I think (the late) Stan Gee sang the Wizard of Alderley Edge when he was a member of Bullock Smithy. Stan sadly died of a heart attack about 20 years ago whilst bopping at a local ceilidh.

Stan Gee was certainly quite a character, deeply involved in folk song, dance, and music. He was an active member of the Derbyshire Caving Club and he was also involved in the local cave rescue team.

Stan Gee of Redcar is playing at The Second Time Around folk club. White Lion, Beeston, Nottingham on Friday 2nd July in the company of Evelyn May. I havn't seen him since around 1973 so it will be nice to welcome him back.

Just for the record there definitely was a Stan Gee who came from Stockport and played in a folk group called Bullock Smithy back in the late 70s/early 80s. He was a great friend of my father and I knew him very well when I was a child - a real character indeed!

The Stan Gee you want is definitely the, now deceased, one from Stockport. He was an old mate of mine and his musical compatriot, Arthur Ball, went to school with my father. I'm not aware that Stan ever wrote a song in his life.

Stan had an interest in Alderley Edge because of his connections with caving - he used to take tours around the old mines on the edge - Wood Mine and West Mine - I Know; I've been with him!

Can't be sure but a few of the Alderley and Wizard songs might have been written by "Joe" Beard - of Granny Takes A Trip fame (or is it infamy?) he used to live in Higher Poynton and if anyone can dig him out of the woodwork, I'd be interested to know.

Stan Gee of Stockport was, as described above, a singer, melodeon player, Morris musician, Caver and some would say part-time Satanist but that may have simply been a rumour he encouraged. He died at the Ceilidh following the Saturday night of Gorton Rushcart around 1983 (?).

I have a book of hiking songs put together by him. If I can find it I will check for Wizzardly songs.

That's our Stan! He would travel to Northern Italy with Arthur Ball most summers for walking, caving, and folk type stuff.

His involvement with (white) witchcraft was quite interesting - he once tried to stop the rain outside the Rising Sun in Hazel Grove (the modern name for the area formerly known as Bullock Smithy) so the 'Old Ball' Easter Play could be performed outside. It didn't work - it just rained all the more heavily. Stan took a lot of stick for that one - all in good humour!

I played with Stan for a long while: musicianing for Fidler's Fancy, for a short time as resident with Stan at Heaton Moor Rugby Club F.C. and loads of other stuff too.

He was and is a legend and is sorely missed. They don't make 'em like that any more!

I had the privilege of knowing Stan from the vibrant Stockport 'scene' of the mid to late 1960s.

The 'Satanist' canard is untrue - Stan, to my knowledge, was certainly a neo-Pagan. His Path was not that of Wicca - my Path - it tended to favour more the worship of the All Father.

I certainly miss him. As John J says, above, they don't make 'em like that any more. A real one-off.

I once ran into him in Lyme Park (those who need to know will know where that is) on a snowy day. Stan had skived off work form his job at Mirlees and was wearing the most antique pair of skis you could imagine. When I saw him a week or so later, his leg was in plaster and he'd had a terrible time explaining it to the boss.

Nobody know the current whereabouts of Joe Beard??

I found the details about Stan Gee informative. As an aside does anybody know the names of the other members of Bullock Smithy?
I first heard this group as part of a 'Folkweave' session entitled 'Hearken Unto The Witches Rune' which also involved a singer called Christine Wilkinson. Does anybody have info about her?

I remember the name but I don't think she was a regular member of Bullock Smithy.

Difficult to remember names from so long ago - apart from Arthur Ball who was at school with my father so he should be around 84 if he's still with us.

Arthur Ball - who also performed in Bullock Smithy was living in Mossley. One of his sons, Ian (who I think may have done the odd gig with Bullock Smithy, and certainly played in RamJam) can be contacted through his website

I think Eaby (sp?) played in Bullock Smithy, I saw him at a Poynton Ceilidh about 10-12 years ago. He had moved to Ireland.

The was another in that circle of friends, Trevor, who I think performed in Bullock Smithy. I'm certain he musicianed for Poynton Jemmers. Trevor sadly died about 30 years ago.

I was really surprised to come back and see all the new posts, as there had been a 4 year gap before I posted in Nov 2008, so I thought this thread would have well and truly died! It was great to read other comments from those who also remember Stan Gee and Bullock Smithy with fond affection.

He was a great friend of my late father (Pete Smith or 'Smig' as he was known) who was also one of the founder members of the Derbyshire Caving Club, after they split away from the Orpheus in 1959. I gather it wasn't the most amicable parting of ways at the time, but that's another story!...

The thing I remember most about Stan was the 'Loony Weekends' that he and a few others organised in Wetton, a small village on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border, during the late 70s/early 80s. They hired out the back room of the Royal Oak pub for the band to perform in and it was always a great night. As others have mentioned, along with Stan there was Trevor, Arthur Ball and young lass named Christine, who had a great voice, but I can't remember who provided percussion??

There was always a walk on the Saturday, which was usually around the Manifold Valley and often stopped off for a few beers at the Cavalier Pub in Grindon. I remember one occasion when Stan's poor old dog 'Boot' couldn't make it back up the hill and he had to carry him the rest of the way in the rucksack!

Whilst I appreciate this has got nothing to do with the original post (6 years ago!), it would be great to hear from anyone else who also has fond memories of the the Loony weekends. It was 30 years ago, but I can remember them like it was yesterday!

Fun reading these comments, the bits of information that have become slightly twisted and lost abit of reality and the other bits that are just, well,not true and really funny. Arthur ball was my dad and I'm sorry to say passed away on Thursday 29th Sept. 2011.
       I also remember the loony weekends, Trevor Cowdrey taught me to ride a motorbike, I went to school with his son, Moseley Hall. Stan Gee was best man at my dads wedding, so I new him all my life. As has been said many times before, a one off.Stan did write songs, along with alot of research into local customs and folklore.As well as the skiing in lime park. Along with others in the caving club he built sledges with car headlamps fitted to sledge at night down from the cage towards the main gate.With the caving club and Bullock smithy, there are an awful lot of very happy memories.

I am the former partner of Heeby (Geoff Bostock) who
played guitar and bass for Bullock Smithy or as they
were called previously the SlipperAlley Sidewalk Stompers?
I remember Stan, Arthur, Trevor, Jim Kelly - a master musician,
Jid and Christine and a guy who played the mandolin all with fond affection.
I have tape recordings of their rehearsals and concerts from late 1960's early 1970's which I would love to put on disc with photos to upload on Youtube just has been done for The Pennine Folk as a tribute to them. Hopefully the tapes will still be ok, as for some of the photos,taken in Alderley Edge, the last time I saw a copy of them was in Arthur's house.

Stumbled on this site by chance and have enjoyed reminiscing along with my past. I'm Trevor's eldest son and the Bullock Smithy days formed most of my child and early adulthood. The old man passed away on the 8th May 1981 and as memory serves Stan died later (Sept?) that same year. Joe Beard still lives in Elmbeds Road, Higher Poynton. I live in Australia now but I had a pint with Joe when I was over in August...he's still a top man. Dave Ball,it is I that you were at school with all those years ago. Very sorry to hear about your dad, he really did very well to live so long as I remember he'd had 4 heart attacks before dad & Stan died. Kindest regards to your family. I'd really like to see some Bullock Smithy stuff loaded onto you tube. Does anybody remember Sam who played fiddle with BS for some years. I met him in The Railway in Ashton some years ago...still going well.

I met Jeff (Heeby Jeeby) and Stan Gee when I worked at Mirlees Blackstone in Hazel Grove and on occasion I played the wash board with The Slipper Ally Sidewalk Stompers.
I also remember going caving with the DCC. At that time people generally called me Humperdink or Hump due to my physical likeness to Engelbert Humperdink who was popular in the late sixties.
My brief encounters with Slipper Ally and visits to Poynton folk club inspired me to learn to play the mandolin. I bought one just before I left England in 1971 and moved to Australia.
In 1973 I began to work as a full time folk musician touring in Australia where I still reside. During the 1980s I went to university as a mature aged student and later became a high school teacher.
However, I have maintained my interest in folk music I still perform at folk festivals.

Well done Jenny re Stan and Bullock Smithy site.The world needs Bullock Smithies now .A song I remember of Stan`s (but I don`t if you get my meaning!?) is "Brown Brown all the way down".Then there was "The hole in the elephants bottom" and one I still do, called "The Brothers Malone".....all rude and very funny.
I have a photo of the oval wheeled bike race at Alstonefield that I`m putting into my book- in the Stan Gee/ Bullock Smithy section.

Wow I remember Slipperalley very well.

They ran a folk club, ok it was just them, never any other singers, at the Busman's social club in Macclesfield on Sunday evenings in 1970/71.

Every week their repertoire included Paddy Lay Back.

Always intoxicated and with the resultant tremendous enthusiasm.

The van /truck they came in was amazing.There was a fair number of slogans/ philosophies painted on it. The side windows were whitewashed, so obviously no one could see inside. Engraved upon it were the words to the wise

" Dont laugh missis, your daughter's in the back"

Seeing ths thread resurrected got me thinking about Stan's unusual guitar playing action; a sort of "stoop", does anyone remember it? Imagine playing standing up with a strap which is about a foot too long and having to lean forward in order to reach the strings.

Only just found this site. Having spent much time at Poynton folk, Wetton, George Alstonfield etc as well as about 6 trips to Italy with Stan & Arthur, it was great to recall all the herberts-Jid, Trevor, Jim Heeby and Christine. Not forgetting Dave & Ian Ball. Realy happy days, a bit manic at times, like Stockport Carnival !

Stan Gee did sing a song about The Wizard of Alderley it was his own song and it started 'Who is he' The chorus 'He's the Wizard, the Wizard. the wizard of Alderley. It was a great song. He often sang it with the folk group Bullock Smithy. I have been searching for the lyrics but to no avail and Bullock Smithy as far as I know did. very little recording, From my memory it did not mention the edge and as soon as you put the edge in the title you get Pete Coe's song. Could it have been written by Chris “Joe” Beard? He was heavily into such songs but I hanven’t seen him since before the plague.

Don't know if it's the same song although both Joe and Stan did (probably still does in the case of Joe) have a thing about Alderley Edge.

Of course, back in 1968, Bullock Smithy did not yet exist - they were known as the Slipper Alley Sidewalk Stompers when our paths first crossed at the beginning of the 70s.
