Subject: Festivals/clubs to visit in UK?
From: yrlancslad
Date: 12 Jul 04 - 08:44 PM

Hi Mudcatters, I'm a Lancs Lad,domiciled in California and am coming home for a couple of months from 21st July to 22 sept. I do a radio show out here on British Isles and Irish music and sing myself-similar material plus Sea Songs.I visit about once every 2 years to pick up new Cds and artists for my show and to do the clubs and Festivals and usually prefer traditional material to contempory, though not always.
Can you guys suggest any good clubs and festivals I might go to for good up and coming artists and maybe get to sing a couple myself? I will be based inbetween Manchester and Liverpool ( Leigh) but have camping gear. I'm already going to the Folkworks Summer School(26th-31st July) Whitby Folk Week(21st-27th August) and Fylde (3rd- 5th Sept). Any other recomendations?
Thanks

Malcolm

If you are around the Market Rasen area in Lincolnshire at all, you could pop in to the Market Rasen Folk Club.

have a look at the website

There's always Cornwall Festival on August Bank holiday and , if you want a really good sing, try Wareham Wail on the first weekend in September.

What about the Broadstairs Festival from 6th to 13th August? It's a really good and friendly festival with something for everyone and excellent camping facilities.

I second the Broadstairs event. The "Shanties on the pier" are a must.

I'm sure you'll be very welcome in the Tap and Spile in Whitby thro the week

Try Saltburn FF which is the weekend before the weekend that Whitby FF starts, if you follow my drift, just up the coast a bit from Whitby

Some nice singarounds in the Conservative club, you must catch the Wilson family!! before you return

Bridgnorth (Aug 27-30) is a damn fine festival (no, I don't organise it!) Lots of singy opportunities, lots of venues, lots of pub sessions and I believe they have a showcase tent for people who aren't booked! www.bridgnorthfolkfest.co.uk

Yrlancslad

I strongly recommend Bromyard. 10th -13th September. Good campsite for your tent. Last year the weather was practically Californian and the town really welcomes the festival.

There are always excellent Sea Songs sessions, Jim Mageehan and Johny Collins guarantee that. Plenty of other sessions too.

Perfect way to round off your British summer before you head off back to the US.

See you there

Andrew

Broadstairs thirded.
Why not go the whole hog and do Sidmouth, Dartmoor, Broadstairs, a few days to recover then, Whitby & Bridgnorth. You'll get to see a good cross section of British folk and make loads of new friends.

Hi Malcolm, the Bothy in Southport will be closed for the Summer break from 18 July until 12 Sept. We usualy have an extra singers night during the break, just before we all go to Whitby, also there are our monthly sessions. Look at our Website for details.
Cheers
Les

The first weekend of Whitby Folk Week coincides with the wonderful Shanty Festival in Hull - Sea Fever. We'll be doing that and then going on to Whitby for the rest of the week. The afternoon singarounds are in Green Bricks and Minerva (where we'll likely be). If you're interested in Sea Songs you'll maybe want to give this event some serious thought.

yrlancslad is one of the guiding lights of the San Francisco bay area chantey scene. He has a great songbag. If you can fit him in your folk club or festival schedule, he's well worth it. Great guy, too.

Radriano here in San Francisco. Yrlancslad, we'll miss you!

By the way, could I get the lyrics to that nice version of "Billy Riley" that you do? I've been meaning to ask you but I keep getting these bouts of senior stassis...

Hey, where am I? What is this site? Holy garbanzo beans, it's happening again!

Hi Catters and thanks for all the good suggestions.I'll certainly visit Hull for the Sea festival and Broadstairs and the Wareham wail sound like goodies I haven't visited before, Saltburn too.... But where the hell is Wareham? Bridgnorth and Bromyard also sound good.
Ive been to Warwick a couple of times in the past but will probably be too jet-lagged to make it this time, I'll certainly be at the Seven Stars in Wigan, Caz, for the 40th Birthday, jet-lag or no.
Wigan, I'll see you at Whitby, I'm from Atherton actually (" bur ah'll bet ah con still eight as mony pies as thee" )and I'm really looking forward to seeing all my old friends from the northern clubs as well as making new ones.
Finally thanks to the guys who made flattering remarks about my singing and I'll send you "Billy Riley" by PM Radriano.
Thanks again everybody, next time I log on I'll be in the UK.
Tarrah Thisen

Malcolm - even though you were born on wrong side o t'Pennines I'm sure you'll have a good time in Hull at t'Shanty do. We'll maybe not be there on Sunday 'cos of Whitby Folk Week but we'll look out for you on t'Saturday.

If you don't fancy the concert on the Saturday night ask us about the 'Anti-Shanty' - the alternative evening's 'entertainment' for non-concert goers and miscellaneous drunks.

Malcolm

If you're in Whitby anyway, you'll find that Jim Mageean is running lunchtime singarounds with maritime themes in the Endeavour - collections go to the lifeboat rather than the festival.

Wareham is in Dorset, also by the sea. But the festival is unaccompanied singing in a field. I love it, and will be going, but it's the same weekend as Fylde!
