OK, I need this place again; the old one was getting longish and I want to set a new focus.

As usual, if you want to duel, take it outside.

I have been listening to this one song on a Hank Cramer tape over and over until I know all the words. I'll get the tape out of my car later and post the composer (and title).

I am gone (I am gone) I'm rollin' down this lonely highway through Montana

I am sad I have to go, but if I stayed there any more

I'd have lost it all for sure

that's a price I can't afford

So I'm leavin'

(It's) my old town

those are the friend I love so well We'd gather 'round

In a tavern by the bay

We'd raise out voice in song, Roll that Cahhriot Along

Then stumble home like sailors 'break of day.

(chord shift)

Sing all night - with - the Shantyman and a Bottle of Rum

Stomp your feet to the rumble and the thunder of the bodhran drum

Sing all night - to - the magic of the Girl With a Fiddle in her Hand

But head on home - 'fore you give your heart away...

I am gone ...

great song. very catchy and a great beat.

It puts me in mind of two cross country moves necessitated by jobs, and leaving Chicago, which I still miss.

anybody else got a great song circle type song?

sorry - I've been trying to get a shawl completed so I can start another one...

don't have much in the way of song circle type tapes - but I "time shifted a few songs the other day to make a CD that combines listening pleasure with songs I want to learn -- so my driving is currently accompianied by the Johnson Girls and Alaska Mike - with a wee bit of the Pyrates Royale thorwn in for the heck of it.

Down among the Dead men, down among the Dead men!
Down

    down

          down

               down!

Yeah, that one is on the Mudcat series. I was taken by it, too.

Here' one from the UU hymnal:

Come sing a song with me

Come sing a song   with me

Come sing a song with me

That I might know your mind

And I'll bring you hope, when Hope is hard to find

And I'll bring (de dum de dum)

And a rose in the wintertime

Come drea a dream with me

Great group song.

I've been listening to Black Walnut's CD, and want to throw in, as my contribution, my rendition of one I m in the process of stealing from it - Chatting with the Angels.

Not enough Gospel round here sometimes....

Now hook up the IV gin and let me go to sleep in a corner please?!

I've been making some up for my grandson when it's sleepytime. One seems to have struck as he likes a very simple, repeated sort of chant:

Morgan, Morgan, Morgan Aurele
Listen to my song
Morgan, Morgan, Morgan Aurele
Bedtime's (naptime's/nighttime's) come along.

Oh good, Dani; someone else who knows that one.

Do we have enought voices to sing the round "Great Tom is cast" in 6 parts??

Yes, I love that line, 'that I might know your mind'.

Can you start "Great Tom" and give us the words? I don't know it, but love rounds.

Dani

Great Tom is cast; and Christ Church bells ring 1, 2345 - 6, and Tom is last.

One part per measure. It's in the bible of a pink rounds book.

MAG, does that Hank Cramer tape have his version of "Rollin' Down to Old Maui" on it? I can't remember the verse he added, about rolling under the tropical fronds with the nut-brown maids.

There are a couple of shanties, but not that one.

the tape is *North by Northwest* and includes:

"Liverpool Judies"

"Pay me my money down"

"Santy Anno" (sic)

and as soon as I find the box (hah), I'll give you the composer of
"I am Gone"

which is the reason I love it so much.

I am sitting here feeling sorry for myself because I looked forward to catching the national edition of WFMT's "Midnight Special," and the link I usually use is down.

Now I gotta go look at the affiliate list and see if there is another time (grumble grumble) and maybe go shovel this pit of a house I sort of own, instead of ... well ... blowing time online??

Oh, I know it (Maui); we used to sing it at the monthly sings I went to in Chicago.

I have heard that nut-brown maids verse, but it is not one I normally sing. I'm sure I have it on a yellowing song sheet somewhere. Probably won't get it dug out tonight.

Silly me; I never thought to check there for the verse he wants.

It is hot as blazes here; hit a hundred again today. But it is a DRY heat.

Who knows this old Nat King Cole song?

The buzzard took the monkey for a ride up in the air

The monkey thought that everyting was on the square

Buzzard tried to flip the monkey off his back

Monkey grabbed him by the neck, said, Listen Jack

Straighten up and fly right (3x)

Cool down poppa don;t you blow your top.

Storytellers were sure glad to get ahold of this one, known in our world as "Cool ride in the sky."

Bed. Now.

Hi, folks!

I was surfing Mudcat and was utterly flattered to find y'all mentioning a couple of songs I do. "I Am Gone", which MAG mentioned, was written behind the wheel of my car back in 1992 as I drove toward Denver the day after a GREAT sea-shanty session at a tavern in Ruston (Tacoma suburb), WA. The shantyman, the bodhran drummer, and fiddler were (are!) real characters in the local shanty scene.

The "nut-brown maid" verse to "Rollin Down to Old Maui"? Gosh, it's been a long time, and there are SO many verses to that song that I actually rotate them ( I guess the way business executives rotate their silk ties, or the way Neil Young rotates his guitars...)

If I recollect right, the verse MIGHT be:

"Through every storm and winter gale we brought her safely through
Now we'll heave the lead where Diamond Head looms up on old Wahoo (Oahu)
We'll go ashore, we'll have our fun, and paint Lahaina red
And wake up in the arms of a nut-brown maid, with a big, fat achin' head!"

Good talking with you--

Hank Cramer

No, that's NOT it, it's supposed to mention fronds or such. Mmmmm...maybe--

Treacherous ice and winter gales, we've left them far astern
And the native maids in their island glades is a-waiting our return
Even now their big black eyes look out hoping one fine day to see
Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales
Rollin' down to old Maui!

Come, sing a song with me, (x3)
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:
And I'll bring you hope
When hope is hard to find,
and I'lll bring a song of love
and a rose in the winter time.

Come, dream a dream with me, (x3)
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Come, walk in rain with me, (x3)
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Come, share a rose with me, (x3)
That I might know your mind.
