Subject: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: graywolf1980 Date: 08 Jul 04 - 12:42 PM I have started a listing of recording dates and catalog numbers for the original Carter Family. I have lots of gaps, and I was wondering if anyone here (with the Victor ledger sheets perhaps) would want to take the time to fill in the gaps. After going through all my stuff, I decided to try the Internet. I found a web site that had a list of all their songs with the recording dates, but I found that they were not correct. For example, when they traveled to a session, that session was usually broken into two days. For example, their first session: some of the songs were recorded on 8/1/1927, while the rest were recorded on 8/2/1927. To view what I have so far, you can go here: Carter Family. However, that's not where I'm keeping it. I just could not post the table commands in this post. Thanks, P.J. |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: GUEST,Dale Date: 08 Jul 04 - 12:58 PM graywolf, all that info is in the box set from Bear Family. I have no time at the moment to look it up, but maybe someone else does. Lots easier when someone has already done it for you! |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: Mark Clark Date: 08 Jul 04 - 12:59 PM P.J., I don't think <http://graywolf1980.ala.nu/carter.htm> is a valid link. Have you got any other details?- Mark |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: GUEST,Dale Date: 08 Jul 04 - 01:12 PM Hey, Mark, good to "see" you. The link worked for me. (complete aside and way off topic ~~ I am pleased as I can be to go see Cassie Franklin tomorrow night at the Center. Wish you could come, it will be an outstanding show.) |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: graywolf1980 Date: 08 Jul 04 - 01:26 PM Hello, The link should work now. I was probably updating it at the same time you were trying to access it. If it happens again, wait about 5 seconds and refresh it. P.J. |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: Mark Clark Date: 08 Jul 04 - 01:44 PM Hi, Dale! Good to "see" you too. Sure wish I could be there. I've just got get Mountain View within at least a couple of hours drive. Jan is already talking about the next Thumbpicking Contest. P.J., Thanks, it works for me now. It was odd, I even tried to look it up using Netcraft but they couldn't find it either. A lot of the recording details were included in the wonderful book Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone by Charles Hirshberg and Mark Zwonitzer. I have a copy but won't have time to check it today. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: graywolf1980 Date: 08 Jul 04 - 03:22 PM Hello, I also have a copy of that book (the uncorrected proof-reading copy). I flipped through it this morning. I think I have even a better start now! I have just about all the recording dates and a whole lot of the catalog numbers. Two things I'm unsure of in my document: the October 12, 1932 session (were some songs recorded on the 13th?) and on the catalog numbers, I don't know if I have the correct side labeled A or B on most of them. P.J. |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: nutty Date: 08 Jul 04 - 03:30 PM Try this site .....there are numerous recordings of the Carter Family on 78's. It gives all the info as well. Honking Duck |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: GUEST,Dale Date: 08 Jul 04 - 04:50 PM Yes, there are songs from both the 12th and 13th. Broken Hearted Lover is the last one listed for the 12th, Two Sweethearts is the first for the 13th. The others from the 13th are The Winding Stream, I Wouldn't Mind Dying, The Spirit Of Love Watches Over Me, The Church In The Wildwood. Like I said, I have a shortage of time at the moment, but I'll be happy to help you fill in your blanks ~~ eventually. |

Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Apr 07 - 02:08 AM Once I'm done with school at the end of May, I'm thinking of doing a study of all the Carter Family songs, posting lyrics and comments for all songs in a series of thread based on the recording dates - more-or-less based on the DTStudy threads, but maybe with just one or two messages per song, one thread per recording date or something like that. It's my feeling that many songs attributed to the Carter Family are actually from earlier sources - sources that are out of copyright. I think it would be nice to have information on every song, so the Harry Fox Agency doesn't collect royalties on songs that are really in the public domain. Any ideas/opinions? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: GUEST,Pete Peterson Date: 17 Apr 07 - 09:07 PM Hi Joe, (We met a few years back (maybe 1999? )in West Chester PA where we had both shown up for Mudcat Internet Radio.) As has already been said about recording dates, much of your work has been done for you by Charles Wolfe and his graduate students and are in the book that accompanies the Bear Family set. Opening at random to page 55, we find earlier sources (all before 1923 and therefore in the public domain) for all five songs recorded on May 25, 1931. It is at least clear that AP did not write them. I don't blame AP for copyrighting the songs. Somebody gave me the image of AP as somewhat like an American Indian, on being asked to sell his land, "Well, Chief, we will pay you $50 in beads for your agreement to sell it to us settlers." "I don't understand. Who can own the land? Who can own the sky? Who can own the wind?" "Never mind. Just sell us YOUR title to it and that's all that we need." "Let me think. . .pretty beads. . . Okeh!" and each side departed thinking they had taken advantage of the other. |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Apr 07 - 05:09 AM Hi, Pete - I was hoping you'd chime in. Of course, I remember you - almost as well as I remember the lovely Eileen who was performing with you. I was afraid you were going to remind me that I really ought to buy the Bear Family box, in addition to the JSP and Rounder and Columbia recordings I already have. I wish there were a way to get just the book.... -Joe- |

There's an interesting history of the Carter Family at Native Ground Music. Also take a look at "The Carter Family on Border Radio" at honkytonks.org. And here's an article about the Bristol Sessions at peermusic.com |
Subject: RE: Carter Family Recording Dates & Catalog From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 18 Apr 07 - 07:48 AM Surely all the recording information that you are trying to gather is available in Tony Russell's amazing Country Music discography. That combined with Charles Wolfe's information should give you anything you wish to know. Re A.P Carter and the copyright bit, sure he collected and adapted and re-arranged existing songs and if you know anything about Ralph Peer and Southern Music and how he operated you will understand why. It's all available if you read the books. Hoot |
