion was against Argentina in the World Cup two years ago. For those who are moaning about his recent miss, it is worth noting how quickly they have forgotten his excellent free kick, which resulted in England taking the lead against France. |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: AKS Date: 15 Jun 04 - 03:57 AM But isn't it still in the book that the goalie may NOT move before the ball moves? Barthez was well on his way when Beckham was only jogging to the ball's (general) direction! re: "...quickly they have forgotten his excellent free kick..."; say no more, Alanabit, beautiful stuff it was! AKS ps did you see the Swedes kick the Bulgarians - boy can they run! Or then maybe the B's are slower than average... |
Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: Rasener Date: 15 Jun 04 - 04:15 AM I believe the rules are such nowadays, that the goalkeeper can move along the goal line but not come forward. Is that correct referees? |

Subject: RE: BS: B eckham Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr From: GUEST Date: 15 Jun 04 - 09:14 AM You are right The Villan. The goalkeeper can move at will from side to side along the goal line aslong as he/she does not move forward away from the goal line. Barthez is a master at distracting the penalty taker just ask Steed Malbranque. |
