G'day Burl,

I seem to have a different street address ... althought it is also in York (should dated from ~ 2002 ... ?).

I have e-mailed Gerry with the e-mail address I have for you ... and posted to him the URL for this thread. I'll PM the street address.

Regards,

Bob

Gerry-

Could you provide us a brief bio. There seems to be a lot of confusion within the folk music community with regard to your origin. If you're not careful someone may compose a song in your honor with completely eroneous information.

Thanks once again for your musical setting for "The Outside Track" and your kind permission for Roll & Go to record it on our forthcoming CD, ROLLING DOWN TO SAILORTOWN.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Gerry Hallom is NOT an 'Australian singer'. He was born in Richmond, Surrey in the UK in 1950. He just sings Australian material. Big difference!, He might like people to think he is Australian but that's something else altogether.

GERRY lived in Australia for some years, as did Martyn Wyndham Read, so I d0 not think it is a question of GERRY wanting people to think anything, he sings Australian material because he spent a considerable time there, and likes the songs.Dick Miles[an old friend of Gerrys]

I've enjoyed my e-mail contacts with him over the years and some day I hope to hear him sing live.

Gerry is the only 'professional' singer I have heard who does "Andy's Gone With Cattle" with a sensible meter. (It isn't a waltz).

Met him on a US tour a number of years ago.

Ahh Owen, when Gerry first arrived in York he had a very strong Aussie twang, more than twenty five years ago cos we were in our old house when I first met Gerry. Dunno how long he spent there but I don't think he ever claimed he was Australian, he sang a lot of Australian songs and I suppose everyone concluded he was Australian, I suppose a bit of the twang is still there although it is not something I would scrutinise so people might be forgiven for making assumptions, if you buy the LP's or cd's there is a biog on at least two of them explaining his roots so I don't think it is an issue really.

I think that in Australia, it would be almost impossible to NOT know of Lawson....and to sing at least some of his poems put to music. Some become very involved.

Dead right Roy, he is still every bit as good as he used to be, he does have a gaff in Portugal and as far as I know is still teaching, who knows but I for one would like to see him doing more even if it is just about York.

As it happens, I spent the tail end of last year digitising all my vinyls, including two of Gerry's, "Travelling Down The Castlereagh" and "A Run A Minute". Really, really nice to able to hear them again. Yes, his version of "Andy's Gone With Cattle" is by far the best I've heard, and his arrangement of "The Outside Track" is a thing of beauty. I could also mention many of the other songs on those albums, "The Free Selector's Daughter", "The Bonnie House Of Airlie", "General Leeds Clock Meeting", and Ralph McTell's "Gypsy", etc.

I got a cd recently "Undiscovered Australia Il" from Amazon, I think it is a compilation, has all those on along with my favourite Overlander. have to say that our version of Outside Track came from Gordon Bok via the singing of Charley Noble (Ipcar) and is quite a bit different to Gerry's rendition. I was gobsmacked when Charley gave us it's provenance and heard Gerry sing it live a few months ago, GB versionit has acquired an additional verse, it's just different!

I rate Gerry Hallom as an intelligent and thoughtful performer and he did many goods nights at the Witney Folk Club which we ran. A while ago I came across his CD On the Periphery, available from The Living tradition shop. It is in my opinion his finest work, full of interesting songs and arrangements. Grab yourself a copy while they still have them.

WARNING: POSSIBLE THREAD DRIFT!

If this was Witney FC in the mid-80s or so, we probably met, but I'm afraid the names and faces are getting very hazy now. I sang from the floor there a few times, as I was good friends with one of your regulars, a girl called Lynn.

That's the same club and Lynn is still around even tho' the club is long gone! I think I remember you Charles, did you play guitar and sing - really nice arrangements (open tuning?) I think you travelled from quite a way to visit us. I will mention to Lynn when I see her.

Been out of things recently, so haven't seen her since we had a brief chat at Bromyard around the late 80s / early 90s.

> even tho' the club is long gone!

Sorry to hear that. I always remember it with affection as a friendly club.

> I think I remember you Charles

O dear! Unlucky you ...

> did you play guitar and sing - really nice arrangements (open tuning?).

Both standard and open tunings, particularly Open C.

> I think you travelled from quite a way to visit us.

Yes, I used to come across from Gloucestershire, and then Herefordshire when I bought a house on the Glos/Heres border.

How nice that you remember all that rather than the obviously memorable thing about me, which is that I'm 6'4"!

> I will mention to Lynn when I see her.

By all means, and give her my very best wishes.

If she wishes to make contact, there's a contact email address on my website given above.

Charles....
> I think I remember you Charles

O dear! Unlucky you ...

Not unlucky, you played great and sang really interesting songs. I hope you are still performing, you had/have a talent that needs sharing! Nice to remember good times at the club. I will pass on your deatils to Lynn when I see her.

Sadly no. I've been too ill for some time with, despite a hospital full of specialists, some as yet undiagnosed lurgy.

Thanks, and I hope she's well and thriving.

G'day all,

I don't have details for Gerry's arrival and/or departure from Australia ... but I dealt with him (~ in 1975 and 1977) when I booked the 'Turner Hall', within the old Institute of Technology (now University of Technology Sydney), for a concert ... and some I of T student areas for workshop venues in the Bush Music Festivals I organised in those years.

Gerry was living and working at the Institute of Technology in Sydney, in those days ... and performing quite nicely, around the folk music scene.

Regards,

Bob

I saw Gerry Hallom at the Troubadour Folk Club in Churchville, Pennsylvania back in 1982 or 83. I have an autographed Traveling Down the Castlereigh LP from that night. I love his singing and playing style. He had a guitar that was smaller than a dreadnaught. This was an all acoustic club and he fit right in. It was place where you could here a pin drop when the performer was on the stage. It was in a nature center and used on Tuesday nights for folk music. Bob Pasquarella was the host.

I now live in Wilkesboro, NC where Merlefest takes place every April. I'd love to get Gerry over here!

I've looked for Gerry on Spotify and today one song came up. The album is: The Journey Continues, Fellside at 40. The song is Where the Brumbies Come to Water. It is classic Hallom, makes you feel you spent many days and nights with Rory Donohue in an Outback camp and miss him greatly and that his passing is not only of a person, but of a era.

BTW, Australian brumbies are the equivalent of U.S. wild mustangs. The difference is that since 1971 our mustangs have been protected and can be adopted, but the brumbies are considered varmints and treated as such. There was a recent story on BBC about having them wiped out.

(Spelling in last post, "you could hear")
