The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in their infinite wisdom has seen fit to NOT tell us much about their newest venture.

Roots Music Canada

It seems to have a lot of full songs from a variety of performers. I came across the site while looking for information about a songwriter named Carolyn Anele. They have five full songs of hers there. Her own site has a few short clips there.

Let's publicize this site, and fill it up with good folk songs.

This is what their description says about Roots Music:

Canadian Roots and folk music, is based on the longstanding music of various communities across Canada. These genres contain new music by that are not only a reflection of the strength of musical tradition in Canada, but also the growing popularity of the roots and folk music scene. Few countries can posses a musical scene with such diversity and longevity as Canada. Folk music in Canada, for example, is more popular now than in the 1960s, when it first came into the spotlight. Folk artists showcase music across clubs, festivals, and concerts across the country and have a strong network of independent music labels as well.

Any debate?

I wish I could just call up all of the Folk musicians, rather than their Top 10 or whatever!

Davis Essig was available just now and I haven't heard him in years (I used to play Paint Me A Picture). Pretty cool site. Thanks George!

Peace, Mooh.

I have some trouble considering their "Top 5" in the category of "roots" music. I'll agree that it shows diversity, the closest thing to a "folk" song is David Essig's electric version of a venerable old gospel tune that was a staple of the gospel/blues tradition. I haven't seen David for years, but I was disappointed to hear him selling out good music that badly. He used to be one of my favourite performers from the Toronto-Hamilton area folkies of the early 1970s — helluva guitarist even then.

A couple of the others are good (especially Jenny Whiteley's Dance Till Dawn), but they're modern country, not "roots."

I didn't explore the site too extensively yet, but where is the music of Rick Fielding, Bill Garrett, Terry Tufts, Garnet and Stan Rogers, Stephen Fearing, James Keelaghan or a host of others?

cheers,

david

James Keelaghan is there with one song.

I can't get to see ALL the folk genre artists for some reason.

Looks like you have to know an artist's name, and you can search by the Artist Name at the bottom.

I know, even with broadband it is SLOW. Blame it on Macromedia & Flash!

Although I think it's great CBC put some resources into creating a website for roots music in Canada, I can't help but wonder what the &%$ they were thinking when they designed the site. I find it completely clunky, hard to understand and impossible to navigate. I actually have music in there somewhere, but I don't know how people are supposed to find me.

And by the way, the last time I checked in there, they seemed to have the exact same songs in their top 5 as about 6-8 months before that at least. So I don't think it's being updated that much, if at all.

I wish they had put their money into creating something that was a little easier to use and a little less flashy.

Eve

I agree with you, Eve. It's a pain to use. But, it IS there. I just wish there was someone to vent with about our problems with the site.

George, you might try going into CBC's website here, At the bottom of the home page there is a "contact us" clicky that might get you to someone who will listen to your suggestions.

cheers,

david

Tried that contact before. Never helped in the previous instances. Never ever heard from them on correcting something I spotted wrong on one of their web-sites. (They never corrected it either, at least in the six months after that I checked)

A simple index, by artist and by composition, would solve one problem.
I find the site completely off-putting. The designer either is mentally challenged or was appointed by anti-CBC interests.

I put Ian Tyson in the Search, and got the searching message. After three minutes, I quit. (I have broadband and all the horsepower).

Same thing when I searched for Stan Rogers. Went off into never-never land and never came back.

Yup, disappointed in the CBC, imagine that!

Btw, I'm listening to Yukon Sampler 5, some good stuff. Where'd I get it, OCFF or somewhere?

Peace, Mooh.
