Thanks for bringing this song up it was one of my favourites when I was a child and I also remember there was an animated film with it too back in the 60's.

It is one of those songs like 'Froggy went a courtin and he did ride, with a sword and a pistol by his side a-ha! Lovely.

Going right back to original little spat at beginning of this thread, re the lady who had "only tried books ~ amusingly quaint": she can't have tried the Burl Ives Song Book, probably the most obvious I should have said, where the song can most easily be found. Oh, well ...

Martin, one of 2BS&S, sang and recorded it when in the Grimsby band Silver Birch, a really good rendition of it. Some of Silver Birch were school teachers and I think were named after a competition in school to "name the band" so maybe they sang it in their school, must have been in the 70's. Anyway wwe sing it now with old mrs flipper flopper and Cairo-me (phonetic)

I've heard the "mother" or "granny" called all sorts of things: "flipper-flopper", "twiddle twaddle".

The version I grew up with as a child didn't have the "kay-ro-me" or (as I heard in in the UK Midlands in the 70s "ky-row-lee") bits.

Dunno anout the USA, but in the UK it's a very common song. Certainly most children of my generation (born in the 1950s) would have had it sung to them in one of its many variants.

My grandfather moved from South Carolina in the 1890's. He sang this song to his grandchildren but he never saw it written or heard it other than from his grandfather.The lyrics were different but the story the same. I didn't find results until I used 'blew his horn so loud and shrill". Grandaddy called the farmer's wife Ol Granny Wibble Wobble. Has anybody heard that?

Re: Raynard. I can see how you can get frustrated; however, try to keep in mind a couple of things. (1) I did try the database first; however, perhaps my search parameters were more specific or vague than the search engine could handle. In any event, it didn't turn up (which actually seemed odd to me: I know very well how famous the song is. I though sure that it SHOULD have been there). (2) Some of us (me included) may be new at this. I will endeavor to play by the rules and be as polite as possible, but I sure I'm not the only neophyte who may at times require some patience on the part of the "old timers."

alas, you are right...I should not have made my point 2) at all...my apologies....but I still stand by my claim that you..(and MANY others are asking in this forum for help,seemingly without attempting to look in this wonderful database first...the search feature will find almost anything if you know ANY words or the title or the subject...I have see many posts from Susan of DT which begin "it's in the database".. she is a very polite and patient lady, it seems, and I commend her...and in the future, I shall try to refrain form this sort of answer and "if I cant say anything nice, don't say anything at all" do notice, however, that the phrase you clicked on to get here was "Can't find it in the database? Try posting a request in our new discussion forum." So, for the last time, I repeat myself-LOOK in the database! THEN ask! (as for being bravely anonymous, would you have respected my point more if it had my name and address attached??It is a bit like wanting to tell a good friend that they have B.O., or bad breath...sometimes you just want to make a point and not let 'personality' enter the picture..I think that, properly used, anononymity can be preferable. I learned a different version than the one listed in the DT. I learned it from the group "Young Tradition" or Pete Bellamy (I can't remember which.) The tune is different as well.

1) It's a traditional song...it's in the database!...Please USE the database search!!! You could find it under hte title "The Fox" , or by searching on 'chilly' or 'fox', or several other words..

2) So many people know this one that you could go out on the street corner and ask passers-by....it makes me wonder where you've looked!!!

I have been looking for the lyrics to this for some time. I remember the Smothers Brothers singing it when I was a little kid in the '60s, but I only remember snatches.
