I will have to check the exact dates but there is a Music Hall song called "When The Evenin' Star Went Down" that is circa civil war. High drama and the message that we are all in the same boat. (ouch!)PM me if you want the lyrics.

From the echo's of my dim brain, I'm remembering a "camping" song we sang when I was a critter. It was always presented as a "french voyager" song. It went, in english, something like this:

"Our paddles flash and back,
Flashing like silver,
Our paddles flash and back,
Dip, dip and swing."

I realize that this is a tender clue on which to hang a song, but perhaps another catter can come through fill in the voids. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson

Good ideas, all. Munsonville is in rural New Hampshire, near the western border. I'm wondering about mill songs, early 20th century boating or canoeing songs (I might pull out "Gum Tree Canoe")- this was not a region well known for its songs but its contra dances! So I'm not trying to be regional so much as topical. But probably no sea shanties.

If you were looking for naval songs I would suggest Roll, Alabama, Roll, The Cumberland etc. Both from the Civil War but they aren't necessarily what you want. Lert me know and I'll try to dig some up. Neil

Where is Munsonville ? Up in the northeast ? I have some river songs but they're about Texas and Oklahoma.

Can I assume you'll not be performing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitsgerald" ?

Probably a few folk classics such as "The Water is Wide" and "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore" would be appreciated. "Bring Me a Little Water, Sylvie" might be a stretch especially if followed by "There's a Hole in the Bucket." Then there's "Fresh-Water Whaling" (search the DT and Threads) for another take on the Great Lakes and the sad demise of their whaling industry.

I've been asked to be the "warm up act" for a talk at the local historical society entitled, "From Water Power to Water Sports, from Civil War to WWII". The talk will focus on the village of Munsonville and the lake it sits on which is now a popular summer sport site- boating, fishing, water skiing, etc.

They aren't asking me to necessarily be topical or historical, but I thought it would be fun to throw in a few songs that fit the topic.

And I'm always interested to know what Mudcatters will come up with!
