Troy, many thanks for the additional info about Cumberland Moonshiner (and about the Raw Mash DVD). Since my first posting, my brother emailed me that he doesn't have our old LP, so knowing that it'll be coming out on CD is excellent news. And to answer your question, my brother's name is Jim. (We're twins, actually, and were in 5th and 6th grades at Sewanee Public, 1964-66.)

I think Spring Fed will have the Cumberland Moonshiner out in about two months.But I think maybe Blaine Dunlap and Harmony Korine will be produceing Raw Mash.As soon as I find out something for sure I'll post the info.

There was supposed to be a DVD of the two films about Hamper McBee - RAW MASH and MOUTH MUSIC issued by SPRING FED.
It does not seem to be available.
Do you know if it was ACTUALLY released?

Troy, thanks for the news re a possible release of Cumberland Moonshiner on CD. We lived in Sewanee for a couple of years in the mid-60s -- my brother and I went to Sewanee Public School, and my dad taught at the university -- and we bought the Cumberland Moonshiner LP at a local store. I recently looked through my old LPs, but I don't have it anymore. I've asked my brother to look through his old records to see if he has it, but no word from him yet. In any event, I hope the reissue on CD happens. Great LP.

Just received the CD "The Good Old Fashioned Way" this week, after first learning about it a couple of weeks ago. It's terrific. I remember a number of the same songs (different versions) from Cumberland Moonshiner.

By coincidence, I'm heading to Monteagle on Wednesday for a meeting and will drive over to Sewanee while I'm on the mountain. Looking forward to it.

LP (Prestige FL 14008 Hamper McBee - CUMBERLAND MOONSHINER ??1964).
Do you know who is doing it?
It would be a wonderful addition to the catalog, particularly hope
they also include previously unissued material from these 1962 recordings done by Guy Carawan.

There is in fact a new Hamper McBee release (CD & LP) due out June 22, 2010, through the Twos & Fews imprint on Drag City Records. It's called "The Good Old-Fashioned Way: Hamper McBee of Monteagle, Tennessee" and it's drawn from recent transfers of Charles Wolfe and Sol Korine's 1977-78 recordings of Hamper from the MTSU Center for Popular Music archive, from which came Rounder's "Raw Mash" record. I am aware of 2 LPs by Hamper McBee (Prestige and Rounder), some tracks in anthology albums, and 2 documentary films.
The films were supposed to have been released on DVD, but
seem impossible to find - I've sent an inquiry to the company
and will report back.
There is also an unconfirmed report that a CD of McBee is due
to be issued this year.
I'll post any additional information I find.

fire. I grew up with him being the police in Monteagle. He arrested

I was lucky enough to meet hamper at the knoxville world's fair. Got to spend an hour or so with him, those whoever met him, I need say no more. I have raw mash, but it is autographed to me. If any of his kin, or fans would like a cassette of it, Imight could make a copy. NOVA had a t.v. special, but I can,t find it. I grew up in Monteagle Tn. where Hamper lived. I knew him preety
well. My sister and I were just talking the other day about the
time he got drunk and climbed the water tower in Monteagle and the
police couldn't make him come down. I was a young man at that time
and worked across the street at the Dairy Queen. I still remember
looking up and seeing him up there..That was about 1974 or 1975.
He worked at the Monteagle Silo Co from time to time , and that
is where I remember him from the most. My Father owned the Silo Co
and I worked there from time to time also. My father could tell
you some good stories about Hamper. He knew him real well.

I have a copy of "Cumberland Moonshiner" dated 1964. Of course it's in my other home in Maryland and I won't be there for another three weeks. Don't recall the label or contents other than "The Brown Mountain Light". Like Sandy, I'm not ready to sell from my collection but could probably copy it for anyone interested.

Hamper was a moonshiner he had made moonshine for years, He made a moonshine still at the 1982 worlds fair for the TBI in Knoxville, TN. There was also a documentry on him called "Raw Mash" He had went to New York and was on the "Tom Snider morning show". he had a pretty full life. I was extremely surprised to find out people from all over knew him.

Sandy sorry about that I made post under guest, My   knew Hamper and my uncle was in law enforcment back when Hamper was makining moonshine. I have heard sooo many stories about Hamper yet I personally never got to meet him.
My uncle caught him sleeping at his Moonshine still and   shaved half of Hampers mustach off, He said when Hamper woke up he just started cussing    saying "Julius you SOB!!!" I thought it was funny he knew exactly who had done it..
Anyways I have been lookig for several years , seems no one from his family even has a copy. If there is anyway you would be willing to sell or even a copy on cassette or cd would be better let me know how much you would need for it. I would love to have it.

I love that album. I love the fact that he sings 'Roger Esq', as I do, having heard it on the great Phil Tanner's recording. How and when did it get out to his neck of the woods. Hamper didn't have much connection with the folk scene so it's good to see that he is not forgotten. How is he doing nowadays? Anybody know? Is he still alive even? I'm so glad that somehow Rounder got him on record, God Bless 'em. Hamper's sense of fun and zest for life came leaping off the record, plus the impression that he'd sampled quite a few fruit jars at the time. Somebody please post news of Hamper McBee

I've got a copy of Hamper's album, James. My late business partner spent a couple of days testing a few fruit jars of the local product with him back around 1963 or 4. I'll have to talk with my wife about selling the record (we're both unreconstructed collectors and have never parted with any of the recordings in our collection), but even if she says "no" I can probably arrange to make a respectable copy of it for you.

I found the Mudcat site via Yahoo, and hoped someone might be able to help me locate this LP.
It was recorded in 1978 with Rounder. The name of it was "Raw Mash:Songs and stories of Hamper Mcbee". We originally bought a copy from Hamper years ago and I have asked some of his family but noone seems to have a copy, If anyone here has a copy or the Lp they would not mind selling   or know where I can locate one it would be greatly appreciated.
