Subject: BS: Quiz (untitled - deliberately)
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 18 Jul 04 - 03:54 PM

Another quiz, untitled this time. The first answer should give you the connection for the other 19!

As usual:
Please do not post answers in the thread

I will usually respond to PMs, and scores can be claimed in the thread. Answers should be available to 'transpondians', and clues for (nearly) all answers can be found Here if you're getting stuck.

Finally my usual caveat liberties may have been taken with spellings & pronunciation

17, I think - without even being a Pom. Had a little help from the map.

Re: No. 3 - just how early do you mean? There are several answers unless you stipulate just how early. Are we talking Cro-Magnon here or Australapithicus?

You are doing better than me Liz. Given the opening comment about the answer to q1 giving a clue to the rest, I can only get 1 answer to q3.

I think I've got 19/20. Don't know the Coronation St one without looking it up.

My first solution (to 17: Bonny lass of.....)) brought me on the wrong track: I thought we had to find song titles. Now I know we don't have. I'm confident I have 6-7 without googling. I doubt I could get any more.

I got an all-time record of 18 (for me), before I go peek.

I once was a horsey person, so #1 was fast. (More like large and hairy, and a nice dappled grey.) Once had a competition with a friend to see who could name the most types of equines. Got into the hundreds, and started coming up with things like "eohippus, mesohippus, yada, yada". But I digress. Heading off to check my answers.

Oops - can't check my answers yet. Maybe I could work on the missing two and PM them to Nigel. I wonder how the quiz went over at the club.

From PM'd answers we have
Vectis & Bagpuss on 20
Nemesis on 18
Giok & HuwG on 17
and Jacqui.C on 15

And yes there was one score of 20 (and can 'a score' be anything else?) at the club.

In case it's causing any one else problems #1 does not follow the theme. It sets it!

OT and can't remember if I posted this to another thread (several problems my end preventing a search) but, Jeri, if you like the bigger horses, you would probably enjoy the place near us that sorcha visited when she had a couple of days here. Various breeds of large working - let's call them dray pulling horses and also some small horses there. Seeing one of the big ones next to a Shetland is quite a contrast! Seeing the ease for example that one big horse can pull away with a cart full of kids - sort of like maybe a couple of ton does not exist - is at least to me enjoyable to watch - plus you get the feeling these horses enjoy thier tasks.

"was originated"? Cockermouth? Rubbish grammar, and unconvincing story Nigel.

Number 10 speaks about male cattle. If the solution I have in mind is the correct one, I guess the "male" is a bit misleading... ;-)

Greg: o.k. the 'was' was superfluous.

Mudguard: yes, I was writing the quiz without checking myself. I assumed that the word I was looking for was masculine (heaven knows why!) but my dictionary does give it as either, but 'esp. a castrated male of the species' and that was probably at the back of my mind. (good excuse heh!)

Cheers

Rapaire:

I missed your comment last time through. Good clue to the theme. Is this why Tolkien described Hobbits as having large hairy feet?

In years to come will the description of the horses be thought of as a back-formation from 'Hobbitland'?

Martin, you could give yourself a diary note to check oce a month (with a search of 30 days) for 'Quiz' as I always put it in the thread title.

Cheers

Nigel
