Subject: Lyr Req: Airborne Ranger Song (US Army 82nd)
From: Rabbi-Sol
Date: 11 Jul 04 - 12:44 AM

My cousin was an officer in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne division (paratroopers), and was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. When he would come home on leave, he would sing the theme song of the division. I only remember 2 lines of the song which are as follows.

I want to be an airborne ranger
I want to live with death and danger

Can anyone supply me with the lyrics to the entire song.

Hi, Sol - This Google Search will take you to a variety of versions. At Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, we marched to:

I wanna be an Airborne Ranger
I wanna live a life of danger
I wanna go to Viet Nam
I wanna kill old Charlie Kong.

I tried to avoid that last line, mouthing the words without saying anything. I didn't like the rest of it much, either.

This version is pretty good:
2 Old Cronies lying in the bed
One rolled over to the other and said:
I want to be a paramedic
    Use that funky anasthetic
    Paramedic/Anaesthetic
I want to be a scuba diver
Jump right in that muddy water
    Scuba diver/ muddy water
I want to be a mountain climber
Climb that mountain higher and higher
    Mountain climber/ higher and higher
I want to be an airborne ranger
Live a life of guts and danger
    Airborne Ranger/ guts and danger
I want to be in color guard
Live a life that's not so hard
    Color guard/ not so hard
This one and lots of others here (click).

Thanks Joe. My cousin was smart. He became an officer and attained the rank of Captain. He got all the education the Army could give him and then, when he saw Viet Nam coming, he got out in a hurry. SOL ZELLER

I wanna live a life of danger
I wanna do just what I oughta
I wanna rape [sleep with, f*ck] the colonel's daughter
or
I wanna kill and rape and slaugher.

And so on. I don't remember more of it, thank goodness.

At Fort Jackson, South Carolina, we sang the second line as, "Livin' on blood and guts and danger."

After basic I spent a year as company clerk in the same unit in which I'd originally trained, and never met a single soul who took the song seriously.

Were there military units that actually sang cadence chants that extolled rape? I objected to many of the chants we had to sing in basic training, but none of them were that bad. I consider myself lucky - after basic training, I went to the Defense Language Institute, and the only songs we sang were in German.

This is one of many cadence chants, aka "jodies," used to keep time while marching. I seem to recall a long and informative Mudcat thread on this topic about a year ago -- maybe a search on the forum for "Jody" or "jodies" would help find it. (The mythical character Jody, who was making time with your girlfriend while you were drilling in the Army, was the subject of many of these ditties.)

I went through basic training at the very end of 1972, just before the draft was abolished on Jan 1, '73. Few, if any, of us in that training company were destined for the 82d or any other Airborne outfit, but since our drill sergeant had served in 'Nam as an Airborne Ranger, we sang every day that "I wanna live a life of danger." I can remember only fragments of the many verses we sang -- something about "If I die in a combat zone / Bag me up and send me home" ... not a pleasant thought at all!
Thanks for the reminder - I added this thread to the Jody/Cadence group.

Oh how I remember double-timing to this song during Basic Training early morning runs! Man, I miss those days...then maybe not!

The verses we sang were risque. You could not sing those now in today's "VOLAR" Army. Back then it was referred to "This Man's Army" My, how things have changed.

One of my favorite slow march cadence songs we sang was: AAAmen, AAAmen, AAmen, Amen, Amen....Listen soldier, AAAmen.. This was a variation of the Impressions song from the mid 1960s.

Then of course there was: your lady was home when you left, your right!...Sound off 1..2 Sound off 3..4 Sound off 1234...

Ah, those were the days! (or maybe not)

Cadence chants for sure

I like fighting I like danger
I want to be an airborne ranger
I like loving women more
Put my ass in the finance corps.

and

If I die on the old drop zone
Box me up and ship me home
Cross my arms across my chest
Bury me in the front leaning rest,
(last line alternative)
Tell my girl I did my best.

As one of us had noted these song/cadences were more often used in the pre PC Army. In the early 60's our Drill Sgt would frequently get braced by the First Sergeant for singing rude cadences near family housing. Since there was some sort of family housing everywhere we marched, it cut his choice of lyrics by quite a bit. Some of this material may be on Lydia Fish's site at NY State University at Buffalo, or may be in the (Col)Lansdale works now in the Library of Congress.

Glad I saw this thread. For the longest time I have been thinking of inquiring about a song (to the tune of The Man on the Flying Trapeze). Sometime around 1950 my mother shared a typed copy of several stanzas which I promptly, in my careless kid way, lost. The only thing I remember is the start of the chorus;
"Once I was infantry now I'm airborne,
Riding in gliders all tattered and torn"
That's it. Any oldsters w/ WWII memories can help?---John

Does anyone know the lyrics to: YOU CAN TELL AN AIRBORNE RANGER.
I know its like... glorious, victorious.....
and it goes on to say... you can tell an airborne ranger by his boots...you can tell an airborne ranger by his boots...because they're as shiney as glass and they kick a lot of ass..you can tell an airborne ranger by his boots.
YCTAABR by his ruck YCTAABR by his ruck because its as big a truck and its as heavy as fu*k, YCTAABR...by his ruck...

I know it goes on to say about his wife and other things. and my boyfriend who is currently in ft. benning, georgia at ranger school sang it and it plays in my mind at least once daily and i would like to know the lyrics. so if you can help me out i would appreciate it.
thanks

I remember trotting through the sand of the training area at CFB Borden in central Ontario, singing:

I wanna be an Airborne ranger
Live that life of thrills and danger.
If you've got a low IQ
Then you can join the Airborne, too!

Of course, the Canadian Forces had an Airborne Regiment but no rangers. Now we don't have the Airborne either, but that's quite another pair of sleeves.

I know an Army Ranger cadence. I think it's for 11b Infantry.

"Rangers
All the way
Here we go
Here we go
C130 rollin' down the strip
Airborne daddy gonna take a little trip
Mission unspoken destination unknown
Don't even know if we're ever coming home
Stand up hook up shuffle to the door
Jump right out and count to four
If my main don't open wide
I've got a reserve by my side
And if that one should fail me too
Look out ground I'm coming through
And if I die on the old drop zone
Box me up and ship me home
Tell my girl I did my best
Bury me in the lean and rest
And when I get heaven
St. Peter's gonna say
How did your livin'
How'd you earn your pay?
I will reply with a whole lot of anger
Earned my pay as an Airborne Ranger
Driving on
All day
11B
Infantry
Rannnnggerrs
Rannnggers
Rangers
Gotta go now
Rannggerr
All the way now
RAANNNGGERRR
Common!"

There was someone back in septembers posts requesting these lyrics...
Glorious, victorious,
Hey, one keg of beer
For the 4 of us
Glory be to God
That there are no more of us
Cause one of us could drink it all alone
damn near
pass the beer
to the rear

Here's one version of the song Guest remarked about.

    Dave

One Day I answered the popular call
And got in the Army to be on the ball.
An infantry outfit, foot-soldiers and all,
Is where they put me to train.

They gave me basics at Camp Clairborne,
There I was happy and never forlorn,
Till they split us up and made us Airborne,
But the pay was exactly the same!

Chorus:

Once I was happy but now I'm Airborne,
Riding in gliders all tattered and torn.
The pilots are daring, all caution they scorn,
And the pay is exactly the same!

Other variations:

Once I was Infantry, now I'm a dope,
Riding in gliders attached to a rope.
Safety in landing is only a hope,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We fly through the air in our flying caboose,
Its actions are graceful just like a fat goose.
We hike on the pavement till our joints have come loose,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We fight in fatigues, no fancy jump suits,
No bright leather jackets, no polished jump boots.
We crash-land by glider without parachutes,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We glide through the air with "Jennie" the jeep,
Held on our laps unable to leap.
If she breaks loose our widows will weep,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We glide through the air in a tactical state,
Jumping is useless, it always too late.
No chute for the soldier who rides in a crate,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We work in Headquarters we sit on a chair,
We figure our tactics and take to the air,
We fly over "Jerry" and drop in his hair,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We hike and we sweat, and we load and we lash,
We tie it down well, just in case of a crash,
We take off and land, and climb out in a flash,
And the pay is exactly the same!

We glide through the air with the greatest of ease,
We do a good job and we try hard to please.
The Finanace Department we pester and tease,
But the pay is exactly the same!

Risque? Here's some unexpurgated versions we sang at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in the Summer of 1963. They are NOT PC!

Bravo Company's a bunch of WACs
They've got Kotex in their packs.

(Very possible, since we used Kotex menstrual pads to pads our elbows and knees when crawling over the rocks of the infiltration course -- and not even God could help you if you were caught so padded!)

If I die on the Russian Front,
Bury me with a Russian cunt.

I don't know but I've been told
Eskimo pussy's mighty cold.

There are more -- they'll come to me.

Several airborne-related cadences may be found here. These are similar (with minor variances) to those I heard @ Ft. Dix, NJ and Huachuca, AZ in the late 80's.

Frankly, I'm surprised at how many of the melodies I still remember!

I first learned mine from Texas A and M students (NEVER heard even a cuss word from an C Springs Cadet they are officers from the start) The songs are still sun at A and M "Fish Camp" to get pumped for the school year and the right to cry hoooaaahhaaa. They are sung amongst the students not the brass.

"Flyin' low and feelin mean!
(Flyin' low and feelin mean!)
See that family by the stream!
(See that family by the stream!)
Drop some napalm, hear 'em scream!
(Drop some napalm, hear 'em scream!)
Cuz napalm sticks to kids!"

"Flyin my Cobra in the sun!
(Flyin my Cobra in the sun!)

Waxin' gook families just for fun! (Waxin' gook families just for fun!)
Pregnant bitch scores 'two for one'!
(Pregnant bitch scores 'two for one'!)
Cuz napalm sticks to kids!"

"Mama-san, Papa-san layin' in bed!
(Mama-san, Papa-san layin' in bed!)
Three gook babies layin by their head!
(Three gook babies layin by their head!)
Five quick bursts and they all lay dead!

Well C-130 rolling down the strip

[Did it again, didn't I?]

OK, now:

Joe--
If you learned some German ones, great. I think I posted this on another thread, but I came across one single couplet from an OLD German 'jody' that may date back to Bismarck. All I know is

Zicke, Zacke, jup hei die--
Schneidig is die infantrie.

(Ta-ra-ra boom-dee-ay! The infantry is snappy!}

Ever come across anything like that?

Gargoyle:

What year did you hear "Napalm Sticks to Kids" ?? In 1969-71 I was at the same fire base as the 222nd Aviation Co., "Tiger Sharks." They provided our air support, so we were semi-frequent guests in each other's clubs. A number of their pilots collectively wrote "NSK", and I need to add that it was as a means of venting ambivalent feelings about what they were doing. Somewhere I have a wrinkled mimeograph copy. The only other reference to it I've ever seen was a thread, possibly right here on dear old Mudcat, by a bunch of well-intentioned idealists who didn't know what the hell they were talking about. BTW, that was never to my knowledge used as a cadence.

Back to "I wanna be an airborne Ranger...." There are running cadences and there are marching cadences and there are songs you sing while being trucked somewhere. The break-down depends on the length of the phrases, as you take shorter breaths running ("shuffling") than you do marching. I would venture to guess that the reason nobody can come up with more lyrics is that after that first couplet,
"I wanna be ...; I wanna live," it dropped back into some very short, trivial phrases, like:

(Each line echoed)

I wanna be an airborne Ranger.
I wanna live a life of danger.
Here we go!
Up the hill!
Down the hill!
How far?
All the way!

just so everybody breathed out for two steps and in for two steps.

A number of the lyrics posted above were common marching cadences, true, but I don't remember ever leading into them with this couplet.

I learned German drinking songs, Charlie - mostly from a priest in Milwaukee who taught us second-year high school German. No jodies. There were French, British, and American soldiers in West Berlin when I was stationed there in 1972-73, but no German soldiers and no German Jodies.

One we did as ROTC cadets - back in the mid-1960s, when nobody was going into the Finance Corps:

I wanna be an Airborne Ranger -- Finance!
I wanna live a life of danger -- Finance!
I wanna play with the Army's money -- Finance!
I wanna be a rich lieutenant -- Finance!

Funny, ha! ha!

When I was going thru Officer Basic at Benning I roomed with a Finance officer. But we were Regular Army, so back then, anyway, he had to do two years in the Infantry for some real world exposure. We caught up to each other again in the Nam. The last time I saw Dave, he was being medevaced, eventually headed to Walter Reed so the knee that had just been mangled by an AK-47 round could be reconstructed.

The brighter side of this is that while we were at Benning, the brass decided they didn't have enough statues and wanted another one in the pose of the half-tone photograph on a lot of period training manuals, "Follow Me!" You know, the grunt with fixed bayonet and one arm up in a great, "Wagons, Yo!" gesture. They lined a bunch of us up (certainly not me) and, well, Dave was ruggedly handsome, as a matter of fact, so they made him pose for a zillion pix that the sculptor could work from, and there you go. A bona fide I-was-there story about how a statue embodying the perfect gung-ho Infantry small unit leader (71542) is really a Finance dude.

Which proves once again that Churchill was right: "Appearances are only appearances, but a good cigar is a smoke."

Chicken Charlie
Sorry, no jodies, but I'm fresh out.
Excuse thread creep, like this is the first time it ever happened:)

Hey I've trying to remember the all of the lyrics to "the airborne ranger crosses the line taboo, taboo" but I got stuck. I'll post the rest for eveyone's amusement, but I would really appreciate it if someone could help me finish.

the airborne ranger crosses the line taboo, taboo
the airborne ranger crosses the line taboo, taboo
the airborne ranger crosses the line (SHOUT) he fucked all the women and drank all the wine! taboo, taboo, tab all you, tab all you taboo

he came upon a wayside inn taboo, taboo (repeat just like the first line)
he opened the door and walked right in! taboo, taboo, tab all you tab all you taboo

(same pattern)the inn keeper her had a daughter
with milky white breasts and a cunt like a gutter!

(same pattern) he tied her to the head of the bed
he fucked her til she was nearly dead!

the song goes on to talk about how the inn keeper kills the ranger with his shotgun and how the ranger goes to heaven, but I forget exactly how. if anyone remembers they should post it. or maybe i am breaking the ranger code of secrecy by revealing secret songs to non-scrolled bitches! Go to batt and be real ranger...argh!

These are really interesting. In the British Army we didn't sing at all when running/marching. I remember during a 10 mile run th PTI asked the Captain if we could sing something to keep morale up (it was supposed to be a 2 mile run and the captain got other ideas). "Corporal, we're not fucking Americans!"

I was at the 75th Ranger Regiment for three years and we never sang cadence for runs or marches.

I was wondering if anyone on here ever came across a guy named Vance Austin, he was born in Canada but moved to America and became a Ranger, not sure what division. I met him after he became a teacher, he was probably the best teacher I had and very smart, he was a Col. and has a PhD now, you can find him on google. I also know some cadences but they are very similar to most of the above ones, except "Deep in the battlefield lying in the mud" which I could remember if running, but I don't know if I could focus well enough to type the lyrics.

First off, real rangers recycle and real rangers don't sing those faggity airborn ranger songs!, except for the gutter ones like "The Airborne Ranger crossed the Rhine", "Glorious Victorious", "Ralph the Airborne Ranger, or "World, World Twist and Twirl" lol

"world world twist and twirl- chink ta chink ta chink!
how i love those little girls- chink ta chink ta chink!
15, 14 even younger how they satisfy my hunger-chink ta chink ta chink! ...etc"

"You can tell an Airborne Ranger (AR) by beret x2
cuz its shaved and its neat like the pussy that he eats, you can tell an AR by his beret, by his beret!
Singing glorious, victorious...etc
You can tell an AR by is cock x2
cuz its long and its thick and its always in a chick, you can tell an AR by his cock, by his cock!
singing...
You can tell an AR by his wife x2
cuz she fucks like a stallion you can ask the whole battalion, you can tell an AR by his wife, by his wife!
singing...etc"

This is the theme song for the Trinity College Rowing Club.

I wawa be a papa ranger,
Living the life of sex and danger.
Scuba diving,
69ing.
Here comes the girl that i like best,
Many of times ive sucked her breasts.
Fucked her standing,
Fucked her lying.
If she had wings ide fuck here flying.
Now shes dead and in her coffin,
Dig her up and fuck her more often.
