Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 12 - 06:45 PM Well done Jenny re Stan and Bullock Smithy site. The world needs Bullock Smithies now .A song I remember of Stan`s (but I don`t if you get my meaning!?) is "Brown Brown all the way down".Then there was "The hole in the elephants bottom" and one I still do, called "The Brothers Malone".....all rude and very funny. I have a photo of the oval wheeled bike race at Alstonefield that I`m putting into my book- in the Stan Gee/ Bullock Smithy section. Joe B/Purples |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Tony Williams Date: 03 Mar 13 - 07:27 AM Wow I remember Slipperalley very well. They ran a folk club, ok it was just them, never any other singers, at the Busman's social club in Macclesfield on Sunday evenings in 1970/71. Every week their repertoire included Paddy Lay Back. Always intoxicated and with the resultant tremendous enthusiasm. The van /truck they came in was amazing. There was a fair number of slogans/ philosophies painted on it. The side windows were whitewashed, so obviously no one could see inside. Engraved upon it were the words to the wise " Dont laugh missis, your daughter's in the back" Loved the story about Stan and the skis Tony Williams |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Ray Date: 04 Mar 13 - 04:44 AM Seeing ths thread resurrected got me thinking about Stan's unusual guitar playing action; a sort of "stoop", does anyone remember it? Imagine playing standing up with a strap which is about a foot too long and having to lean forward in order to reach the strings. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Dunstable - Al Date: 13 Mar 18 - 05:23 PM Only just found this site. Having spent much time at Poynton folk, Wetton, George Alstonfield etc as well as about 6 trips to Italy with Stan & Arthur, it was great to recall all the herberts-Jid, Trevor, Jim Heeby and Christine. Not forgetting Dave & Ian Ball. Realy happy days, a bit manic at times, like Stockport Carnival ! My best wishes to all that are still with us and fond memories of those who are not. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST Date: 04 Jul 21 - 08:00 PM Hi I have very fond memories of the poynton folk club in the 1970 and still have some recordings i made. Bullocks Smithy were the best band at the time better than Steeleye and Mr Fox. Does anyone remember the concert they gave in Bramall Park. Bestbl gig I have ever been to |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Ray Date: 05 Jul 21 - 03:39 AM Concert in Bramhall park? They were just one of a number of acts. I remember it well but I was one of the people who organised it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Glynne Davies Date: 31 Jul 21 - 06:49 PM Stan Gee did sing a song about The Wizard of Alderley it was his own song and it started 'Who is he' The chorus 'He's the Wizard, the Wizard. the wizard of Alderley. It was a great song. He often sang it with the folk group Bullock Smithy. I have been searching for the lyrics but to no avail and Bullock Smithy as far as I know did. very little recording, From my memory it did not mention the edge and as soon as you put the edge in the title you get Pete Coe's song. There is a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Bullock-Smithy-Folk-Group-127653510679542 I worked with Stan at Mirrlees Blackstone in Hazel Grove(Old name Bulllock Smithy) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Ray Date: 07 Aug 21 - 10:33 AM Could it have been written by Chris “Joe” Beard? He was heavily into such songs but I hanven’t seen him since before the plague. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stan Gee songs From: GUEST,Ray Date: 08 Aug 21 - 08:48 AM This is the original "Wizard" song from Joe's then band (1968) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzNsyoC5JFk Don't know if it's the same song although both Joe and Stan did (probably still does in the case of Joe) have a thing about Alderley Edge. Of course, back in 1968, Bullock Smithy did not yet exist - they were known as the Slipper Alley Sidewalk Stompers when our paths first crossed at the beginning of the 70s. |
