I just mentioned this on the JibJab thread...Arlo Guthrie was on Folk Roots/Folk Branches with Mike Regenstreif a few weeks ago and said the "This Land Is Your Land" parody was the best commentary on the election that he'd seen this year.

I've been asked to work on music for a Kerry rally in Sacramento. Unfortunately, I'll be at the Getaway the day of the rally, but I may work on preparation. I noticed, though, that they didn't request "This Land Is Your Land."

If it won't download, try another time. It took me 3 times before it would download..........and worth the wait! Ironic about the guthrie estate, considering that woodie said on one of his tunes, and i quote "This song is copyrighted in US under Seal of Cypright 154086, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin' it without our permission will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. The brothers who are JibJab were on TV today and said they are currently in negotiations with the Guthrie estate. No one was there to represent the Guthrie Estate, so we don't know all their reasonsing, but it is under the concept of parody which the Supreme Court has clearly stated falls under free speech.

Interesting note re: The Guthrie Estate. I don't know if this is true or not. However, there is a thing called Fair Usage---and parodies of original songs are exempt from needing clearance. I am assuming this is considered a parody.

That said, The Capitol Steps do this sort of thing all the time. A plug now for them and my radio program on WFDU http://www.wfdu.fm They will be my guest on TABLETALK on Sunday Aug. 16 at 8 A M (for you early birds) Eastern time. TABLETALK is only a 30 min. program as opposed to my other one--TRADITIONS on in the afternoon on SUndays. You will hear some great parodies with the Capitol Steps--they take on Dubya,The French, Hillary, and more.   As they said---vote for the funny and likeable people. It will be streaming on the web.


But--back to the JibJab parody. I finally was able to download it (fairly quickly)----just great. Great graphics, cartooning, and effects in addition to the wit. Laughed my head off---still trying to screw it back on---pardon the word "screw" for those aesthetics in the crowd. I could do without the ads---but I guess that is the price we pay ---which is fairer than having to sit through ads in movie houses where you have paid an admission fee.   And overpaid on the snacks.

Have you heard the latest? The creators of the video were on Good Day Live (out of L.A.) and have said that the publishers of This Land is Yuor Land (tied to the Woody Guthrie estate) are attempting to get them to stop providing it and a misuse of the original song.

Funny how things happen. An anti-establishemnt icon (Woody) writes a classic song about freedom and his descendants start trampling on the freedom to create parodies.

There's a song in there somewhere.

I cannot download "This Land Is Your Land" JibJab? I downloaded "Flash" from Macromedia thinking that would help. I get to the screen that has Bush and Kerry picture and saying "This Land" will download shortly - but then there is just a white box and that is it.
