When I lived in the Boston area in the 70's and early 80's - all the Pubs had large jars on the bar - "HELP THE CHILDREN OF NORTHERN IRELAND" sort-of fund raisers, continously being filled with folding money and coins ... rumor has it those jars funded more ammo then milk.

Cat Stevens's charities are suspected of the same sort of thing. I don't know if either is true - but I understand why US immigration folks look into those matters very carefully. I understand why they consider who is allowed in to visit our country, and under what circumstances.

His attorneys are looking into the matter? Maybe Cat Stevens can change their mind ...

One last thing and I'll shut up; when I first listened to Hard-Headed Woman I thought he was saying:

"I'm looking for a hard-headed woman, who'll make me do my bed..."

Always imagined a really tough babe: "Get back in that room and make your bed or you're not going out to play. I mean NOW! Put that guitar down when I'm talking to you!"

Oh, and the Satanic Verses thing. Yes, he did say that blaspheming against the Prophet was punishable by death under Islamic law; I think, though I'm open to correction, that he later acknowledged that this was an idiotic thing to say.

I don't think he's stopped recording; Amazon lists an audiotape called A is for Allah by him (under the spelling Yusuf Islam, by the way, rather than Youssef). Oh, and two more called Prayers of the Last Prophet and The Life of the Last Prophet.

My 2 euro cent: if a man gets religion and tries to live his life better because of it, I'm not about to object.

The crazy wing of Islam seems to have got the upper hand at the moment, but most Muslims are perfectly decent people. As for wife-beating, just drop down to your friendly local outpatients (ER for Americans) next Saturday night and ask the battered wives their partners' religion; I doubt it'll universally be Muslim.

Was watching a good programme on TV last night about Gram Parsons, God rest him. What a sad waste.... if he'd found religion rather than the kind of solutions he found, maybe he'd still be making good music, or at least living a happy life.

By the way, DVD playerss are dead cheap nowadays; Amazon.co.uk has one for something like £35, a Yakumo. I got one and it's really, really good.

Personally, I would appreciate reading a good multifaceted discussion of Islamic teachings, traditions, prejudices and notions about music, but perhaps the Mudcat is not the most likely place to hold such a dialogue; probably best to hold it someplace where there are more (and diverse) Muslims. I must say I was hoping for a bit more musical content when I first clicked on this thread.

When 'Tea for the Tillerman' came out I had a couple of flatmates who made love to it every night in the room next door to me. Their favourite track was 'Hard Headed Woman' which they played over and over. I don't think I'll ever forget one lyric from that song or from the whole album. I was really sorry to hear about his treatment by the American government though. Sometimes I wonder if people like Yusef Islam are used to make some kind of example of. It is like he is being brought face to face with all the implications of his life choices. Imagine if we all had to go through that. I mean we all make mistakes or do things we shouldn't inadvertently sometimes. It is pretty scary stuff. I wish him well.

Yo jOhn, personally I am an atheist but I firmly believe everybody should be free to hold any religion or belief as long as it does not interfere or impinge on others.
I live in West Yorkshire and I too have muslim friends, Cat Stevens
[ actually from a Cypriot background ] having been raised in this liberal country has adopted someone elses religion and like all other fanatics wanted to impose a corrupted version on others, maybe he is more liberal now ? I don't know, nevertheless he has had a priveliged upbringing in this country and ought to respect it better.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I guess the implication is that when in Britain do as the British do? Is that the Protestant English that still celebrate Novenber the 5th by burning an efigy of a Catholic? Or the Catholic British that blow up children in Warrington? Or the West Indian British that make their money in Moss Side with guns and drugs?

Or is it the British that tolerate all religions and races? The ones who run the corner shops and take racist abuse with a smile? The ones who understand that a vocal minority are not representative of a whole race or religion?

Is this turning into a very strange thread or am I having an odd turn? I thought it was a thread about a good singer/songwriter who, as far as I know, has never broken the law of the land or done anything to warrant deportation??? :-)

Cheers

eric-theres probably more practising muslims in England, than there are christians, church attendences are falling, whilst Mosque attendences are growing, and more new mosques are been built than churches.
[I'm not a muslim, but many of my freinds are, it is a peaceful religon, its just a few nutters that spoil it, and give the rest of them a bad name].

Ted-you can get a decent DVD player from ASDA for less than £30, i got one a while ago, picture quality is exellent, it plays CDs and is Multi-Region, [plays imported DVD's].

FYI....
Cat Stevens (or Yusef Islam) is actually mentioned in the Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, but not by name; but it's obvious who he's talking about. He talks about "the young Englishman (or foreigner) with the beautiful voice (who converted to Islam)" ; and how he was doing radio shows for a radical Islamic radio station. Sorry I don't remember more; it's been ten years, probably, since I read the book.

I always enjoyed his music, too...

No I don't think I'm being simplistic, or simple minded or whatever. My feelings and thoughts are as profound as the next mans.

Last year I lost a good friend, a guy called Roger Brooks, a Nottingham lad About the same age as Cat, maybe a year or two younger. He was physically beautiful, he was far better guitarist than Cat, his songs were stunning - some of the best songs written this century, a great performer - a committed musician. He just happened along in the middle of the great contemporary versus traditional debate, so mediocities obstructed his career.

His songs were never played on the folk radio programs even. His status never really rose much above that of floor singer in England. he never had much more recognition than the guy reading the mole catcher from an exercise book and getting that wrong. So he ended up gigging pubs mostly abroad - presumably mostly to people who couldn't understand the wit and lyricism of his song writing.

then we have Jack Hudson. Gifted with a voice of such depth and sweetness - yet festival organisers would rather let his talents go unheard by a decent sized audience.....

Did Cat write morning has broken, I seem to remember singing it in primary school fifty years ago.

One thing I feel pretty certain of, is that if he had had any appreciation at all of what God had given him - not just in terms of talent, but in terms of recognition. how exceptional was his financial and artistic success when placed along side of much more talented men.

then whatever his route to God - Christian , Buddha, Moslem - it wouldn't involve such self conscious spirituality. A bit like TS Eliot's poetry after he found Anglicanism, somehow there is diminishment in his humanity.

weelittledrummer, that strikes me as a little simplistic.

There are many who have handled early 'success' well, and many who haven't.

There are many for whom the reverse (in terms of late 'success')is true.

'Morning has Broken' and 'The Wind' etc are enough for me...

My thought about him is that it all happened a bit too easily for him. He was with a major record label since he was about 17. If he'd had to slog along unappreciated, like some great singer/songwriters do, with really just his belief in music to sustain him - then I don't think he would have cast it away so easily.

The riches of the world were showered upon him and he had no idea of their value at all.

I suppose I sort of feel sorry for him.

People should feel free to live wherever they want to, regardless of their religion, as far as I'm concerned. It's up to them to decide, not someone else who is offended by something negative that he associates with their religion.

There are as many good things (in fact, more of them) that you could say about Muslims as you could bad things. Just depends what your focus is, that's all.

I saw Cat Stevens once around about 1974, and he did a superb show. Philosophically speaking his songs didn't really grab me, but they sounded great. I bear him no ill will for converting to Islam. That's his business and nobody else's.

In his recent documentary he says he never realy supported the fatwah but as he was an 'early' Islam at the time he said he belived whatever the Mullahs (or whatever) told him. Now he is an eminent Muslem himself he is in a position to argue against the church leaders and would do so against such a fatwah in future.

Sounded genuine to me and if so I think we need more people like him to bring some aspects of Islam into the 21st century!

It's an interesting point you make, eric.

But I pay for things all time without either knowing or approving where that money is going...including my taxes.

If indeed Mr Stevens/Islam was idiotic enough to support a fatwah against Salmon Rushdie, then shame on him.

But I will never stop appreciating the songs that were a great part of my emotional life for several decades because of what his religious or political leanings are now.

There are certainly good ethical discussions to be had on this point that have probably been seen on Mudcat threads before...Can we support artists when we don't support their views in other areas?
