Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air/Danny Boy From: GUEST,# Date: 20 Aug 21 - 08:45 AM (Londonderry Air) CH4 729 - Colin Ferguson Hymn “Hear me, dear Lord” Hear me, dear Lord, in this my time of sorrow. For even if I turn from you today I need to know your love is there tomorrow and new hope still can lighten up my way. Forgive me, Lord, if in the tears of sadness my anger makes me take your name in vain, and life seems for a time to have no gladness, while I refuse to let you share my pain. Help me, my God, in the surrounding darkness, to hold by faith the gospel I have read, that, even in death’s unremitting starkness, the Son of Man has risen from the dead. So take my life that’s left with its misgivings; from grief and pain create in me anew a faith that finds in you a way of living, a love that offers all it has to you. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air/Danny Boy From: GUEST,henryp Date: 17 Aug 21 - 10:23 AM Frederic Weatherly wrote the song "Danny Boy" while living in Bath in 1910, but it did not meet with much success. In 1912 his sister-in-law Margaret Enright Weatherly in America suggested an old Irish tune called "Londonderry Air", which he had never heard before. Margaret had learned the tune from her Irish-born father Dennis. The tune matched his lyrics almost perfectly. He published the now-famous song in 1913. Wikipedia |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air/Danny Boy From: Little Robyn Date: 04 Sep 12 - 09:40 PM I knew I had it somewhere – just found it in my 1962 school songbook (NZ) and also in the GLB Hymnal (London 1961) – identical words, written by Frank Fletcher. O Son of Man O son of man, our hero strong and tender, Whose servants are the brave in all the earth, Our living sacrifice to thee we render, Who sharest all our sorrows, all our mirth. O feet so strong to climb the path of duty, O lips divine that taught the words of truth, Kind eyes that marked the lilies in their beauty, And hearts that kindled at the zeal of youth. Lover of children, boyhood's inspiration, Of all mankind the servant and the King, O lord of joy and hope and consolation, To Thee our fears and joys and hopes we bring. Not in our failures only and our sadness, We seek Thy presence, Comforter and Friend; O rich man's guest, be with us in our gladness, O poor man's mate, our lowliest tasks attend. Robyn |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air/Danny Boy From: GUEST Date: 04 Sep 12 - 05:20 PM I sang a different one once, which I was trying to find when I ran across this thread. It may be fairly recent. It starts "What tender arms, that bore away my savior, when he was lifted from Golgotha's tree." And in the chorus (the high note part) I recall, "What wondrous love, my heart can scarce contain it - the wondrous love that Jesus has for you and me." I wish I knew the name... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air/Danny Boy From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 12 - 04:41 PM The "I LOVE YOU SO" words I found in a church hymnal that was originaly a Non Instramental Chruch of Christ in the 70's. When we got new hymnals the old ones were given to the congregation to take home. The song was titled "MY SAVIOR DEAR". It has been one of my favorite hymms. I worked with a voice teacher to sing it acapella at nursing homes. Even for a saprano that high note can be a reach at times. I some how lost the book over the years with moving I suppose. I had sung it so much I thought I remembered all the words to 2 verses. But the words to the second verse never seemed right. I'm glad I found this site with even more songs to this melody. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air-Danny Boy From: Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Jun 08 - 07:33 PM Not a hymn, but to the same Londonderry Air: LONDONDERRY AIR (IN DERRY VALE) W.G.Rothery In Derry Vale, beside the singing river, So oft I strayed, ah, many years ago, And culled at morn the golden daffodillies That came with Spring to set the world aglow. Oh, Derry Vale, my thoughts are ever turning To your broad stream and fairy-circled lea, For your green isles my exiled heart is turning, So far awa-a-ay acro-oss the-e sea. In Derry Vale, amid the Foyle's dark waters, The salmon leap above the surging weir, The seabirds call – I still can hear them calling In night's long dreams of tho-o-ose so dear. Oh, tarrying years, fly faster, ever faster, I long to see the vale belov'd so well, I long to know that I am not forgotten, And there at ho-o-ome in pe-eace to-o dwell. May the Road Rise to meet you is a quotation from the Celtic blessing: Sarah Morgan of Craig Morgan and Robson has a lovely arrangement of this as "Keep you in peace". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air-Danny Boy From: Mo the caller Date: 12 Jun 06 - 03:29 AM I' ve been reading this thread thinking that, all though we sang the one posted first, there was another one too. It's come to me (not all the words though). We rest in Thee ..... .... We rest in Thee and in Thy name we go. Last verse We rest in Thee our shield and our defender Thine is the battle, thine shall be the praise When passing through the gates of pearly splendour Victors we rest with the through endless days. (last 2 lines repeated) There was a film called "Through Gates of Splendour" which used the hymn. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hymn to tune Londonderry Air-Danny Boy From: chazkratz Date: 11 Jun 06 - 06:47 PM Another hymn to the tune is "Above the Hills of Time the Cross Is Gleaming" It's in a hymnal called _Christian Worship_, as I recall, used in Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). All I could remember is the first, but a google search gave me another:: Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming, Fair as the sun when night has turned to day; And from it love's pure light is richly streaming, To cleanse the heart and banish sin away. To this dear cross the eyes of men are turning, Today as in the ages lost to sight; And for the love of Christ, men's hearts are yearning, As shipwrecked seamen yearn for morning light. The cross, O Christ, Thy wondrous love revealing, Awakes our hearts as with the light of morn, And pardon o'er our sinful spirits stealing, Tells us that we, in Thee, have been reborn. Like echoes to sweet temple bells replying Our hearts, O Lord, make answer to Thy love; And we will love Thee with a love undying, Till we are gathered to Thy home above. Another Google entry noted that the Naval Academy Catholic Choir sang the hymn during the White House part of John Kennedy's funeral service, before the procession moved on to the national cathedral. It was always one of my favorite hymns, even though I couldn't reach the high note--and I think there are at least two more verses. Charles |

Subject: Lyr Add: O SON OF GOD, OUR CAPTAIN OF SALVATION From: Lanfranc Date: 13 Jul 04 - 07:32 PM When I was at school in Brentwood, Essex UK, we sang this hymn to St Barnabas to the tune of Londonderry Air: O Son of God, our Captain of salvation, thyself by suffering schooled to human grief, we bless thee for thy sons of consolation, who follow in the steps of thee their Chief. Those whom thy Spirit's dread vocation severs to lead the vanguard of thy conquering host; whose toilsome years are spent in brave endeavours to bear thy saving Name from coast to coast. Those whose bright faith makes feeble hearts grow stronger, and sends fresh warriors to the great campaign, bids the lone convert feel estranged no longer, and wins the sundered to be one again; And all true helpers, patient, kind, and skillful, who shed thy light across our darkened earth, counsel the doubting, and restrain the willful, soothe the sick bed, and share the children's mirth. So Barnabas, the son of consolation who cast his all at thine apostles' feet; he whose new name, through every Christian nation, from age to age our thankful strains repeat. Thus, Lord, thy saint in holy memory keeping, still be thy Church's watchword, "Comfort ye," till in our Father's house shall end our weeping, and all our wants be satisfied in thee. Subject: ADD: I Love Thee So From: Kent Davis Date: 12 Jul 04 - 11:01 PM I Love Thee So words by Leonard A. Gordon, 1930 from the hymnal PRAISE FOR THE LORD My Savior dear, I love thee, O I love thee, For Thou hast made my blinded eyes to see, Redeemed by soul upon the cross of Calv'ry, And from the bonds of sin hath made me free. CHORUS I now am happy in Thy loving favor, I would that others this great love should know; I'll praise Thy name thro'out the endless ages, My Savior dear, my Savior dear, I love thee so. When stormy clouds of doubt and sin were raging, And I was tossed upon the sea of life, You whispered peace and every wave obeyed Thee, You gave me power to conquer every strife. CHORUS My Savior dear, how can I e'er repay Thee, For Thy great love and sacrifice for me? I feel, dear Lord, that I am so unworthy Of Thy atoning blood that made me free. CHORUS |
Subject: ADD: He Looked Beyond My Fault From: Nathan in Texas Date: 12 Jul 04 - 10:35 PM This one is by Dottie Rambo. He Looked Beyond My Fault Amazing Grace, shall always be my song of praise For it was grace that brought me liberty I do not know, just why He came to love me so He looked beyond my fault and saw my need I shall forever lift mine eyes to Calvary To view the cross, where Jesus died for me How marvelous, His grace that caught my falling soul He looked beyond my fault and saw my need |
Subject: ADD: I Cannot Tell (Fullerton) From: Marion Date: 12 Jul 04 - 10:18 PM Here's one that's in the Anglican hymnbook. It's by William Fullerton. I Cannot Tell I cannot tell why He Whom angels worship, Should set His love upon the sons of men, Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers, To bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that He was born of Mary When Bethlehem's manger was His only home, And that He lived at Nazareth and labored, And so the Savior, Savior of the world is come. I cannot tell how silently He suffered, As with His peace He graced this place of tears, Or how His heart upon the cross was broken, The crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, He heals the brokenhearted, And stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, And lifts the burden from the heavy laden, For yet the Savior, Savior of the world is here. I cannot tell how He will win the nations, How He will claim His earthly heritage, How satisfy the needs and aspirations Of East and West, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory, And He shall reap the harvest He has sown, And some glad day His sun shall shine in splendor When He the Savior, Savior of the world is known. I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, When, at His bidding, every storm is stilled, Or who can say how great the jubilation When all the hearts of men with love are filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, And myriad, myriad human voices sing, And earth to heaven, and heaven to earth, will answer: At last the Savior, Savior of the world is King! |
