I'm a newbie guitar stummer and everytime I hear this song I start stompin' my foot. My ear isn't "trained" enough I guess to figure it out. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

The only version of this song I ever heard was by the great Fields Ward; don't remember if it was on his Biograph LP from the 60s or the Rounder from the 70s. I haven't heard it or played it in 20 years, but to the best of my memory his chord arrangement is this (key C:

(C) Riley and Spencer, burnin' down
Lord there (G7) ain't no liquor in this (C) town
Lord there (G7) ain't no liquor in this (C) town.

The picking is more intricate but I think that is the structure.

Or using the 'new' Mudcat Draft Standard for submitting chords, it would look like this:

[C]Riley and Spencer, burnin' down
Lord there [G7]ain't no liquor in this [C]town
Lord there [G7]ain't no liquor in this [C]town.

In this case the diffrences are:

- Square [] brackets instead of ().
- No space after the right square bracket ] and the following syllable of the lyrics.

This is a few years later, but for anyone of late who is interested, I learned this song in the minor key and believe that is the original way of playing it. So it would be Cm and G.

I was just working through the melody and noticed it also has a B flat as well as the flattened third, which is real interesting. Modally speaking that would make this song C locrian.
