Great prog on Martin Carthy last friday on BBC2. This week's programme features Viv Stanshall of Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band fame. Should be good stuff.

I saw the show on BB4, enjoyed it but I found it a little sad.

I loved the Bonzos but always felt that they never quite achieved....... Perhaps that is exactly why they and Viv are viewed with such affection? Are we all still waiting for a punchline - that will never be delivered?

What instrument was Horace Batchelor (the inventor of the famous Inferdraw method)playing?

He must have been playing the Keynsham spelt K - E - Y .....

If Roger Ruskin-Spear could reach new horizons in sound on the electric shirt-collar, nothing is impossible!

Are there any transatlantic Bonzo freaks out there, or are they all thinking the Brits have totally lost it at last?

Five years ago I was a four stone apology. Today I am two separate gorillas.

I really enjoyed this show on BBC4, it's a must for Bonzos/Stanshall fans out there, plenty of archive footage and interviews with relevant people.

The only one in the intro and the outro that I don't know is 'Franklin McCormack'. Who he?

That J Arthur Rank - he was from Hull as well.

Franklyn McCormack was a Chicago broadcaster who died in 1971. Details HERE.
Assuming of course that that's who Viv Stanshall was singing about.

Yes I suppose it must be, Ray. I'm not sure where Viv would have heard him, unless he had some connection with Radio Luxemburg (like Horace Batchelor and Garner Ted Armstrong).

There's a story about Viv S and Keith Moon going into a boutique together once to browse, and eventually both deciding on the same pair of trousers. A tug-of-war ensued resulting in the trousers being torn down the middle. At which point a one-legged man (set up by them) comes into the shop and says something like "Just what I'm after"

Must get out my Best of Bonzos LP and give it a spin again. Loved Intro/Outro. The tune was, of course, C-Jam Blues, which I've probably got more recordings of in my jazz collection than I have House of the Rising Sun in my folk/blues collection.

A likely story but:

I remenber spending a lot of time finding out about the best pair of binoculars, for the best price, a friend having asked me to. I reported back and few weeks later he proudly showed me a monocular he had obtained (for half the price). In all my detailed research, I had overlooked the obvious fact that my friend had only one eye!

Absolutly true so perhaps the trouser story was also?
