You can find the words and a link to a midi of the tune at: Lyr/Chords Add:Keep The Home Fires Burning. There is also Lyr Req:Keep The Home Fires Burning (words and link to sheet music at Levy) and Tune Req:Keep The Home Fires Burning (links to midi and to a real player file, but I haven't checked if still active).

Is that the one you're looking for, JustLearning, the old World War II song?

"Keep the Home Fires Burning" sung by Oscar Seagle (baritone) & Columbia Stellar Quartette (rec. 1918) is at The Virtual Gramophone.

These are at American Memory:

"'Till the boys come home" / Novello ; [performed by] Frederick Wheeler (1916) [audio]

"Keep the home-fires burning; Till the boys come home" (1915) [sheet music]

WWI...I used to have a midi of John McCormick singing it. I think that is probably the definitive version. We used to have an old record of it, and also ...oops forgot the one that they always sing..

I'm sorry, no. these aren't what I was looking for. I don't beleive the song is a WWanything song. It was a performance on my Telluride Festival CD by Left Hand String Band. Like I said, I can't find any info on the song OR the band? Weird.

Hi, Just Learning - Can you transcribe the lyrics from the recording you have? There is a recording of "Keep Those Homefires Burning" available here (click), with a very nondescript sound clip.

Here are the words I can remember..

THey were called in from the hillside they were gathered from the glen
And the companies (I heard country) found them ready at the starting call for men
For no gallant son of freedom to a tyrant's yoke should bend
And a valliant heart must answer to the ______ call of friend

Keep the homefire burning while your hearts are yearning
Though the lads are far away they dream of home
There's a silver lining through each dark cloud shining
Turn the dark cloud inside out till the boys come home

Overseas their came a pleading help a nation in distress
And we gave our glorious laddies honor bade us do no less

But as was said above, the requested song is NOT the WWII song, which has been posted more than once in other threads.

It appears simply to be a modern piece with a derivative title. I found a sound clip, but it was of the intro only, and therefore completely useless. If "Just Learning" were to quote a few lines from the CD (which is called Telluride Bluegrass Festival - Reflections Vol. 1) there would be no need for us to speculate aimlessly.

Malcolm, that is exactly the CD I was referring to. I've been away for a bit, but,the first verse and chorus.....

Soon the rain outside my window will turn to snow
As Autumn winds chase down Aspen trees
and turn their leaves to gold
I can hear the geese come calling, across the open sky
So wild and free, as they take flight

Chorus:
So keep those home fires burning
Through the dark of the night
Soon I'll be returnin'
Be there one more time
Before the mornin' light

Anyway, I really dig on this song, it has a very calming effect on me. BTW, this whole CD is really very good.

Also, I read some of the liner notes, apparently, Lefthand String Band was a precursor to Leftover Salmon. Drew Emmitt wrote and sang.

Thanks.

KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING
Words, Lena Guilbert Ford; Music, Ivor Novello; ©1914.

1. They were summoned from the hillside; they were called in from the glen,
And the country found them ready at the stirring call for men.
Let no tears add to their hardship, as the soldiers pass along,
And although your heart is breaking, make it sing this cheery song:

CHORUS: Keep the Home Fires Burning, while your hearts are yearning.
Though your lads are far away they dream of home.
There's a silver lining, through the dark cloud shining.
Turn the dark cloud inside out, till the boys come home.

2. Overseas there came a pleading, "Help a nation in distress!"
And we gave our glorious laddies, honour made us do no less,
For no gallant son of freedom to a tyrant's yoke should bend,
And a noble heart must answer to the sacred call of "Friend." CHORUS

That's a kind thought, Gene, but if you check the links at the top of the page you'll find that that song has already been posted here.

Can anyone help with the song that "Just Learning" asked for?

I have the same dilemma and desire to have the words/chords to Drew Emmitt's Keep Those Home Fires Burning. I've worked out almost all the lyrics from the Telluride CD, frustrated with the few words I can't get. Would you like me to post the rest of the verses?
