Subject: BS: The end of the world is nigh.
From: GUEST,worried

So for many years there have been people walking around with sandwich boards which tell us that "The end of the world is nigh" So is it so????? Someone told me to read my Bible to see the truth and so I have. The references they gave me are seemingly saying that there will be earthquakes in places where they were not before YES There will be pestilence,(Mosquitos in an American city, which had to be destroyed only last year) Wars and rumours of wars etc etc etc.....So are we in the end times that the Bible predicts and if so what do we do about it??? Tell me as it really has me gripped.

Which American city was destroyed last year because of mosquitoes? I must have missed it.

I doubt if there is anyplace on earth that hasn't ever had earthquakes.

and dang few that don't have mosquitos or sickness of one sort or another.

Likewise point out to me any time period greater then possibly a few days in the last few centuries where there hasn't been "war or rumours of war" SOMEWHERE

GUEST, you are among millions and millions of people who have been worrying about this ever since the 1st Century A.D. There has never been a century in which the various signs you mention did not occur. There are always wars and rumours of war, pestilences, unexpected earthquakes in unexpected places, etc. Always! You just have to look for them and by golly you will find them. :-)

Believe me on this. The world has been "about to end" ever since the year 1, and it will be "about to end" long after you or I have shuffled off this mortal coil.

There's a pschological reason for people to think that way...which is this: they are mortal. They know darned well that the drama of their particular little physical life is going to end at some point (though I believe their soul goes on afterward, but that's another issue). Knowing that their own end is in the cards, it hardly seems fair that the whole World should go on so nicely without them. All our stories have an end, so why shouldn't the World? It makes for a neat, complete, and satisfying conclusion to the whole thing, right?

This is foolish. The World is not going to end, it's going to change. The Universe is not going to end, it's going to change. Everything changes.

Besides, those passages in the Bilbe are not really so much about an outward physical event as they are about an inner spiritual event that occurs inside each person when they go through spiritual development and change. When your spiritual consciousness undergoes a profound shift (as it does when you attain "Christ consciousness", for example) then the old World that you knew does indeed end...because you are seeing it through new eyes. That doesn't mean that the physical planet has ended, it just means that your way of perceiving life has changed radically.

So many Christians were terrified about the "end of the World" around the approach of the year 1000 that thousands and thousands of people went crazy and killed themselves....or killed other people....or did various ridiculous things, creating social chaos.

Guess what? It didn't end in the year 1000. It won't end this time either, but I would be very surprised if it didn't keep changing some. That's the nature of Life.

Anyway, whether it ended or not, that wouldn't change your spiritual challenges one iota as far as I'm concerned.

Pretty well put Little Hawk, except I would add that guest, worried is watching his life pass by and not doing enough living.

I would first suggest getting a picture of Alfred E. Newman (What, me worry?) to gaze at everyday and to consider finding something that gives his/her life meaning. Christ might not be the answer.

Guest worried...If you wish to find out more about Christianity...which I would imagine your friend is trying to interest you in...go to Alphacourse.org and find a course near you. Go on the course, learn what is there and then choose for yourself which path you take. Be Blessed.

Of course, you could get even more confused if you go that route.

Hmmm, should I choose Lutheran, Catholic, Protestant, Episcopalan (supporting gay priests or not), Mormon, Baptist, Reformed church. I must be missing something else.

And remember this...within Christianity itself you will find many different opinions and interpretations regarding both the Bible and the life of Jesus. Investigate, follow your own best instincts, and keep an open mind. A teaching based on love is a far better guide than a teaching based on fear.

Then, if you have the time and inclination, look into the Muslim teachings, the Hindu traditions, the Buddhist traditions, the Jewish religion, the Zoroastrian and Bahai religions, the North American Indian Medicine Way, and so on. You may find that the central spiritual ideas in all of them have a great deal in common. Or you may not. That will depend on your nature, not the teachings themselves.

The Christian Bible? Probably only applies to that portion (less than half) of the world where there is a significant Christian population.

I'm waiting for the Rupture, when all the dead folks will be raised up bodily.

Sure is gonna be crowded.

Don't worry about the world coming to an end, wars and rumours of wars, stars falling from the sky, great beasts with 666 on their foreheads trotting around, or any of the rest of it.

I have it on excellent authority that no one knows the day or the hour.

                   Channel Firing

That night your great guns, unawares,
Shook all our coffins as we lay,
             And broke the chancel window-squares,
We thought it was the Judgment-day

             And sat upright. While drearisome
Arose the howl of wakened hounds:
The mouse let fall the altar-crumb,
The worms drew back into the mounds,

             The glebe cow drooled. Till God called, "No;
It's gunnery practice out at sea
             Just as before you went below;
The world is as it used to be:

"All nations striving strong to make
Red war yet redder. Mad as hatters
They do no more for Christés sake
Than you who are helpless in such matters.

"That this is not the judgment-hour
For some of them's a blessed thing,
For if it were they'd have to scour
Hell's floor for so much threatening ....

"Ha, ha. It will be warmer when
I blow the trumpet (if indeed
I ever do; for you are men,
             And rest eternal sorely need)."

So down we lay again. "I wonder,
Will the world ever saner be,"
Said one, "than when He sent us under
             In our indifferent century!"

And many a skeleton shook his head.
             "Instead of preaching forty year,"
             My neighbour Parson Thirdly said,
"I wish I had stuck to pipes and beer."

Again the guns disturbed the hour,
             Roaring their readiness to avenge,
As far inland as Stourton Tower,
             And Camelot, and starlit Stonehenge.

Called it clap when I was a kid. However, . . . .

The world will end or it won't.

If it does, you won't be here to worry about it. If it doesn't end, you will be here to worry about it.

You will end or you won't. If you do end, you won't be here to worry about it. If you don't end, you will be here to worry about it.

So, it goes like this: Keep worrying, because it means the world didn't end. And if we know YOU are doing the worrying, then the rest of us can relax.

Worrying puts a strain on the nervous system and accomplishes nothing useful whatsoever.

I can easily recall numerous occasions in the past 50 years when various people assured me that the World was shortly going to end (sometimes on a specific day even). It never did.

One was a friend I had when I was ten years old. She had heard the World was going to end and was very concerned. I said that if she really believed it, she might as well give me all her toys and stuff, cos she wouldn't be needing them. She refused! Evidently her faith was not rock solid. Well, when the World didn't end she was kind of embarrassed, but glad that at least she hadn't given me all those toys.

Now, imagine the frustration and chagrin of someone who's been telling everyone the World will end at noon on July 30th, so they'd better repent...and then he gets hit by a truck and killed on the afternoon of July 29th...and MISSES the whole thing by a day!!! ARGH! He never even gets to find out if he was right all along...and if so, to say, "See? I told you it was going to end!" to all those people who scoffed at him.

Contemplating the following restores a sense of perspective. Nowadays the end may come in different ways, but the sentiment is still the same!

WE WILL ALL GO TOGETHER WHEN WE GO

When you attend a funeral
It is sad to think that sooner or
Later those you love will do the same for you
And you may have thought it tragic
Not to think of other adject-
Ives to think of all the weeping they will do
(But don't you worry)
No more ashes, no more sack cloth
And an arm band made of black cloth
Will someday never more adorn a sleeve.
For if the bomb that drops on you
Gets your friends and neighbors too
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve.

And we will all go together when we go,
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement,
An inspiring achievement,
Yes, we all will go together when we go.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance
Lloyds of London will be loaded when they go.

We will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be french fried potatoes bye and bye.
There will be no more pain or misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we all will fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom
There'll be a storm before the calm.

And we'll all bake together when we bake.
There'll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation,
In that grand incineration
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

We will all char together when we char.
And let there be no moaning at the bar.
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.
And the party will be "come as you are".

We will all burn together when we burn.
There'll be no need to stand and wait your turn.
When it's time for the fallout,
And Saint Peter calls us all out
We'll just drop our agendas and adjourn.

You will all go directly to your respective Valhallas
Go directly. Do not pass GO. Do not collect two hundred dolla's

And we will all go together when we go
Ev'ry Hottentot and ev'ry Eskimo
When the air becomes uranious
We will all go simultaneous
Yes we all will go together when we all go together
Yes we all will go together when we go

Whatever fears, philosophy, beliefs you might have, the unconscious ones have just as powerful impact on your life as the conscious ones. eg do you believe life is a struggle or that things will always work out for the best; are people basically good or basically lousy.. other larger philosphical positions tend to get influenced by those unconscious ones, that are learnt as a kid through the way people treat you.

but the test for any views held has to be..   does this enhance my life or limit it. do these views make me feel good or bad. and what sort of people do i meet who share these views - are they worth knowing? i am cautious of many people who purport to have "answers" - remember, if you don't like the answer, are you asking the wrong question?

there's absolutely no point worrying about things you can't control, this is not denial, its sensible. its a good thing to occasionally look at small parts of your life that you can control, and make them more enjoyable. (from cooking more interesting food, reading different things, changing the channel, joining a film club, hiking, going one night a month to a comedy club, who knows what).

these things don't answer the big questions, but they make the many small moments more fun.. and that, to me, is the answer..

best wishes

freda

Any slice of time you look at real closely can look just like those prophecies. Not to worry about which slice is THE slice, though. The good news is, the principles for living are not time-specific. The bad news? Ya still gotta figgger 'em out for yourself and then actually try to LIVE them.

So never mind the temptation to hysteria-- assume you had forever, available to you: What would you like to be doing, that you know would be a good thing to do, that you aren't doing? Do it! :~)

This "Repent! The End is Near!" stuff is from nominal Christians who have spent more time reading The Book of Revelation than they have reading the Gospels, which, to me, calls their "Christianity" into question. The core of Christianity is to be found in Matthew 25:35-40, and Matthew 5:3-11, not in The Book of Revelation, which, historically, was less of a religious text and more of a polemic against the Roman Empire. There are many Bible scholars who maintain that it doesn't even belong in the Bible and wonder why the geezers back then chose to include it.

Will the world come to an end? Most certainly. Life, of course, could be obliterated on earth any number of ways:   some group of morons at the helm of some aggressive and/or paranoid nation could start an all-out thermonuclear war, precipitate a "nuclear winter," and wipe out all higher forms of life, but will probably leave a few life forms about to begin evolution again (unless, of course, radioactive saturation of the planet is sufficient to destroy all life); with our polluting of the oceans and the atmosphere, we could poison the planet's ecosphere and wipe out most or all life (what would be particularly lethal would be for humanity, through carelessness, stupidity, and greed, to push the planet beyond the point-of-no-return into a runaway greenhouse effect, in which the earth could become like Venus, where there are no oceans and the atmosphere is somewhat hotter that a well-stoked pizza oven); the planet could be struck by any one of a number of earth-orbit crossing asteroids big enough to blast away much of the atmosphere, cause tidal waves thousands of feet high, and earthquakes of a power beyond imagining. Or maybe some tenacious, virus, undetectable or unstoppable by medical science could sweep through both human and animal populations of the world, leaving only plant life. Or perhaps some equally unstoppable blight might evolve and destroy all plant life on earth( the basis of the food chain), in which case, animal life (including us) would starve to death. Or maybe—

But earth abides. If we humans cause a planetary catastrophe and obliterate ourselves, the earth, following the natural processes it has followed for billions of years, will cleanse itself, heal, and quite probably evolve many new species—possibly a species far wiser than we.

But even than, the world will come to an end—when the sun has used up all of its fuel and begins to implode into a white dwarf. In the first phase of this, the sun bloats temporarily into a red giant, with its outer atmosphere expanding as far out as the orbit of Mars or beyond. This, of course, will blow away the atmosphere, boil off the oceans, and incinerated all life on earth. Following this, the sun's outer atmosphere will dissipate into space, leaving a hot, dense, white star not much larger than the earth. It will continue to burn intensely for many billions more years, then gradually fade into a red dwarf (famous in British telly), a brown dwarf, then fade into a dark cinder that continues to drift through space. But not a black hole. The sun does not contain enough matter to implode that violently.

And when will all this begin to happen? Approximately five to seven billion years from now.

When this happens, it may be that we, should we manage somehow to transcend our own flaws and acquire wisdom, or that inherently wiser species I spoke of, will have survived long enough to have spread to many other planets, and are living in peace among themselves and the others they may encounter in the Universe.

There is the joke about the astronomy class, in which the professor outlined the eventual death of the sun, as I have above. A hand went up in the back row. "Yes?" asked the professor. "How long will it be before this happens?" asked a tremulous voice. "Well, astronomers estimate that it would be five to seven billion years." "Oh, thank God!" said the tremulous voice, "I thought you said five to seven million years!"

I wouldn't sweat it a lot.

I've been partial to Frost's

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

The great prophet William Miller predicted, correctly, that the world would end on 22 October 1844. It did, and the Millenium came and the Rapture came and all the rest happened. It's been over for nearly 160 years. However, humans are perverse and either didn't notice or chose to ignore it.

Sorry, Bill D. I first heard that joke in an astronomy class I took while at the U. of W. It was told by the professor.

And GUEST, the bad news is that we could be wiped out in a whole variety of wild and hairy ways. The good news is two-fold:
1. Some of the ways we could be wiped out, we have control over if we choose to exert that control; and
2. We're still here.

For those who are familiar with End Times prophecies, key institutions and prominent individuals have been observing the signs and pointing them out for some time.

The Catholic Church recently referred to this as "a time of wars and rumours of wars", a direct quote from the apocalyptic prophecies of the Christian scripture:

http://www.theinsider.org/mailing/article.asp?id=0064

To all those in this group who dismiss prophecy as childish nonsense, I would remind you that the US President, the most powerful man in the world, is a self-confessed believer, and openly looks forward to the end of the world when, he believes, Christ will descend to judge and rule forever.

As one commentator wrote at the turn of the millennium:

"You may not believe in gods or prophecy, but among the leaders of nations there are those who do." (T. Acheson, 1999)

Or maybe before that. Or after that. But William Miller said October, 1844, even though he'd been wrong earlier that year.

Frankly, I don't give tinker's damn WHAT other people believe about this. Even the friggin' Vatican.

But I suggest, since they are all supposed to be Bible-readin' folks, they re-read Matthew 24:36, Matthew 24:50, and Luke 12:46 -- among others.

And then stop worrying about it.

I'm enjoying the hell out of life, Marty, as I am sure Amos is. Amos, if you care to check member profiles, has had a pretty darned adventurous life (and what have you done?). A major aspect of our enjoyment is folk music and all aspects of it, and that's what draws us to a web site like Mudcat, where we can exchange knowledge and experience. But being intelligent people with wide-ranging interests, we discuss other things as well. Some people spend a lot of time on Mudcat (such as people like Teribus, who seems to have little else to do), but others of us pop in for a few minutes maybe a couple two or three times a day to see if anything new has been posted on threads that interest us.

Granted, I spend most of my day at the computer, but off-line, flogging the word processor, because I am now a writer by trade (several published magazine articles and a book in the works). Not all that much of my time is spent in cyberspace, but I do spend some time there doing research for my writing. I also pull out one of my guitars at least once a day, practice for an hour or so and sing through a number of songs, both old and newly learned, partly to keep my hand in and mostly because I love it. I don't perform three or four nights a week as I did some years ago, but I do still perform with some regularity. Contrary to what you seem to think (encountering me only here on Mudcat and not having enough imagination to think that this might be only a small facet of my life), I have lots of contact with the world outside of cyberspace. I am married to a wonderful woman, we live in a large, comfortable apartment, we have many friends, we enjoy a full social life, and we entertain often.

But what puzzles me is how someone who gets his jollies (you've said so several times, Marty) by coming into a thread in which a serious exchange of information is occurring and, having nothing of consequence to add, attempts to disrupt the discussion by posting snide and snotty remarks, replete with insults consisting mostly of references to bodily functions (invariably centered around the crotch) of people he has never met can still reasonably insist that he is a happy man with a full life. If he is indeed happy and has a full life, why does he not have anything of consequence to add? Why does he want to disrupt the discussion? Why is he so full of bitterness, nastiness, and—yes, quite probably—hatred? And what sort of perverted outlook can convince him that he's having fun doing this? This is the same sort of fun a street-corner lout gets by pulling out the spray can and defacing the front of a building. Very mature.

No. This is a person who is narrow-minded, intellectually shallow, and fixated at the emotional level of a three-year-old (characteristically fascinated by bodily functions, especially excrement), and who, again, like a three-year-old, is ego-centered, has nothing to add to an adult conversation, but demands attention anyway.

You may be be fifty years old, Marty, but Amos has you pegged. Obviously you never grew up.

Don Firth

I have to thank Don for rising to my defense, but I also have to give you some credit -- your creative insults would be just the right thing to draw blood if I was who you think I am. Unfortunately, I ain't. So they fall flat in the dust.

I have a life, working as an engineer and systems analyst; I have a place of my own in the world, friends and family, and am generally p[retty damn happy with my life. What I protest about in the world is usually things like man's inhumanity to man, and the stupidity of a nation that votes for storm troopers. Aside from that, and wishing I could have my 35-year old weight and muscle tone back, I'm doing fine, thanks!

Aside from that I think Don pretty well said it all.

Well, who says I don't believe in Gods or prophecy, GUEST? I just may interpret that prophecy in a different way, though...as a metaphor for something that happens inside a human being rather than out there in the outer World. Or I might not. Depends on the prophecy. A lot of the prophecies in Revelation appear to me to be about the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, for instance. If so, they were fulfilled quite some time ago. Christ also prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem (by the Romans). The persecution of Christians by Imperial Rome was also prophesied. Any number of things have been prophesied here and there...many of them by holy men who are not part of either the Bible or the Christian religion. Same came true, and some did not...or not in the way that people expected.

I imagine that Hitler figured the World was ending in April 1945! For him and his regime, it most certainly did.

Accordingly, what is the "proper political viewpoint" all depends on whom you are talking to...

The same phenomenon can be seen happening with Israelis and Palestinians or Protestant and Catholic Irish.

Never pay ANY attention to a fact that does not support your accustomed position! Such facts do not deserve your attention, and are probably the work of the Devil!!!! (he can alter reality to mislead people, right?)

Heh! Heh!

Thanks, Guest for the stats on don firth. It is obvious by your thankful contribution, you've proved a real point.

Don and amos, I don't try to justify my existance to you. why do you feel so necessary to justify yours to me?

Mudcat is to me something different than it is to you. I like the music part of it and like to contribute. The BS section represents to me some of the most egotistical and pompous personalities I have seen. It has nothing to do what you do for a living or having a wonderful wife. I am not full of hatred, bitterness, or nastiness as you say, however I am somewhat fun loving and mystified that this vehicle means so much to you to feel important.

Just look at those 3300+ posts Don.

well - according to strict canon - no.

However he can alter the perception of reality - which for all intents and purposes is the same thing - however should the devil "change" say - molten lead to wine and you drink it - you still end up with a scorched and seared esophagus and a bellyful of lead - you just wouldn't notice it at first.

It looks to me like GUEST and Marty don't have enough to do if they spend their time counting up who posted how many times. I wasn't referring to the number of times Teribus has posted, but to the length of his posts. And as far as the number of times I've posted, note that that works out to about two posts a day. Not that much less than Teribus, but thoroughly understandable if you note that, granted I do write up some fairly long posts sometimes, many of my posts are one-liners   Terubus' posts tend to run on to 1,000 or more words, full of statistics and stuff that he's had to research (at least, he claims he has), so the actual time that goes into one of his posts is probably a lot more than mine. Since you have so much time on your hands and you seemed to be so interested in statistics, you might try downloading all of my posts and all of Teribus' posts, doing a total word count on both of us and then compare. That would give you a better indication of who spends more time doing what. Also, some of the things I post are cut-and-paste from the book I'm writing. Takes only a moment. And some of the things I write here qualify as first drafts for the book or for magazine articles. So many of my posts do double-duty. I make no apologies.

And Marty, of course you find me boring. You have to dismiss me. If you agreed with my assessment of you as a total person, your bitterness, nastiness, and your level of intellectual and emotional maturity, it would be a major blow to your sick little ego and you'd probably wind up in a corner curled up in the fetal position sucking your thumb.

Have a nice day.

I didn't count your posts. Guest did. but you count others words and criticize.

You are obsessed with your own importance.

I find your posts boring because they have nothing to say. I don't agree at all of your assessment of me because it is wrong. Your level of intellectual and emotional maturity is just what is so boring about you.

You say nothing but blah, blah, blah and expect people to nod their head and agree with you.

It's just blah, blah, blah. Bottle it and sell it to insomniacs. No swearing, Don. No name calling as you do. Just my truthful and honest assessment of Don Firth's biggest fan. Himself.

At first I thought this was a serious discussion. I apologise for any misunderstanding.

It's easy to jump on the cynical bandwagon when prophecy is mentioned and refuse to take it seriously. Most people do, but they rarely have anything original or insightful to contribute to the debate. Congratulations to everybody who made cheap jokes and sarcastic remarks, I was impressed by your wit. No, really.

For those of you on this forum who have an open-mind, you may wish to seek the facts and consider them for yourself before passing judgement.

Just because some people don't agree does not make them closed-minded and your own sarcasm does not trump that of others.

You're also asking us to believe in these prophecies based upon the fact that George W. Bush believes. This is the same man who believed the people who told him there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Have you anything a bit more concrete to offer?

Something seems to be emerging on this thread as it has on many others. I would call it unhealthy competition but perhaps I am misled.
Is it important who puts the longest write ups on a thread or replies to most threads? Personally I like to reply to the ones I feel I have something important to say on but also allow myself the joy of putting replies or starting threads of a light hearted nature. Once again some nastiness appears....It costs so little to be courteous to and tolerant of people even if you fail to accept their opinions. Of course I once again expect to have to survive another attack for voicing this opinion and will no doubt be told I am "holier than thou" in manner by some of those who feel "shot at" but there you go.
Be Blessed.

That sort of post is bound to get negative comments, but this crowd will debate it seriously, even if we disagree. It didn't really 'feel' like a question, but only a request for assurance and agreement.

Your post was barely more than that, and included the silliness suggesting that if GW Bush agrees, it sure oughta be true! What DO you expect when you lead with your chin?

I wasn't referring to the number of times Teribus has posted, but to the length of his posts. (Don Firth)

That comes close to argumentaum ad ignorantiam which you have so beautifully explained in a recent post. It could be done in principle but it would be very time consuming.

I did it the easy way, Don, with two small samples.

In this thread, you have posted an average of 255 words per post in seven posts. I took Teribus last seven posts in the old Mudcat search for comparison (eliminating one empty post) and found an average of 121 words per post.

I know that Teribus writes very long posts sometimes but so do others including you and me.

My cursory impression, Don, is that you have claimed something as a fact which was based on faulty personal impression and nothing else. When you have been corrected on the number of posts you quickly did switch to length of posts. My first quick check did not come out in favour of your claim.

Could it simply be that you are wrong? We all know that diatribes from people we do not agree with seem to be much longer (and unnessessarily so) than those of people we agree with. And the posts we ourselves write are concise and mostly too short to tell all the good arguments we know. You may have been a victim of this bias.

I have often done some counts when people have claimed something on the posting history, for here personal impression can be checked against reality (and as many know, I always look for dsicrepancies between personal impression and reality). One more example: Ake recently has claimed that right-wing posters use more often than left-wing posters words belittling opponents. If one actually counts one finds that that is simply not true. Ake here is partially blind, for he spots the offenders on the other side of the political continuum and overlooks them on his side.

Wolfgang

To you, Wolfgang, because I respect your opinions, I intended no insult.

I made an estimate, judging from the length of Teribus' posts and the deluge of statistics that he includes, that he posts more wordage than I do in the same period of time. I did not actually count. If I am wrong, very well, then I am wrong and I am sorry. I do wonder, however, why this matter seems to be so important, unless the purpose is simply to discredit me.

I grow extremely weary of the silly, stupid remarks that some people seem to feel impelled to post in a thread that has the possibility for a serious exchange of viewpoints and information. Partly, I am at fault for even responding to these trolls. I shall attempt to refrain in the future, and if a thread becomes too silly, I shall simply withdraw from it and go elsewhere.

Once again, Wolfgang, although I wonder why you felt it necessary to spend your time counting my wordage, I meant no insult to you.

I had somehow the impression you did not mean me and I'm really glad for that.

The tactic to point to a minor error (and/or bad spelling) to try to discredit a position is often used in Mudcat too. I personally find it best in such a case to post 'thanks for the correction' and go on with the main focus of the discussion. Every other reaction in my eyes only helps the others do what they consider their job.

Speaking about job, part of my research is about human errors of all types. Whenever I find a possibility to objectively check the accuracy of an impression or a memory I do it. Everywhere else, but also in Mudcat, when the opportunity comes. So when my wordprocessor was counting the words I was actually working. One of the rare situations when I can consider Mudcatting being part of my work.

Little Hawk, I know that he is qualified because I see him all of the time, know his wife and family, know that he is a true spiritual leader of our community and is a good person.

all I know about georgiansilver is that he hangs around this web site and fancies himself as some kind of spiritual leader here. I picture him to look like friar Tuck in a monk's robe tied by a rope and a monk hair style with a bald spot in the middle.

My rabbi's blessings seem to come natually while this guy seems to be trying to play some role. Also, I know my Rabbi asks for blessings from the one true God, the God of Moses and the people of Israel. I have no idea who G-silver is asking to bless me. Be Blessed? by whom or what?

Is your way is to try to upset as many people as you can on here? I will not be upset or intimidated by your words. There are many people on Mudcat whose opinions I value...even if I do not always agree with them. Unfortunately, your opinions seem to revolve around what you think of other people...which always seems to be negative..not their opinions on threads. It would appear that many of your comments on other people are unjustly made in any case. Such a pity you don't channel your thoughts into sensible conversation which I am sure you are capable of.

Okay, Martin, fair enough about your rabbi. So what bugs you about Georgiansilver is...you DON'T know him...and you're not sure where he's really coming from. Well, so what? Why worry about it? If God is in everyone (and by definition, He must be), then to bless everyone would seem to be a reasonable spiritual practice to follow. I don't think it necessarily indicates any kind of smug superiority on GS's part, but rather a belief in equality.

We agree there is one God. So obviously it is by that one God that GS is suggesting people be blessed.

The reason we do not sound more English is because we were a Dutch place for quite a while and speak English (some of us) with Dutch accents, or so I have been told. mg

Why does 'prayer' scare people
This old thread (and the part II thread with the same theme) may give Georgiansilver some ideas about the diversity of the people here.

The reaction of the Mudcatters to the use of religious formulations in daily exchanges is mixed.

There's hardly any decade in the last millenium for which there has not been a prediction of the end of the world. In the last hundred years, there has been an average of about one prediction per year. Last year, I know of two predictions of the end of the world (last time I looked one was still in the web in 2004!), this year I only know of one (for some date in October; if someone is worried when exactly to bid goodbye to the friends and relations, PM me for the exact date).

The next "this time for sure" prediction is for 2012 when for some believers the Maya calendar runs out of numbers and therefore...

One thing seems to be sure to me: when the world comes to its end there'll be someone who has predicted the end for exactly that year.

Wolfgang

The Gospel according to Merriam-Webster (please rise):—
nigh (nî) adverb
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English; akin to Old High German, adverb, nigh, preposition, nigh, after, Old Norse nigh.
Date, before 12th century

Definition
1 : near in place, time, or relationship — often used with on, onto, or unto
2 : NEARLY, ALMOST
(You may be seated.)

It is also listed in Merriam-Webster (lastest electronic version, by the way) as an adjective, a preposition, and a verb; and in compound form as well-nigh.

Although it may be considered an archaic term (from the 12 century or earlier), it is still very much in common usage in English speaking countries (but perhaps not in Chicago — or perhaps not to those who have a limited vocabulary)

Your welcome,

Don Firth

Correction:   erroneous diacritical mark in the pronunciation of "nigh" in the above post. In the cut-and-past from MS Word to Mudcat, it did not translate properly; it switched from a dash to a caret. The correct pronunciation is with a long "i"; rhymes with "my". But I'm sure most of use know that.

A conversation is like a dance. It takes two to tango.

I like the word "nigh". It's a lovely word. I hope it soon regains popularity in Chicago. The word "like" on the other hand is getting over-used these days, and should be accompanied by a 25 cent surcharge for each unnecessary utterance. If this were done the national debt could be paid off in a week, due solely to the efforts of teenage girls!

As for Chicago, 8 million people can't be wrong. After all, we have Da Bears, da Bulls and our beloved Mayor Daley.

It is really a stupid, OUTFATED old English word, though and very, very WASPish. People don't use it in normal conversation, especially people who don't walk around quoting dictionaries, or Bible spouting wannabes.

I asked Chongo about it, and he says that no real Chimp he ever knew ever uses the word "nigh" in normal conversation. It appears that Chongo and Martin are in agreement on this one.

Yes, people use it in what is to them normal conversation. They might be more rural and Southern American, I don't know. I think it is more commonly used in the south, but we have had huge internal migrations, such as where I am from, especially following the dust bowl and in WWII to work in shipyards etc. Vancouver WA has a huge Appalachian population, and whole towns in Washington have a very large southern population. Lots of people use this expression. There is no one American accent or vocabulary (except we have been told that the PNW one is sort of news broadcaster standard). There is no reason any of us should be surprised that old, outdated English words should remain in usage in America. There are pockets in North America where English words and phrases are maintained that were lost in the Auld Country. Rural hamlets and poor roads and all. It's something we just have to deal with I guess.... mg

Right as usual, Little Hawk. Although rather than a tango, this has been, perhaps, more like (nigh unto) a fencing lesson. I used to fence years ago and, as evidenced by a case full of trophies and medals, I grew to be a swordsman of considerable skill and force.

Actually, my crossing blades with Marty has exacted minimal time, little energy, and the only emotional attention involved started with mild irritation when Marty first began responding to some of my serious posts some months back, not with contributions to a rational discussion, but toilet-oriented insults. The irritation quickly changed to a bit of fun:   a battle of wits in which I (cruelly, I admit) engaged an opponent who is poorly armed and ill-trained for such combat. This verbal fencing match involved my swift, humorous ripostes to his crude, clumsy, and easily parried thrusts.

This is essentially the method of handling hecklers that Bob Gibson (no relation to Martin Gibson, even though they are both associated with Chicago) explained to me back in 1958 when he spent a couple of weeks in Seattle. "Don't lose your cool," Gibson told me. "Turn it into an opportunity for comedy. Draw the heckler out and let him make a fool of himself." Since Marty started out by heckling me, this is the technique I adopted.

This has gradually morphed into boredom. Since Marty also heckled other people, some of whom also began responding with humorous barbs, I noticed that since Marty seems to have a compulsion to answer each one of us, it was possible for just a few of us working in relays to keep him spinning like a top. However, it has become tedious and repetitive, so I am leaving the field to others. Naturally, Marty will continue to heckle me wherever I go, but henceforth, rather than attempting to explain to him the error of his ways along thrusts of my rapier-like wit, all he will get from me now will be selections from my vast store of hilarious one-liners.

Due to my commitment to more interesting and important things, this will be my last lengthy post to or about Fartin' Gibbon. Any further responses from me to his feeble lunges with his dull sword will be to a) simply ignore him, or b) skewer him (once again) with a single swift and devastating riposte.

The mark of a great soul is to love all mankind, even the least lovable. Or, at least, to try. As Georgiansilver would say, be blessed.

I wouldn't go that far, but I can understand people being that impressed by His Kirkness of course...because he is so...charismatic. Still, I think Shatner's mission differs from that of Jesus or Buddha or other such avatars in certain key areas which are fairly obvious...and that is why I am going to spare you by not listing all of them at this time.

A Stella was the first guitar I rented for my first 6 guitar lessons over 42 years ago. They are the worst sounding pieces of crap ever. Student/low end guitars I would say are far superior today. At least the necks are not Louisville Sluggers and the pick-guards are painted on.

I play and own old Martins, Gibsons, and one fabulously set up vintage Harmony Sovereign. I personally think Taylor guitars have as much personality as a protozoa, Epiphones (modern) are just Gibson designs with inferior materials and workmanship, and Collings are half way decent but I wouldn't necessarily buy one as it has no vintage vibe.

Marty, a genuine informative answer to my wisecrack post. Very good. It is possible. So in attempt at an actual exchange of information, which, if allowed to develop, could be interesting and informative for both of us. . . .

My start on the guitar was similar, but I think I got lucky. My first guitar was a "Regal." $9.95, plus $5.00 for a fiberboard case, a copy of Nick Manoloff's How to Play the Guitar, a genuine Nick Manoloff "Chord Wheel" (excellent device: it taught me the Circle of Fifths and which chords go with which keys right off), and a free plastic pick (which I never used). It sounded like it was made from old apple crates (probably was), but the fingerboard was fairly accurate and the action was nice and soft (somebody goofed at the factory and turned out one that was actually playable). I got my first really good guitar about a year later: a Martin 00-18. I've owned several Martins and they were all excellent, but fairly early on I switched over to nylon-string classics. In that category, European luthiers make the best instruments. I'm primarily a ballad-singer and I play some classic guitar, so that's the direction I took. Currently, my two prized guitars are a José Oribé concert classic that I've had for about thirty years and an Arcangel Fernandez flamenco guitar that I got in 1961 and has just kept improving over the years. It's been appraised at $18,000, but no sale! The only way anyone would ever get that guitar away from me would be to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

I think you mentioned once that you were mostly interested in country or bluegrass. Good choice of guitars for that. Did I get it right? Tell me more.

This whole "Rapture" business is, to quote our old friend DougR, "horse puckey!!" It comes from a complete misinterpretation and misrepresentation of verses taken out of context from the Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation, plus distortions of presumed quotations of Jesus (again, badly misinterpreted) cherry-picked and taken out of context from here and there all over the Gospels. But then, this is the stock-in-trade of many fundamentalist "Christians," who, incidentally, get their sobriquet "fundamentalist" from the contention that the Bible must not be interpreted, it must be taken literally, word for word. They make their own patchwork quilt version of "Christianity," and it bears no resemblance to what a simple, straightforward reading of the Bible (reading it like straight through, like a novel, not pecking here and there like a nervous chicken) shows Christianity to be. Bizarro!!!

Several months (perhaps as long as a year) ago, Rev. Barbara R. Rossing spoke to an adult forum at a church that I frequently attend. Rev. Rossing is a theologian who teaches at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, and is the author of several books. One of these is entitled The Rapture Exposed. She wanted to title it The Rapture Racket, but that made her publisher nervous. Anyway, here is a link to the book [Blicky]. Scroll down for an editorial review followed by reader reviews. Rev. Rossing is a very intelligent and articulate person, and she finds that Jesus' message of unconditional love doesn't exactly square with the image of his waving a hand and causing people to split open and dump their guts on the ground.

As you can see, the book didn't go over too well with some folks, which, of course, was to be expected. Electric preachers like Jack Van Impe, et al who trade in raving about the "Rapture" and gloating about how people they don't like will get their come-uppance when Jesus returns waving his flaming sword, had a shit-hemorrhage over the book and devoted much TV and internet time to condemning Barbara Rossing to The Pit.

What's really distressing is how many people buy and read this "Left Behind" series of books and believe that "Rapture" crapola. And what's worse, their idea of what being a Christian is all about.

The Dark Ages are still about, it would seem.

Marty, you just didn't get it. Since one of our fearless leaders, the beloved Dick Cheney, made use of the f-word on the Senate floor, I thought I would try it on for size in what I deemed to be an appropriate context. But being the cultured and refined person that I am, I found that it didn't fit me at all. You, obviously! Cheney, apparently. Me—no. So I merely rephrased my statement in a manner that reflects the gentleman that I truly am.

I'm sorry if you had difficulty with the word "consideration." I forgot that it has five syllables, and that, for your benefit, I need to limit my vocabulary to words of two syllables or fewer.

Now, as far as the impression you have that I "cracked and snapped," that was only my aging back (I thought I'd be generous and throw you that little sop, since you take such delight in your misconception that I'm some sort of crumbling antique). Well, could be. He worked his way up the chain of evolution and finally got promoted to human, first as a Spartan soldier. He comported himself honorably, and after several more incarnations, he was (he claims) the Venerable Bede. There were several more incarnations in which he was fairly obscure (no one of historical significance, except in small ways), then, he says he shot into prominence once again as Voltaire. As the result of something that happened in a later incarnation (which he didn't want to talk about) he picked up a load of bad karma and got demoted to the rank of field mouse. He got nailed young by a barn owl, and since that worked off a lot of the karma, he next manifested himself as Cyril the raccoon. He has since moved on and been promoted a couple more times, but he didn't say to what. If he was Sammy the Skunk, that end should have worked off a lot of the bad karma and he may even be back to human by now. Since it was his soul I was channeling, I don't really know the nature of his present status. Anything is possible, I guess.

Fortunately your matings of this sort don't provide offspring, otherwise there would be some real chimeras running around your area (Wait just a damn minute! Maybe that explains a lot!).

And as far as Cyril scrawling stuff on walls is concerned, that's a vile slander on your part. Use you head for some besides a device to keep your ears from clattering together, Marty (Hark! Do I hear castanets?). Cyril may be an old and wise soul, but he has to accept the limitations of whatever body he inhabits at a given time. And he's a raccoon, for Chrissake! Raccoons have prehensile forepaws, but they lack the motor skills to handle a pen or pencil.

You had best be cognizant of the karma you're building up, lest you return as a paramecium. And it would be real hell to be something you can't even pronounce.

The idea of the "rapture" is not in the bible. It's a concept introduced in the 1800's by a Calvinistic John Darby. It's the basis for the present evangelical fundamentalist movement that has
spread the misinformation that the US is a Christian nation, that Jesus is coming back twice and all that don't profess an adoration for him will go to hell. These "dispensationalist Darbyites" have found their way into American politics and their view is toxic. It threatens the well-known part of the Constitution that says "congress shall make no longs respecting the establishment of religion". This idea of fundamenalism is expressed by "Left Behind" novels of LeHaye and the machinations of Falwell, Robertson and W. Bush.

Read a book called "The Rapture Exposed" by Barbara Rossing for some valuable information.

Frank, I've heard Barbara Rossing speak and met her when she was in Seattle some time back. A most interesting woman. I mention her book in a post above, 20 Jul 04 - 04:36 PM. THIS should take you right to it.

Unless you do... :-)

Look, people make up the rules as they go along. Everybody does that. Then they insist that "it's always been that way", and they kill people who don't agree with them. Or they get killed by those people.

It's all really very silly.

Interesting that this ridiculous thread is back.

What's even more interesting is that if you do a Google search on Don Firth, this thread is what comes up.

It is there for all of the world to see what he is most famous for!

I can live with that!

So can I. When I leave this website, there is no further Martin Gibson, so I don't really care in the slightest.

Somebody does See Don Firth, as a real person in a website doing battle with unknown guests and made up names wasting his time and energy. What a wonderful legacy that is. Worth laughing at, really.

Don't come to Basingstoke, Martin, or I will smack your face!

I am now ensconsed wif me sister, Gladys, and we are discussin' wot a stupid, useless git I married when I walked up the isle wif Eddie Whatnoll! I must 'ave been out of me mind. 'E and 'is bloody parrot can rot in Bath till 'ell freezes over. 'E's fat, lazy, and full of 'isself, and so is the parrot. Full of 'isself, I mean...the parrot, that is. The parrot is not fat nor lazy. It's 'yperactive in fact.

Gladys and me are plannin' to launch a new business wot will make Eddie wish 'e'd got off 'is duff and done somefink wif 'is life. 'E'll be green wif envy. The parrot already is green, but it ain't envy. It's just the natchural colour of the ugly blighter.

No, Guest, you are the sickest because you are schizoid as a regular poster who has no testicles.

Actually I was doing a search on filth and how to clean it off a shirt and Firth popped up.

And Mrs. Olive whatnoll, I wouldn't dream of coming to Basingstoke because I would rather go to some place in America where they speak and write real English.

I'm gratified that you plan not to visit Basingstoke, Martin Gibson. We don't want your kind 'ere, that's for sure. We've got enough unpleasent yobs as it is. You wouldn't even be down out of the trees if it was not for England, boyo! We gave you civilizytion, tea, and crumpets, and the English language and you dumped it all in Boston 'Arbour. You make up stupid words like "bodaceous" and "hellacious" wot ain't real words. You're a sorry lot. You don't deserve to be in the Empire, irregardless of what that idiot Tony Blair finks, and I'm not talkin' about the bloomin' parrot neither! If you didn't 'ave a lot of money wot was took out of the pockets of 'ard workin' English people wot stood alone and defended 'umanity from the Jerries TWICE whilst you lot cashed in on the sidelines and exploited your bet'ters for a quick dollar, well, then...

Where was I? Well, wot I'm sayin', to put it simple is...sod off! Basingstoke can live fine wifout the likes of you.

People on Mudcat seem to eventually find a certain level and perhaps you should look at where you would like yours to be. Best wishes.

Boys, boys, boys:
There is a true sign of the impending apocalypse: It is possible that the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs could face other in the World Series, which means ONE OF THEM MAY WIN!!!
(For non-North Americans, this refers to baseball. The Red Sox last won the World Series in 1918, the Cubs in 1908.)
