Nothing wrong with a little gloat now and then, Ive just aquired another short coss penny of Henry III,the portrait isn't so hot but most of the legend is readable on the obverse and reverse, lets me know a bloke called william made it in Cantabury.

I've not got any suggestions, just want to gloat that today I found a George III English coin stamped 1788. It's very worn but the date and most of the portrait are visible, as is part of a shield on the obverse.

A chap once brought a coin, obviously created by a hammered stamp, for identification to a library I was working. He'd found it in a can of old screws and nails he'd purchased at an auction.

Research showed it was a tetradrachima from the time of Alexander of Macedon (or slightly later). It was in excellent shape, but how it arrived in rural northeastern Ohio is one of life's mysteries.

Considering that Julius only really appeared on British soil for a short period that is interesting, did they get spent by the invaders or did they come over from Europe in trade? which part of the UK did you find them in?

I got two Julius Caesar coins that i dug up with my metal detector in the 80's they too put a shiver down my spin sledge,but i do find it interesting to think how old they are.

Yes, they have a magnetic quality for me, the thought that these were handled on a day to day basis by our ancestors sends a small shiver down my back.

I seem to remember the folks here parsing out the peculiarities of Icelandic coins a couple of years ago. Who knows what you'll learn from Mudcatters!

Meanwhile, I have a handful of early American coins. They all seem to have a little something wrong that makes them interesting but not valuable. Perhaps it's time to do some research myself!

ok, its not a music thread, but the subject is pretty old, I hope.
I'm sure I have seen on other threads that some catters collect coins, to be specific, Englash hammered silver.

I have asked the guys on Google groups but as this place is allways a mine of information I thought I would ask here as well.

I have with me a short cross english penny which I am sure is either class 4 or 5, which sub class I can only guess.
The portrait is very poor so I can't get many clues from that. The legend on the reverse I am fairly sure is "henri on lund", there is one pellet visible on the right side of "on" in the legend and a colon to the left ot the cross pate. This puts it as a class 4b in my books due to the many errors recorded in this class.

Finaly the cross which should be voided on the reverse looks quite solid with no pellets at the ends of the arms, this raises my suspsision that this may be a forgery, contemporary or otherwise.
Does anyone one have any ideas as to the correct identification of this coin. I am away from home so most of my books are not available, I only have my CR Wren guide with me.
