My friend learned this song in daycare in 6/8 meter, and I want to add it to my show, but he knows one verse. There has GOT to be additional verses, it's such a catchy, quirkly little song! Right? I mean, there's just GOTTA be, right?
Anyway ;-) If you know the rest of this song, or a source for it, I would be indeed grateful to you.

I sing of the crocodile fearless and bold.
He never got hot, and he never got cold.
He had thick coats and thin coats for days cold and hot,
And a medium coat for the days that are not.

Having just come from Joe Richman's thread on songs to the tune of Villikins and His Dinah, it seems that this song might also use that tune. One of the Australian songs suggested by Joybell is The Nautical Yarn, which starts:

I sing of a capting (captain) that's well known to fame,
An able commander, Bill Jinks was his name.
He sailed where the Murray's clear waters do flow,
Did this fresh-water shellback, with his yo! Heave-aye-oh!

That looks as if both these songs are parodied on some common ancestor.

G'day Artful Codger,

English Music Hall songs were certainly widely known in 19th c. Australia ... but I had a look at / listen to the Mudcat's rendition of Capt. Jinks of the Horse Marines and the tune has no relation to either of the (very different) tunes for The Nautical Yarn (Villikins and his Dinah and Dreadnaught)

... and any resemblance in the text finishes after the word "Captain" ...

Wow, I just heard this tune as part of a woodwind composition, called "westerly winds" by Paul Patterson, and the tune kept going through my mind and I could not get it out of my head. Thank goodness for the internet.

Old business - back on 23 Dec 09 - 11:19 PM Jim Dixon posted a version from a Cub Scout site. It included the notation "Tune: Man on Flying Trapeze". As I look at the lyrics, it seems more likely that the tune would be "Sweet Betsy from Pike".

if your looking for recordings of the aussie childrens song the bold crocodile i'm sorry to say that i cant find any. like all the words that you said on this thread in mudcat and it is related to the villikans tune from joe.
