Subject: New Folk Venue in Trenton NJ USA From: Susan of DT Date: 22 Jun 04 - 07:52 PM I have just become aware of a folk music coffeehouse called "Traditions" in the Old Barracks museum in Trenton on Barracks Street (Willow extension) just off West State Street near the State House. They have offered concerts every Wednesday nite at 7:30 at the Old Barracks since March. This is literally next door to a building of my college and I have just heard about it from a mailing of the Johnson Girls. (I have offered to help with their publicity.) I know there are not a lot of New Jersey/Pennsylvania people at mudcat, but I would like those people to be aware of it. The web site is www.barracks.org I will post the concerts on the "What's On" permathread. The next several concerts are: June 23 - Tom and Marianne Tucker Tom and Marianne offer a wide repertoire drawn from the folk music traditions of Ireland, America, Canada, Scotland and Great Britain. Adept at more than a dozen instruments, they add strong harmonies to create memorable performances. June 30 - STOUT STOUT is a vocal and instrumental folk group noted for rich harmonies backed by a variety of traditional accoustic instrments. This combination yields a sound that is distinctly American in nature. They're a hard group to get a hold of, so the Barracks is delighted to bring these very talented musicians to you! July 14 - McDermott's Handy Traditional Irish music is flourishing in South Jersey. A tribute to the late Irish fiddler Ed McDermott, McDermott's Handy is Kathy DeAngelo and Dennis Gormley. Formed in 1977, their strong vocals are backed by Celtic harp, fiddle, guitar, flute, whistle, bouzouki, banjo, mandolin, bodhran, bass and keyboards. Their debut album, Come Take the Byroads, includes such favorites as "The Boys of Ballinamore" and "Rising of the Moon." July 14 - The Johnson Girls Formed in 1997 following the Sea Music Festival at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, The Johnson Girls is a primarily a capella group performing traditional and contemporary folk music with an emphasis on Sea Chanteys and other Maritime Music. With diverse backgrounds, each member of Johnson Girls brings a specialty to the group, including traditional work songs, riverboat and minstrel songs, songs in the African American tradition, songs of fisherman and their wives and songs from the Irish tradition. July 21 - Marti Rogers Accompanying herself on the guitar, the Appalachian lap dulcimer, or the Autoharp, Marti Rogers sings a wide variety of songs in the folk genre from traditional to contemporary, including some of her own composition. No stranger to the New York folk scene, Marti brings to the stage many years of experience and study which she often draws upon to introduce her songs with interesting stories or historical background. In her strong, clear voice, she weaves a spell taking us back to simpler times when people sat on back porches, or around the hearth making their own music. |
