I was unaware of the extensive use of "Danny Boy" as a hymn-tune - but it may go some way to explaining this amazing piece of music-making which I came across some years ago:

Frederic Weatherly wrote the song "Danny Boy" while living in Bath in 1910, but it did not meet with much success. In 1912 his sister-in-law Margaret Enright Weatherly in America suggested an old Irish tune called "Londonderry Air", which he had never heard before. Margaret had learned the tune from her Irish-born father Dennis. The tune matched his lyrics almost perfectly. He published the now-famous song in 1913. Wikipedia

I knew I had it somewhere – just found it in my 1962 school songbook (NZ) and also in the GLB Hymnal (London 1961) – identical words, written by Frank Fletcher.

O Son of Man

I sang a different one once, which I was trying to find when I ran across this thread. It may be fairly recent.

It starts "What tender arms, that bore away my savior, when he was lifted from Golgotha's tree."

And in the chorus (the high note part) I recall, "What wondrous love, my heart can scarce contain it - the wondrous love that Jesus has for you and me."

I wish I knew the name...

The "I LOVE YOU SO" words I found in a church hymnal that was originaly a Non Instramental Chruch of Christ in the 70's. When we got new hymnals the old ones were given to the congregation to take home. The song was titled "MY SAVIOR DEAR". It has been one of my favorite hymms. I worked with a voice teacher to sing it acapella at nursing homes. Even for a saprano that high note can be a reach at times. I some how lost the book over the years with moving I suppose. I had sung it so much I thought I remembered all the words to 2 verses. But the words to the second verse never seemed right. I'm glad I found this site with even more songs to this melody.

Another hymn to the tune is "Above the Hills of Time the Cross Is Gleaming"

It's in a hymnal called _Christian Worship_, as I recall, used in Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). All I could remember is the first, but a google search gave me another::

Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming,
Fair as the sun when night has turned to day;
And from it love's pure light is richly streaming,
To cleanse the heart and banish sin away.
To this dear cross the eyes of men are turning,

Another Google entry noted that the Naval Academy Catholic Choir sang the hymn during the White House part of John Kennedy's funeral service, before the procession moved on to the national cathedral.

It was always one of my favorite hymns, even though I couldn't reach the high note--and I think there are at least two more verses.

IanC, are you confusing Slane with "Air from Derry?" "Be Thou may Vision" and "Lord of all Hopefulness" are done to Slane in my experience.

I believe that Dottie Rambo one is somewhat widely sung. I've heard it by (white) southern gospel quartets (they love Dottie). And our own Jerry Rasmussen's gospel quartet sang it on a recent radio appearance.
