Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Last Night in September From: Sooz Date: 16 Jul 04 - 06:58 AM Another great song, Dave - and a particularly good version on Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher's CD "Less Sprightly. More good news - Bill Meek is coming out of retirement to appear with John Conolly at Gainsborough Folk Festival. : 15th - 17 October 2004 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Last Night in September From: Dave Bryant Date: 16 Jul 04 - 05:38 AM Thanks Sooz - it's a lovely set of words. John and Bill have written so many wonderful songs that many people have never heard. "Angels of Lincoln" is another beauty - about the fact that mason who carved the stone angels around the cathedral used his own family for the models. |
Subject: Lyr Add: OUT OF SEASON (John Conolly) From: Sooz Date: 15 Jul 04 - 02:22 PM OUT OF SEASON John Conolly Last week in September and the nights are drawing down There's an end of summer feeling in the lazy seaport town And along the shadowed esplanade beside the quiet sand There's an out of season couple strolling hand in tired hand Let me wrap your coat about you love and draw your muffler tight For the breezes send a shiver down the esplanade tonight They remember days of summer with the sunlight's brassy glare And a million bursting roses shining through the perfumed air When the moon was made of honey and the night a secret friend And when love and time were new begun and seemed they'd never end And the sea is full of voices ringing clear and ringing bright As remembrance walks beside them down the esplanade tonight And they dream of building bungalows beside the singing sea But the summertime is over and the dream can never be And it may be out of season but the days are bright and clear When the old folks' outing brings them to the seaside once a year And the kindly moon is smiling with a friendly yellow light And there's still the scent of roses on the esplanade tonight |
Subject: RE: words wanted.Last night in September From: GUEST,Sooz (at work) Date: 15 Jul 04 - 11:41 AM I'll post the words when I get home. |
Subject: RE: words wanted.Last night in September From: Dave Bryant Date: 15 Jul 04 - 10:23 AM Get you geography right RtS - I know it's a long way from Bracknell, but Bill and John come from the other (south) bank of the Humber, namely the Grimsby/Cleethorpes area which is in Lincolnshire. 'Ull is in Yorkshire and quite a distance away via the Humber Bridge unless you've got a boat. BTW - There's details of the CD here. |
Subject: RE: words wanted.Last night in September From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 15 Jul 04 - 10:06 AM NOt more music from 'Ull, Dave?!! RtS |
Subject: RE: words wanted.Last night in September From: Dave Bryant Date: 15 Jul 04 - 10:00 AM I think you'll find it's a John Conolly song called "Out of Season" - it's on one of my (and Linda's) favourite (double) CDs "By Humber's Brown Water" which is a wonderful collection of songs by John Conolly and Bill Meek. If you like that song - get the CD - it's got over 40 songs all of which are great. |
Subject: RE: words wanted.Last night in September From: Ed. Date: 14 Jul 04 - 06:11 PM A bit more information as to when and where you heard it, and who sung it would be helpful.... |
Subject: words wanted.Last night in September From: kab Date: 14 Jul 04 - 06:00 PM I heard a song many years ago and this is what I think I remember: Last night in September and the nights are drawing down There's an out of season feeling in that little seaport town And along the shadowed esplanade beside the quiet sand an out of season couple walk hand in tired hand Chorus.Let me draw your coat about you love and draw your muffler tight the breezes send a shiver down the esplanade tonight if anyone can complete or extend the song I should be delighted and any details of who and when and where etc would be appreciated. Bless you all |
