In the matter of morals there is little difference between left and right, but it does seem to me that all the hypocrites are on the right.

Oh, I'll agree with that allright, Ron, it's ironical! :-) It's a rare politician who doesn't swear a blue streak when he thinks there's no press or public around to witness it.

How dare the conservatives call anyone hypocrites - unless of course they are looking in a mirror.   To make ridiculous claims that we are "insulted" by Cheney's comment is missing the whole point. We are pointing out the irony that this pious idiot can say whatever he please and then support an administration that is doing everything it can to suppress freedom of speech.

Besides, if Leahy could physically do what the VP suggested, the rightwing nuts would probably declare it some sort of crime.

So does Dick kiss his children with that mouth? Then again, does he even speak to his daughter???

Great line from Sparky Rucker - "Dick Cheney - sounds like some sort of S&M position"

Fuck! That miserable shit-for-brains cocksucker Cheney said a bad word in public!???!!! Why, he oughta be im-fucking-peached for that!!!! He oughta get the chair! It's absolutely fucking unacceptable and shocking!!! Only child molesters and mass murderers use language like that in public!

Really... :-) Such hypocrisy. Look, I can't stand Cheney, I detest the man and everything he stands for, but this is NOT news. It just isn't. It doesn't matter. There are people dying needlessly every day because of Cheney's insane policies and those of his government...and people are worrying about him saying a bad word in Congress?????????????

Gimme a break. I am not so partisan as to think I need to use something trivial like this to find reason to criticize Dick Cheney.

Mick,

I find little difference in morals between the Left and the Right. On both sides I find people I can respect, and work with even if I do not agree with them. Most of them truly believe in what they say, and are consistant in their actions. They accept the responsibility of their positons and actions.

I also find those on BOTH sides who I want nothing to do with. Most of them seem to think that God has given them the truth, and there can be no discussion. They know what is right, and will do it regardless of the consequences. They use their "rights" without accepting any responsibility.

I agree entirely that there are more significant topics to deal with.

The only thing that has any legitimacy in this discussion is that Cheney fancies himself a defender of traditional values, and morally superior to the rest of us unsaved creatures. It does no good to use the Clinton comparison, as it isn't valid. It is enough to point out the hypocrisy of the right, just as they constantly do with those of us on the left. These folks are no better than what they claim we are. I would much prefer to explore Cheney's tie to no bid contracts, his bosses claims that the elite in this country are his base, and how both of these guys say one thing and then do exactly the opposite, all the while the American public buying into it. But this balloon may be about to burst. In short, there are enough issues out there with substance that arguing over this one is a waste of time.

Mick

Turd though Cheney is, so what if he effed?

Some years ago, during a particularly noisy debate in the Commons, then speaker Bernard Wetherill was calling for an MP to give way, and couldn't be heard over the din and was clearly heard over the microphones to mutter "Fuck him!". Excellent.

Guest TIA,

You mean "but totally not okay for a public servant to lie about his sex life" under oath in a grand jury.

SOmething about the law indicates there is a difference- Perjury is illegal. Or do you place the President above the law? If so, get off Bush's back!

kendall- the right had no reason to jump on Kerry- BUT then you have no right to jump on either Cheny or Bush. To say that it is wrong to criticize someone you agree with for what they say, but ok if they disagree with you, is dishonesty of a sort I wuld not expect of you.

The Senate wasn't in session when Kerry used that word either, but the right wing moralists jumped all over him. Good old American double standard Doug.
And it was ok when Bush called that reporter an asshole too; ON TV!!

Big deal?!?!?

Little window into the morality hierarchy of DougR. I bet it is totally okay to say perhaps the nastiest word in the English language to a fellow public servant, but totally not okay for a public servant to lie about his sex life. Don't worry, I'll get all these rules figured out eventually.

It's too bad it wasn't caught on camera. Then he would get to pay the $250,000 fine that the FCC wants to lay out against people like Howard Stern, Janet Jackson and Bono. I'm all for free speech although I don't let my children swear or listen to programs that use offensive language.
It seems that everyone is being very dismissive about it. I would expect a little more decorum on the senate floor regardless of how people feel about each other. I don't mean to say that this is an "impeachable" event, but they did blast Kerry for it.

It's been worse, I guess:

"He [Randolph] had no respect for Calhoun, or for Clay, who challenged Randolph for using insulting language in a speech, and shot at him, but was spared by the Virginian."

and

"Hon. Charles Sumner, one of the Senators of Massachusetts, was yesterday brutally assaulted by a ruffian named Brooks, who represents South Carolina in the lower House. Those who know Mr. Sumner will readily believe that nothing in his conduct or conversation could have provoked the outrage, and that it must be attributed to the bold and vigorous demonstration of the Kansas inequity, which he has just uttered in the Senate. The reign of terror, then, is to be transferred to Washington, and the mouths of the representatives of the North are to be closed by the use of bowie-knives, bludgeons, and revolvers."

Cheney has been exposed, and people do not care. That is the tragedy inherent in the farce called Congress. The body politic that should rule does not. America will kiss its democracy goodbye if it elects Bush for another term. The use of an expletive verb in the Senate will be the least of anyone's worries; and when the baseball season starts, fans will question the truth of "does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."
Play ball!

Just another hypocrite. Does this mean that the "sleaze factor" is coming back?

Whem Calvin Coolidge was VP, he was presiding over the senate. One northern senator told a southern senator to "Go to hell". He promptly took offence and addressing Mr. Coolidge said, "I have been insulted on the floor of the senate, and I am calling for a ruling from the chair"! Mr. Coolidge, opened one eye and said, "Chair rules you don't have to go."

Patrick Leahy is a damn good senator; Cheney is a crook who deserves to be exposed.

Hay Boburt,

I dun found whut bush thot uv the vulgarity:

"These things happen from time to time," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan when asked what Bush's reaction to Cheney's remark had been.

"You're talking about one incident involving a private exchange," McClellan told reporters traveling with Bush on a trip to Ireland and Turkey. "It's not an issue with the president. The president is looking ahead."

Seems to me one of the reasons some folks are making a big deal of this incident (it's not as if we hadn't heard -- or even read -- the word in question before), is that before he took office, Cheney made a show of saying he wanted to restore civility to the government. Not the best way to do it, methinks.

Well, now . . . let's be fair and cut Cheney a bit of slack here. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, being a Democrat and a liberal, had the impertinence and bad taste to bring up Halliburton, all the contracts they've been getting lately, and Cheney's connection with all this, not to mention that he had the effrontery of reminding people that Cheney used to be CEO of Halliburton and that his stock (which is increasing rapidly in value as a result of all the contracts) is being held in trust for him.

Cheney came up with the best refutation he could.

I just find it unbelievable that these crooks just thought they would be worshipped by everyone. Are they so dense that they don't realize that they are really making a lot of folks very angry with their arrogance and perchant for "ruling" rather than governing?

I just read yesterday that Nancy Paluzi (sp), the minority leader in the House of Representaives has asked that the House leadreship (Repubs) to install a "Bill of Rights" in the House that allows the Dems to participate in the democratic pratice of, ahhh, being allowed to attemd hearings and have ammendments of bills debated and voted upon. The Republican response? Well, it purdy much was the same as Cheney's utterance...

Fir you folks who see nothing wrong with excluding over half the American people from the democratic proscesses I just have one thing to say: you are the unpatriotic and unAmericans among us!
