Fiddle Player wanted, to join a band playing traditional folk music, they already have flute player, whistles player etc, but need a fiddler.
I don't have contact details, as i heard this request on Folkwaves, BBC Radio Lincolnshire last night, if your intrested, or know somebodt that is, then ring BBC Radio Lincolnshire, for the bands contact details.
I don't know which band it is, or exactly where they are based, you will have to ring the bbc lincs people to find out proper details.

Folkwaves comes from Radio Derbyshire. I rang them but they didn't have any info.
There is no point in anybody ringing until Folkwaves is on again next Monday when Kathryn is there.

You can e-mail Kathryn on folkwaves@bbc.co.uk

or ring Kathryn 01332 616161 live between 7:00pm to 9:00pm next Monday

I think you are the best fiddler in the world.

However I have never seen or heard Rosie and Lucy Coggle play, but this Friday they are playing live at Market Rasen Folk Club at Walesby Village Hall, so I will have to reserve judgement :-)

MR has Oaklet got baby oakley welks around then :-)

Then out of his knapsack, he took a fine fiddle
And he played her such a merry tune that the valleys did ring.
"Hark, hark!" cried the fair maid, "Hear the nightingale sing!"

Oakley is 17 short of 1ooo postings to the Mudcat thing. The Cara website www.carasmusic.com is a small number sort of 50,000 hits since February 16th. We are very big in Mongolia, Akansas and Englund.

Guest Scratchybow. If you go to www.carasmusic.com you can hear snatches of me ruining 4 perfectly lovely tracks of that lovely Ryan Feller and his guitarist - old whatisface. They are only brief vignettes because the full thing would have been far too much for sensitive people.

I wish you'd all stop going about me.

Thanks Scratchy, I must admit that apart from being a duffer at traditional repertoire, I simultaneously manage to combine this feat with being a complete duffer at Lincolnshire fiddle tunes. I'm sure I'd love them but have never encountered any that I know of. What's the best way to hear a selection performed? Are there performing Lincolnshire fiddlers who specialise in trad. Lincoln tunes; are there CDs, tapes or books?

BTW thanks for the comment on the site - I am particularly happy that you enjoyed listening to the short clips.

Are you a Lincolnshire-type performing person perchance?

Broadside and the Little Band have performed Lincolnshire tunes- mainly from the Gibbon Manuscript ( a village musician fronm Tealby in the early 19th century). The manuscript was edited and published by Pete Sumner. There are still copies around on festival bookstalls.

Nope Oakley I reside in fair Cheshire where we have a reasonable amount of local fiddle tunes that are played in sessions hereabouts. I do enjoy english fiddle tunes and was interested to learn anything more about your region and local playing styles.

Thanks Rozza for the reference to the Gibbons Manuscript, which I have not heard of and I will make further investigations to see if I can track down a copy or even find an abc collection lurking somewhere on the superhighway.

There seemed to be enough fiddles for the Royal Philharmonic at the Friday night of the Eurogathering - they presumably all turned up so they could say that they'd played with (?) the aforementioned, brilliantly talented Oaklet. Surely there must be one or two of them available.

Scratch, we held the Eurogathering in Barrow on the wrong weekend in May this year, as it was the UK's turn to hold the presidency. Mooman is hosting next year's Eurogathering in that France on the first weekend in May, and plans are afoot for an expeditionary force to land in Normandy to attend. See the 2005 Eurogathering thread that is somewhere round here. I'll try and find it.

Peter Sumner disappeared to California some years ago. You might like to look at the Village Music site if you're hunting regional tunes.

Scratch - it has to be said that is still some considerable debate raging about the location and the date of the 2005 Eurogathering. Popular opinion is evenly divided. In the one camp is Skipjack and in the other, everyone else.

Well I think I am now a little nearer to understanding, having read some of the previous posts about this event. Appears to have been an almighty 'cock up' of majestic proportions, or am I wrong. Something to do with a clash of events taking place on the same weekend.

Next thing I learn is that Barrow is not the one in Cumbria but an altogether different place called Barrow Haven. Which I think might be on the Lincolnshire/Yorkshire border. But once again I could be wrong.

Finally, there is a little controversy about the location of Eurogathering 2005, could be in France, there again may not be.

I am right so far or just totally confused ?

I think Barrow is in Humberside. But in the old days it would have been Lincolnshire. What the hell. I have had some great artists from there that have played at my club, and have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. :-)

No Villan. Firmly now back in Lincolnshire after a brief sojourn in Humberside. Even if the Lincolnshire is now the North Lincolnshire unitary authority watered-down sort of Lincolnshire. But I dont't give a fig as I'm from Oldbury, Worcestershire. Or West Midlands as it now is.

Scratchy - I can't equate the Mudcat Eurogathering 2004 with the words Cock Up - instead words like Brilliant, Skipjack, Friends, Fond Memories, Great Events, Music and Responsible Drinking spring more readily to mind.

I highly recommend a trip to France or Upton on Severn next year for the 2005 edition in May or August.

Regarding Rosie and Lucy Coggle mentioned on this thread. Watched them perform at Market Rasen Folk Club(Walesby) last evening and have to say they are brilliant. Rosie on the fiddle(if you pardon the expression) Lucy on the Bohdran and Double Bass(or cello..I don't know the difference)...Not long left school but talented and confident. I have a feeling we will be hearing more of them.
Best wishes.

GS - the 'cello or violincello to give it its anotomical name is the wooden instrument that you clench between your thighs. In the sessions around Barton sans Hyphens, 'cellos are often filled with lentils and shaken loudly, despite the effort involved, particularly during contemplative and sensitive songs. Only once have I heard the double bass (the larger version that you can hide behind) filled with golf balls to acheive a slightly more robust timbre than the shakey 'cello. On that particular evening, the operator was hospitalised for two weeks for heat exhaustion.

The bodrahahahan on the other hand, is a round drummy thing that you thrash with a stick.

I hope that clears it up.
