Subject: Lyr Req: Bawdy Cab Calloway Song
From: John in Brisbane
Date: 11 Jul 04 - 04:36 AM

I raised a rather timid thread on this subject a few years ago having heard part of it from a Kiwi fisherman. It supposedly came from Calloway's early career in the early 30's and was not intended for sensitive White consumption. The Title is 'Loose Shoes, Tight Pussy and a Warm Place to Shit' - hence my guarded request in the first instance.

I've just stumled across the following in looking for some other early songs of his:

LOOSE SHOES (Key, 77) D/act Ira Miller, S Varley Smith, P Joel Chernoff
(COMING ATTRACTIONS) Fake trailers and ads (one is for pot) are featured in yet
another obscure, dated, anything goes comedy. Invasion of The Penis Snatchers,
Skateboarders From Hell (with Betty Thomas and Mark Volman), Billy Jerk Goes
To Hell (with Tom Baker and Billy Curtis) and Return to Bacon County (with Susan
Tyrrell and Ed Lauter) are some of the (overlong) trailers. In a western spoof
(starring Sid Haig!), the cowboys are gangsters and the Indians are from India
(one is Van Dyke Parks!). Bill Murray (same year as SNL debuted) stars in a prison
movie. It ends with an imitation 30s short with somebody as Cab Calloway singing
about being happy with a "tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit." Also
with Avery Schreiber (as a pot smoking ballerina in drag), Buddy Hackett, Howard
Hesseman, Kinky Friedman, Jaye P. Morgan, Misty Rowe, Bill Zuckert (same year
as KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE) and a Woody Allen imitator. Harry Shearer and Gary
Owens were narrators. It was backed by Mel Brooks.

If I read this correctly (it is a film description, isn't it?) then the song clearly does exist. The question is - was it written for this later movie or was it truly a Calloway original.

Any further light on this would be appreciated.

Regards, John

Sounds like they were doing a complete spoof of Calloway. I can't find anything about the song that doesn't primarily talk about the movie. It's out on DVD, and you can buy it at Amazon.com for $5 US (there's a used one for sale for $2.98 at the moment.) Perhaps it's available to rent, and perhaps there's more information in the credits.

I haven't looked for the song author, but I'd imagine it's not an original Cab Calloway song, but written specially for the movie (which from the few reviews I've seen wasn't good at all).

The movie seems to be available. If you look at the IMDb Entry for Loose Shoes (1980) - look at the link to Merchandising and you'll find links to videos.

Oh, and the words are available at: www.anna.is Song of the week - Loose Shoes. I don't normally copy songs from other sites to Mudcat, just post the link, but as this is listed as a "Song Of The Week" I'll make an exception. The words from there are below.

Mick

LOOSE SHOES

Well I woke up this afternoon and I felt that everything was pretty much okay
(That's good)
And I made love to my baby, in my usual way
(That's even better)
I tried to put on my shoes, they were too tight, they would not fit
Then I went to use the convenience and I almost froze my toes...

Here's how it goes....

A-one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight...

Now I'm returning my Nobel Peace Prize
All my Oscars crowd my Pulitzer Prize
Some folks look at my medals with greed
I just laugh at them all and say all I really need is, well....

Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
(That's it?)
That's it

Now I don't want a new Cadillac
And I don't care if I sit in the front or the back
You can keep your daughter unless she's real young
Cause those rumors are true and I'm really hung on what...

...boys...
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
(That's it?)
That's it

Now you won't find me in a watermelon patch
Out with the boys digging up some scratch
Just to buy some muggles well maybe some hash
And I'm not usually invited to the Republican bash...

..unless they got... Well you know...

Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit
(That's it?)
That's it

Tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shiiiiiiiiiiiiit

Hoo John,

You can't have heard grubby words like that from a Kiwi fisherman - they are all clean living. You heard it from Gerald Ford's 1976 US Presdential campaign,,, vis...

Earl Butz, the Ford administration's agriculture secretary, lasted a mere three days during the 1976 presidential election, killed by his October remark that all "coloreds want is a tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit." Found at...... Here's another link to Gerald Ford and the quote. Whoops, it seems singer Pat Boone was in on the conversation....

Guess Karl got kicked in the Butz

Adding "calloway" to my search didn't help any.. Mind you, that doesn't prove Cab wasn't involved in the original quote. A Kiwi fisherman wouldn'i tell lies - unless they could add to the yarn...;)

Cheers - Sam (NZ)

I should have mentioned that during my searching I did come across some golfing shoes called Cab Calloway Loose Shoes, so it is possible it goes back to him.

Thanks for that Sam!

I did come across the quotes predating the film, suggesting that the phrase at least was in use earlier, whether in song or not.I also checked the Heptune Calloway discography, but they don't list it; then again it's not complete, only "songs we know how to find" (or something like that). The ACE database lists only 2 songs called "Loose Shoes" but no performers are listed; it's not clear if either of them are the song intended.

(and the golf shoes were just an advertising scam using Calloway as a link I think).

Mick

The phrase sounds like a typical and probably widely-known racist comment, and the song sounds like a play on that-- hopefully in the movie the song is slanted to slam racism itself?

G'day ~S~,

I go along with you ---- Mind you, I hope the 'racists' have their day in Athens next month, without anyone else trying to get a BANG out of it. Wasn't it nice when racists tried to run faster than each other?

Doubtless the phrase goes way back. I first heard it from Blues man Memphis Slim back in the early sixties when he offered the advice that happiness was loose shoes and a tight pussy, he didn't mention the warm place, the fact that we were in mixed company may have been the reason.

It's been a few years since I started the search for this song, but I've finally tracked down a hire version at 'TRASH VIDEO' in West Ens in Brisbane - it has more titles in stock than the DT has songs. The doownloadable catalogue has about 10,000 movies incl Arthouse, Asian, Horror, Docos, Musicals and Horror. I even found a copy of 'The Mysterians', the first Japanese Sci-Fi I ever saw at a cinema (as a warm up to a Tarzan movie. trashvideo.com.au

99% of their stock is VHS PAL VCR videos: and I was going to throw mine out.

the origin of the key phrase came when Earl Butz, then Secretary of Agriculture made a racist remark to Pat Boone about why coloreds didn't vote Republican.
