Subject: RE: How to tune horse head fiddle From: GUEST,Chazza Date: 02 Mar 11 - 02:24 AM Hey up, I'm learning the morin in Inner Mongolia and another alternative way to tune it is G for the low and C for the high string. I think as long as you keep a forth for the sake of fingering you can tune it as high or as low as you can. To Guest 30 Sep 10 - 09:29 AM "… hi there. anyone who knowas, where to buy the strings via web? Cant travel to mongolia :) " Here http://cgi.ebay.com/Morin-khuur-Horse-Head-Fiddle-STRINGS-cord-/220729344295 In the meantime you can make your own ones using fishing cord. My friend tried them and worked well, apparently. |

Subject: RE: How to tune horse head fiddle From: GUEST,PioMarine Date: 08 Jul 10 - 08:47 AM I just picked up my Morin Khuur in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia and after a short 30 min lesson learned that traditional tuning is all relative but typically F for the low string and Bb for the high one, so traditionally the morin khuur is tuned to a fourth. |
Subject: RE: How to tune horse head fiddle From: GUEST,Sam Date: 23 Jul 08 - 06:30 AM Hi folks, I started playing the morin khuur 3 years ago, by myself, helped with lot of CD listening, and a short stay in Mongolia. "Official concert" tuning is F (low string) and Eb (high one), so a fourth is Ok, but there are also alternate tunigs according to the purpose of the instrument (epic, throat singing) or the tribe. It can also be tuned to a fifth. A really great instrument to play, with lot of feelings. Best regards, SAM C=' |
Subject: RE: How to tune horse head fiddle From: Nemesis Date: 17 Sep 07 - 06:12 PM Fascinating stuff about the thrat singing - I have Yat Kha on CD .. grreat stuff (I love it, especially at Halloween when I rigged it up to play through the front door letter box at small children trick or treating .. Hey, Sorch .. you'll need to get into a three way tussle over it with both the son (a thrash metal fan) and the lover (an avante-guard jazzer) who both have their own mysterious musical reasons for claiming possession. Gawd, I hope that teach-yourself-Murin Khuur book turns up soon! So, is that a 'no' then? No one else playing one? Nem xx |

Subject: RE: How to tune horse head fiddle From: GUEST,Matt Date: 21 Dec 04 - 11:03 PM I think the contmporary tuning is G(right as you look at the front of the instrument) and C (left as you look at the front of the instrument). I thought the name was something like "Ma Tao Qin." I may have the spelling wrong and now that I think of it that is probably the Chinese name. Anyone? Matt |
Subject: RE: How to tune horse head fiddle From: GUEST,Gengis Khan Date: 13 Aug 04 - 02:26 AM Whan a bunch of useless advice. If you want a book about the morin khuur, check out this site. You can't order it from the site, but you might be able to persuade one of the site designers to buy you a copy in Ulaan Bataar and send it to you. Or just go there yourself. Mongolians are very nice people, but you don't want to disrespect them with stupid comments about their national instrument or you might be pulling arrows out of your ass. http://mongoluls.net/morinkhuur.shtml |
