BRAND NEW VENUE
Disregard all previous posts about Market Rasen Folk Club and a new venue.

As of today after a very long search for a suitable venue which was caused by circumstances beyong my control, I have now done it :-)

MARKET RASEN FOLK CLUB will now be held at WALESBY VILLAGE HALL

Map :- http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=513500&y=392500&z=3&sv=Walesby&st=3&tl=Walesby,+Lincolnshire+[City/Town/Village]&searchp

You should be able to Zoom in to see the street names.

It is a perfect place and a lovely village. It has a bar and is a lovely cosy room. I am sure you will all like it. The people there are very enthusiastic :-)
There is a small car park for about 8 and parking is allowed along the lanes providing nobody blocks off anybodys driveway. So it is treat the neighbours with respect. As if you didn't already :-)

It is carry on as usual (every other Friday). Nothing changed really just a new venue.

The next meeting is on Friday July 30th 2004.
Doors open 7:45, music starts at 8:15 and finishes at 11:30

Guest Spotlight - John Blanks
Special appearance - Roger Beard
Young persons spotlight - Rosie & Lucy Coggle
Support Artists - DACAPO, Jane Kitchen and Ernie Geddes, John Foreman
£2 entrance Artists playing on night £1

No Smoking applies and the hall is disabilty and family friendly.

I have worked so hard to find a suitable venue against all the odds, so please please support me and attend as often as you can.

I will be updating my website over the weekend to reflect the new venue. I have problems trying to update the map on the website so please realise it shows where the old venue is.

http://www.marketrasenfolkclub.co.uk

You can e-mail from the website.

Many thanks for all the support and encouragment to persevere and not let the club fold.

Les Worrall

Is Walesby the place with the abandoned church on top of the hill? I slept there one moonlit night propped up in the porch whilst walking from Lincoln to me house. I don't think I have never been so bloody terrified.

I am not sure actually. I am going up to the hall in a minute to meet the committee. I will ask them about that.

I took this photo whilst CAA type-testing my newly-restored R101.

It is a lovely, lonely place. This hilltop is where the village of Walesby once crowded around the church. The vicar - I forget his name - no - it has come back - Thomas Biltcliffe - was recorded as saying "fuck this for a game of soldiers - I'm off" and established a new settlement in the valley below. The hilltop buildings were robbed of their stone, leaving nothing but the medieval street pattern that is still visible today. The church holds one service a year and its position on the Viking Way (Barton sans Hyphens to Oakham) has given credence to its previous reputation as the ramblers' church. There are naive stained glass depictions of healthy outdoor pursuits in the 1940s stained glass windows in the nave. The porch gained an "uncomfortable" rating in the July 1995 edition of Vagrancy Today magazine.

Great stuff TA hope you do manage to make it.

Strollin'
The bar will be open - I paid £1.60 for a bitter shandy - driving and all that.
They have a real ale on and a lager and a reasonably good array of bottled drinks.
Very friendly committee and people there. They are willing to provide their PA system when needed and get the lighting how we want it.
Trust me folks, its gonna be good there.

Oaklet
Yes that is the church you are talking about, so no reason for saying you coudn't find it when your spot comes around :-)

Got up this morning and thought i would put my thoughts into a sort of poem. Never done this before.

The Market Rasen Folk Club Blues

One day I had a dream
To start a folk club I did beam
I went along to the social club
Who said luvely jubbly, just the job

So we got started back in March
With much hard work and the occasional fart
The singers got quickly to their task
Much more from them I couldn't ask

It became apparent very soon
These artists sang a lovely tune
People came from near and far
As the club pulled in the money over the bar

Everybody seemed very happy
Until this little chappy
Who rose up from the committee
And said hang on here we want a bigger fee

Now the organiser said get stuffed
The committee they were not chuffed
They gave our Les a red card
Which he thought was rather hard

These little scheming money makers
With brains no bigger than a shred of paper
Would not back down on the price
And thought our Les was in a vice

But with sleeves rolled up and a big determination
Our Les set about finding a new location
This proved very difficult and hard to find
It was becoming such a bind

Then all of a sudden when out of the blue
He found a village hall that would do
The people there are very nice
They have a bar with drinks at an affordable price

This place is called Walesby Village Hall
Where a big welcome will be there for all
So come on down you have a choice
To come and sing with good cheer and voice

So here's a warning to all those money makers
Who want to screw the folk club scene shakers
If you can't see the business sense and get smart
Stick your business up your arse

Cheers
Les

Poetic licence, there for the taking,
Whether of ours or others making.
Everyone is able to make a rhyme,
If they would only take the time.

This next work is dedicated to Les for his tireless devotion to duty:-

I know an old git called Worral,
Whose club closed so he was in sorrow.
But he got off his bum,
Cos he aint so dumb,
And found a new club on the morrow.

His friends said Oh Les Well done,
We're going to have so much fun.
It will all work out,
There is never a doubt,
If there was I'd buy you a gun.

You don't have to throw a dice,
To check if Walesby is nice.
We know it will be,
and will come and see,
But please don't double the price!

Historical refewrence in the last line. Please forgive me Les. Be Blessed.

No, I moved to the North East in 1975 and would probably be lost there now. I have, however, recently re-established contact with Dick Appleton, a highly versatile guitar player (He once played with the Singing Postman and still lives in Grimsby). All the best from fB.

Ok you yellow bellies. I hope you listened to John Blanks taking over at Radio Lincolnshire. He must have picked 3 of the longest songs he could sing.
Having said that, I will let him off, because he was very interesting and sang so well. Not easy when you know you are live on radio.

So a big well done John. What colour are your pants now LOL

Sorry GS, wanted to do Stan Rogers because he's my favourite, Jack Hudson because he's too bloody good to be ignored the way he is, and a Trad song, so it had to be Annachie Gordon. Lay Down Your Weary Tune is on the set-list for Friday night, never fear!

Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated.

What can I say. The whole evening was a great success. The room was full and a whole load of very talented artists sang and performed their socks off. Can't ask for more than that. :-)

Special thanks to Strollin' Johnny for being such a good MC.

Parking is a bit of a problem, but so long as people park sensibly along the lanes and don't block off peoples drives and don't park on the grass verges, then everything should be fine.

I will leave the rest of the mudcatters who attended to reviewing the evening.

So finally many thanks to everybody that attended both artists and listeners. It's team work. :-)

And now...the next morning...more time to spend....so:-
Strollin' Johnny...you did a great job with the introductions last night..that in itself would have been enough for some but....You really were the star of last nights show. The line up was quite impressive too. John Foreman(hope that's the right name) followed the intro and first few songs by John B with very much his own style of Folk performance. Ernie and Jane played and sung together which was certainly a new one on me...Ernies guitaring and Janes lovely silky voice made for excellent listening. Simon Johnson, who I personally have not had the pleasure of hearing before, gave a polished professional performance(and had one of the songs he wrote some time ago sung by John B). Da-Capo were excellent and execute those Steeleye Span songs so well. Nice too to hear a-capella. Rosie and Lucy Coggle, mesmerised us with their music..we will be seeing more of them no doubt. Don't know the name of the last man who played but he also was excellent. Hope I haven't missed anyone.
Strollin Johnny was as usual impressive, carrying on his talent and professional approach from his Wednesday..Radio Lincolnshire appearance....John has a perfect face for Radio...sorry! only joking John.
The night was such a success...organisation first class...music excellent...staff at the Hall excellent...beer good....what more can we ask for....Yes..you got it...Les the master organiser did not put the prices of admission up...What a man!!!! Well done Les.
Best wishes.

That was Roger Beard who was excellent and did justice to rounding an excellent evening off.

Spot on review there GS. Many thanks for that.

Now let me think. You would pay at least a tenner for such quality music.
Calculator out 60 x £10 = £600. mmmm enough to go on holiday with.

Na don't worry folks, I will still keep it at £2 entrance.

All money made goes back in the pot for Main Guest artists appearing in the future at MRFC. Such as Bob Fox, John Breeze, CARA, George Papavgeris, John Conolly, Jack Hudson, Mary Humphries and Anahata, Vin Garbutt.

Watch this space for more artists still to be booked :-)
