Subject: Doherty's Boarding House
From: terry_sulymko@carleton.ca

I'm trying to track down the words and music for a song that my mother remembers hearing around the Pubnico area of Nova Scotia in the 1930's. The correct title may not be Doherty's Boarding House but those words appear in the lyrics. One of the verses starts off with "On Sundays we have liver...". If anyone could help me with this, I'd appreciate it. I'm also trying to find the music for Paddy McGinty's Goat (found the words but not the music). Thanks.

Great find, Guest. I'm putting the lyrics here from the site you located. Mods, if someone could change the title to reflect the correct spelling that would be wonderful.

DOUGHERTY'S BOARDING HOUSE.

I'm going to try And tell you, so listen unto me,
About a panic boarding house in Frog street, No. 3.
Kept by a man named Dougherty, an Irishman, of course.
A regular European North American boarding house.

Chorus.
Cornelius Slaughtery, just from the battery, Timothy Regan, Mike McGlue,
Big foot Hennessy, Patsey Leary, all in one room, number two:
Jerry Rawley, the man from Galway, Pat McGlone, and a fellow called Mouse,
Cobblers, tailors, coopers, sailors, down at Dougherty's boarding house.

On week days we have liver, on Sundays we have mush,
And when the bell for dinner rings, you ought to see them rush;
And the way they make the landlord stare as each one makes a grab,
And demolish everything they see, 'twould make your heart feel sad.-Chorus.

And when at night we go to bed and try and get some sleep,
Then in walks big O'Donnell with his No. 15 feet;
And bedbugs, too, they stick like glue, and promenade in gangs.
And bottle-tailed flies get on your eyes, and mosquitoes on your hand. -Chorus.

When I was young, I recall my father singing:

On week days we have liver, on Sunday's we have mush
But when you hear the dinner bell ring, you ought to see them rush
There's Patsy Leary, Mike Mcleary, Big Foot Hennessy and a fellow called mouse
Patsy Leary, Mike Mcleary, all at Dougherty's boarding house.

(not sure about all the spelling)

Subject: Lyr Add: MURPHY'S BOARDING HOUSE (C Frank Horn)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Jul 14 - 06:24 PM

As it happens, there are several comical songs about boarding houses where the proprietor has an Irish name. Here's one of them:

From the Levy Collection:

MURPHY'S BOARDING HOUSE
Words and music by C. Frank Horn.
Boston: W. F. Shaw, ©1887.

1. At Mistress Murphy's boarding house in Elderberry Row,
They dish the finest victuals up, I'd have you all to know.
Her boarders are of ev'ry grade and nationality,
And they all make affidavit to respectability.
There's a banjo in the attic and a flute in ev'ry room,
While a big brass band across the way goes oom-pah-oom-pah-oom.
There's a lady in the parlor plays the latest airs from Strauss,
So we never want for music down at Murphy's boarding house.

CHORUS: Mary Ann, put the dinner on the table.
Sweep away the scraps of cheese you threw behind the door.
Susie, run just as fast as you are able,
And gather up the flannel cakes you dropped upon the floor.
There's pork and beans for Flanagan and cabbage for McHugh.
There's codfish cakes for Finnegan; for Anderson, some stew;
Some sausage for Miss Mortimer, and sauerkraut for Miss Krause.
Sure they all have tender stomachs down at Murphy's boarding house.

2. There are no handles to the knives; the forks have but one tine,
And when we want to go to bed, they hang us on a line.
The sugar bowl is empty and the chairs are short of legs,
And we have to be as careful as though sitting down on eggs.
One day young Aaron Moses done a very daring deed,
For he spoke in terms of rapture of a chicken fricasseed;
But she pick'd him up and shook him as a cat would shake a mouse.
There was war 'twixt Jew and Gentile down at Murphy's boarding house.

3. She advertises boarding on the European plan:
If you for meals are not on time, you get them when you can;
And if your bus'ness keeps you out, or lodge keeps up too late,
You get back just in time to find a padlock on the gate.
One day for recreation, young Alphonso James McHugh
Picked up a little poodle dog and dropped it in the stew.
She dashed the dishcloth in his face and down he went, ker-souse!
There's none of us get lonesome down at Murphy's boarding house.

Subject: Lyr Add: MCCARTHY'S BOARDING HOUSE (T E Powers)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Jul 14 - 11:16 PM

From the sheet music at Duke University:

MCCARTHY'S BOARDING HOUSE
Words and music by Thomas E. Powers
New York: Mrs. Pauline Lieder, ©1878.

1. Dan McCarthy lives in Cherry Street,
    McCarthy's boarding house.
He keeps a boarding house so neat,
    McCarthy's boarding house.
Five dollars a week to him we pay,
    McCarthy's boarding house.
We get three square meals ev'ry day,
    McCarthy's boarding house.

CHORUS: There's the Clearys and Learys,
And McLions and Flynns,
Denny, the Regans, and the Fagins,
    McCarthy's boarding house. REPEAT

2. I tell you, boys, they feed us high,
    In McCarthy's boarding house
On lobster salad and lemon pie,
    In McCarthy's boarding house.
Quail on toast, eggs and ham,
    McCarthy's boarding house.
Corned beef and cabbage and Italian jam,
    McCarthy's boarding house.

CHORUS: There is cobblers and nailers,
Tailors and weavers,
Tiny butchers and bakers,
    In McCarthy's boarding house. REPEAT

3. McCarthy bought a new piano
    For McCarthy's boarding house,
For his elegant daughter, big Johanna
    In McCarthy's boarding house.
And she's the girl knows how to play
    In McCarthy's boarding house.
She'd drive your appetite away
    In McCarthy's boarding house.

CHORUS: Johanna, alanna,
Loves Nailor, the Tailor
And faith, they'll be married
    In McCarthy's boarding house. REPEAT

[Spotify has a recording of this song by Parlormuse on "It's Not the Coat Makes the Gentleman" (2007).]
