In the fifties?sixties this song (by Eartha Kitt?) was regularly played on the Armed Forces radio shows (BFBS).   Any catter got the lyrics and, perhaps VERY easy chords?

It will take me a long way back down memory lane.

Thanks

Sorry, no lyrics I could find.

But I did find the song: It was Josephine Baker, and it's still available on a CD called "Fabulous Josephine Baker. You can hear a sample here.

reminds me of the one Goldie Hawn sang in (I think) 'Dutchess and the Dirtwater fox' about the fruiterer and 'don't you never touch my plums!'

Thanks!   I'm sure that's the one - the patrol jeep used to rattle to it!

I still live in hopes for the chords, though!!

Hello Jacqued,

well, I listened to the sample ClaireBear found you, and I am pretty sure that most of it is just a simple I-IV-V progression. I think I would play it in C, so the chords would then be C, F and G... You could also play it in D (no bar chords): D, G and A. You'd probably have to put your capo on the 2nd fret if you choose these chords, though...

Good luck finding the song (and playing it!),

Pascal

On second thought, forget what I said about putting your capo on the 2nd fret when playing in D... It makes no sense. Oh, and maybe it's even easier to play it in A (A,D,E), these are probably the easiest chords to play.

T.

I found these listings at allmusic:

DON'T TOUCH ME TOMATOE (sic) sung by George Symonette on the various-artists compilation, "Putumayo Presents: Calypso," Putumayo CD 205, 2002.

DON'T TOUCH MY TOMATOES, credited to Bouillon/Lemarchand, recorded by Josephine Baker, on "The Fabulous Josephine Baker," RCA Victor 1962, and on the various-artists compilation "Divas Exotica," Capitol, 1999.

DON'T TOUCH ME TOMATO, variously attributed to Duke Reid and/or "Traditional" recorded by Phyllis Dillon and others.

It is sometimes listed as a calypso song and sometimes as reggae.

Here's a composite transcription of several sound samples. It might not be complete:

Oh, mister, don't touch me tomatoes.
Please don't you touch me tomatoes.
Touch me plum, me apple, potatoes.
[Or, "Touch me yam, me pumpkin, potato."]
For goodness' sake, don't touch me tomatoes.

Touch me this. Touch me that.
Touch me ev'rything I got.
You can touch me plum and apple, too,
Here's one thing you just can't do.

All you do is feel 'em, feel 'em.
Ain't you tired of the feel 'em, feel 'em?
All you do is squeeze 'em, squeeze 'em.
Man, ain't you tired of the squeeze 'em, squeeze 'em?

Mister, take advice from me.
The more you look, the less you see.
But if you must have your way,
Double the price you have to pay.

MISTER, DON'T TOUCH THE BANANA, recorded by Willy Chirino and written by Willy Chirino and Marisela Verena, which appears on 8 different Latin or World-Music albums.

DON'T TOUCH HER TOMATO, recorded by Lord Foodos on "Steel Band Calypso Music," Legacy CD 496, 2001.

DON'T TOUCH ME NYLON recorded by The Charmer (Louis Farrakhan—yes, that Louis Farrakhan) on "Calpyso Favorites: 1953-1954."

When I was stationed at RAF Nicosia during the 1950's this song was played over the station radio, piped into every hut, almost every day.
It had a calypso rhythm and was sung by a woman. I never learned her name, but I'm sure it wasn't Eartha Kitt, I would have recognised her.

My transcription from Spotify:

DON'T TOUCH MY TOMATO
As sung by Phyllis Dillon on "Big People Music, Vol. 1" (2008)

Please, mister, don't you touch me tomato.
No, don't touch me tomato.
Touch me yam, me pumpkin, potato.
For goodness' sake, don't touch me tomato.

Touch me this; touch me that.
Touch me ev'rything I've got.
Touch me plum, me apples, too,
But here's one thing you just can't do.

'Cause all you do is to feel up, feel up.
Ain't you tired of feel up?
All you do is to squeeze up, squeeze up.
Ain't you tired of squeeze up?

Mister, take advice from me.
The more you look is the less you see,
But if you just must have your way,
Double the price you have to pay.

Oh, you're hard like the coconut,
But nuts, oh, nuts are nothing but.
Before the chap that's good and hot, (?)
Make up your mind, man, what is what.

'Cause all you do is to feel up, feel up
Ain't you tired of feel up, feel up?
All you do is to squeeze up, squeeze up.
Ain't you tired of squeeze up, squeeze up? [Repeat and fade.]
