Subject: RE: Chord Req: phil ochs- a year to go by From: M.Ted Date: 17 Jul 04 - 03:19 PM As a start, here are the lyrics. From Phil Ochs Homepage most songs have the chords posted as well, but not this one--I've never heard it, and don't have a recording of it---if the melody is a traditional or borrowed melody, let me know and I'll figure them out-- A Year to Go By By Phil Ochs Here I am 10 years have I Watch me run, watch me play, watch me cry Time has no time The world is mine And it takes 10 years for a year to go by Here I am Now 21 Learned all I need for a life that's just begun I know the rules Old men are fools And it takes 7 years For a year to be done Here I am Past 42 All that I know now if only then I knew Tricked by time Now I find That it takes just a year for a year to be through Here I am As old as old All sayings have been said All stories have been told Taught by time The greatest crime is to Live less than a year when a year has unrolled Less than a year when a year has unrolled |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: phil ochs- a year to go by From: M.Ted Date: 19 Jul 04 - 12:38 AM To access that link, I needed to join Yahoo, which I did, but then I needed to join the Phil Ochs discussion group, who, apparently, are fussy about who they let in. I have applied and my application is "pending"--depending on whether and when I am found worthy, I'll be back with chords-- |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: phil ochs- a year to go by From: M.Ted Date: 31 Jul 04 - 03:00 AM I finally got to listen to the music file--only thing is that it was obviously just an early demo of the song, and the chords are sloppy in some places(meaning that the accompaniment isn't really worked out yet)--Is this the only recording that there is? I could work out an arrangement, but it wouldn't necessarily be what Phil ended up with-- |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: phil ochs- a year to go by From: GUEST,Leigh Disney Date: 11 Aug 04 - 01:16 PM Helllo M. Ted, I don't know about whether Phil ever performed it in concert or anything, but as far as I know, the version of the song, you and Jim are discussing is the only version ever released. I don't think that Phil ever went back and worked out a more thorough arrangement, I think it's one of the many songs he recorded in the broadside offices, for possible inclusion in that magazine, some of which were rerecorded elsewhere, and some of which were released on the broadside tapes vol. one. They were going to release more (thus the title, vol. one, but Phils sister and/or brother, boycotted it so there are still several songs recorded for broadside which have never seen the light of day. Hope that all of this is helpful to someone. Leigh. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: phil ochs- a year to go by From: M.Ted Date: 11 Aug 04 - 08:31 PM Here are the chords, blocked out so you can play four counts to the measure--the first few times through, he is a bit unsure as to what chords to play on a tag that follows each verse, but he seems to settle on what I've put down (which is a lot like a vamp from the Everly Bros version of "Devoted to You"-- He plays an intro, which is simply the first two chords in the song, then starts the chord progression and begins singing on the F#m--I think that he really meant for the lyrics to start on the D, but was a bit behind because he was just walking through the tune-- (Intro) |D D/ F#m F#m| VERSE ||D D/ F#m F#m/D D/ F#m F#m/ D D/ Bm Bm/ Em Em /A7 A7/ GG/ F#m F#m/GG/ F#m F#m/ D D /Bm Bm//Em Em/A7 a7/ TAG ||G G /F#m F#m/Em Em/A7 A7| Here is the first verse, with the chords, to give an idea how it fits-- ||D D/ F#m F#m/ Here I am D D/ F#m F#m/ 10 years have I D D/ Bm Bm / Em Em / A7 A7/ Watch me run, watch me play, watch me cry GG/ F#m F#m/ Time has no time GG/ F#m F#m/ The world is mine D D /Bm Bm//Em Em/A7 a7/ And it takes 10 years for a year to go by ||G G /F#m F#m/Em Em/A7 A7| The TAG comes after the A7, and at the end of the last verse, he sings the last lines while playing the TAG, finally resolving it to a D chord-- Have fun-- |
