Subject: Jed Marum - a New CD!
From: Paul Mills
Date: 07 Aug 04 - 10:13 PM

As I write this, Jed Marum is driving up from Texas (due here in Toronto late tomorrow afternoon) to record a new CD with me here at the Millstream. Of course I'm thrilled! Jed is a great artist. I'll be forever thankful to Rick Fielding for introducing us.

While Jed's here, we'll be having a couple of gatherings I'm sure and Toronto area Mudcatters (plus a couple of out-of-towners) will no doubt be out in profusion. Bev and I are actually hosting a house concert featuring Jed next Sunday (Aug 15). Anyone interested can call us at 416 289 2776 for details.

Hope to see some of you here!

Cheers,

Paul

I'll ask Jed if he would be willing to share a sneak preview with the Cat. We'll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, any Toronto area Catters interested in coming out for the house concert next Sunday? Weather permitting, we'll have it outdoors in our spacious backyard. Of course, we'll invite the neighbors.

Meanwhile, here's a HOT NEWS FLASH!! Jed and I will be appearing on Heather's radio show (Acoustic Harvest) tonight at 7:00 PM EDT

And if I can slip a post in here amongst all this clammoring... I may be the only person on Mudcat who listened, but I thought it was a mighty fine show. You came across loud and clear. I just KNEW you all were sitting there leaking when Jed sang "The Locket," because I was. I loved the Spanish one (that I can't pronounce, let alone remember the title of). It just gets better and better. It also wouldn't bother me a bit if "Prayer from Little Round Top" or "Look Ahead, Tommy" found their way onto a new, more 'produced' CD.

And Jed, what your Dad said about other people's songs - I like them, but I like yours, and your CDs are the first place anyone's going to hear them. So there!

Wonder where Mick got to and whether Windows ate his computer again.

This is Jed on Paul's PC

We've added Tommy to the list. Good idea, Jeri - thanks!

We're hunkered down, working - and enjoying it - but both of us are sick! I told Bev this morning that I wasn;t worried becassue I usually through off a cold quickly - she reminded me, thhat this was a Candian cold, and they make 'em tougher up here!

It could be return trip for vocals ... but we'll see how my throat is in a week. We may be OK.

I'm looking forward to seeing you Jeri - Mick too; where is that guy??? Also, Chance was talking about sneaking up to Toronto ... Marion, any other MC'ers going to be around?

Hi Jed. I hope your voice is feeling better soon - and that you make a return trip anyway.

I asked six people along (1 MC'er, 5 civilians) and got a no, a no, a no, a probably not, a lack of response, and another lack of response. Frigging Woods. I'm still somewhat optimistic about the probably not though.

So what did Papa Marum say about "other people's songs"?

Marion (moving back to Toronto on the 13th, quelle timing)

Don't forget Little Round Top. There's a heck of a fiddle solo opportunity in that one. (I don't know when to quit - haha.)

I talked to Heather earlier, and will be getting into the Big T the same day as the Big Mick. Heather said she talked to his Layabout self earlier today, so he hasn't been abducted by aliens or anything.

I would have posted earlier, but there were thunderstorms and hail, and after all that stopped, my ISP was down for a while. Both of you, drink lots of water, take some vitamin C, and get better quick!

I'm afraid the folk gods were not with us this week - Jed and I sick as dogs and to add to it all, my digital recorder decided to get ornery! Got the thing fixed but we lost a good three hours today! OY! Those of you coming to T.O. expecting to hear a finished CD should not hold your breath. This one's going to take some time, but, by gum, it's going to be worth it! This is, in my opinion, an overall better collection of songs than the last one (Soul of a Wanderer) and Jed's an even better performer than he was then!

Stay tuned!

Cheers,

Paul

So how goes the Battle of Bacteria, the Siege of Snot, Viral Victimization, etc? I'll be there tomorrow night. I don't care about catching your diseases, just hope they let you feel up to being social. You know what they say: "What don't kill you...can make you sick as hell." I hope Bev has avoided catching the plague.

Mick's on LRP (long range patrol) in Real Life, but he may actually show up too. It'd be nice, but not necessary, if he would call be before he leaves. Maybe tonight, because I've got errands to run and crap to get out of the car (because the border guys will look in the back and think I'm moving up there). I'll see him soon enough anyway. I'll give Heather a holler tonight.

Paul, as for "Those of you coming to T.O. expecting to hear a finished CD," I didn't expect it the last time! I'll be happy just to see you guys - anything else is gravy.

See y'all (and any "y'all"s that aren't posting here) soon.

How the heck did the house concert go? (Or did it go?)

I am alive and well and getting ready to hit the road tomorrow about mid day.

The computer gods have laid a load of aul shite on me again. Computer hard drive crash. I had a wedding picnic to pull off for my oldest daughter that took most of a week and a half, and that set back my getting the 'puter fixed. Parts are ordered and they will be in tomorrow, but I will be on the road heading for the rondezvous with my fellow Beef Brothers, Jed and Paul. And Jeri, who I have plays Sister Sledge to our layabout catter wallerin. Can't wait to see the lovely Heather, Michael, Rick, Steve, and friend Marion, as well as any other 'Catters in the area. And I am fairly breathless in anticipation of hearing what is done on this CD.

FWIW, I am going to be on Acoustic Workshop next Monday. Going to talk about Irish music in the US, do some songs, and maybe talk a bit about the solo project that I am in the very initial planning stages with Paul.

I will post more from T.O. Damn it feels good to be heading to Canada. I just love that place, and it's music.

All the best,

Mick

Thoughts after spending 3 days with Paul and Jed.

Being a folksinger means that you must open yourself up and expose very deep and personal feelings to others and hope that they respond in a positive way. Every so often someone comes along in this process that shares feelings with you that are so profound, yet so simple. These very special folks show you there soul, and when you see it, it almost blinds with its goodness. Such is Jed Marum, singer, songwriter and musician. Aside from being my very close friend, he is an extraordinary talent. This new CD allows you to glimpse into the heart and soul of a very special soul. And, Saints preserved, you will like what you see.

Under the guidance of Paul Mills, a true master of his craft and a great performer, this project took shape. I must tell you that Jed fearlessly lets you into secret spaces, and does so assured that you will relate. His love letter to his Mom, whom is stricken with Alzheimers, is a primer on the way one looks at these things. It is no secret that Jed and I are friends. But I must add that is also one that I genuinely admire. I believe that one day all of us that know him will be very proud of that fact.

While I am on the subject, let me just tell you that if you are a performing artist who is considering recording, you should consider Paul. He is more that just attentive, he is involved. He and Bev love the music, and it comes out in the quality of the tracks. You will be very glad you ordared it.

Little Brother Jed, this work is an amazing and successful effort to share who you are with the world. I beleve you will pass with flying colors

Folks, when this CD finally comes out, give it a listen. I believe that it will get much attention.

All the best,
Mick

Or Tuesday.
I just got home after spending way too much time prior to leaving on stuffing my face (Peameal and eggs. Any non-Canadians know what peameal is? I learned something.), 12th fretting and just shooting the breeze. Who cares? I enjoyed the time much more than if I'd been driving, and I missed most of the heavy traffic.

Had a flat tire and a coolant leak. Mick fixed the tire. There will be a THIRD photo of him lying down by a car at Mudcat when I get my photos sorted. I took the car down to the garage Rick alway went to. They checked it out completely (found nothing wrong), and gave me some advice, and wouldn't accept any payment. They also, despite the fact they'd known Rick for years, never knew he was a musician. I gave 'em a copy of 'Acoustic Workshop' and Heather gave me a replacement. I drove home, and nothing fell off or blew up.

Mick would tell you more, but his computer is screwed. He did some recording and a bit more hanging out with the Beef Bros than I did, but I spent a couple of lovely evenings at Paul and Bev Mills's's. Paul, if you read this, know that I really DO feel inspired to actually learn some of the songs I've written. These gatherings were wonderfully warm (actually, friggin' FREEZING, but nobody wanted to go inside). Heather put on one hell of a garden party on Saturday. Good food (chilli - appropriate!), great music, and friends that jes' don't get no betteer.

Paul let me hear the early stage of Jed's recording. He just keeps getting better and better, and I can't wait to hear how the finished product sounds.

OK, I'll bite -- please define peameal. (Is it anything like that UK delicacy, Mushy Peas?)

I am familiar with backbacon (what we call Canadian bacon in the States), but that's the extent of my expertise in Canadian cuisine.

Peameal Bacon is made from pork loins weighing 12-14 Lb. They are trimmed of all the fat and the bones are removed. The term peameal comes from the ground yellow peas with which the bacon was originally coated. This ensured better curing and shelf life and avoided bacterial problems. Over the years this tradition was changed to cornmeal, due to the availability of corn.

Or in other words, it's Canadian bacon/back bacon. The stuff we had at the restaurant was thick, though, unlike the thin slices we call Canadian bacon in the US. Big fat hunks o' ham. GUEST, thanks for the explanation. I never could have guessed how the name originated.

A magical two weeks with my Texas buddy Jed topped off with 2 or 3 musical gatherings involving fellow catters from hither and yon. Does it get any better than this? No, I don't think so!

The CD is a treat. Way more originals from Jed who is a way better performer than he was when we did "Soul of a Wanderer". This is one you'll enjoy, I know.

Thanks for the kind posts Mick and Jeri!

Bev sends her love.

Cheers,

Paul

It's better.
Soul of a Wanderer had some songs that I loved, and some that were OK. This describes most CDs I own and enjoy. This one seems more even in the "WOW!" factor, at a pretty high level. This describes the CDs I LOVE. You hear a song and think "Well, THAT'S the really good one" and then, you hear the next one, and the next one...

Probably not to everyone's taste, nothing is, but if you liked Soul, yer gonna be REAL happy with this one.

Paul (and Jed, and Mick), you guys need to get T-Shirts or hats or something. And if Mick is going to re-grow his ponis, maybe you ought to get yourself one too.

Well, I'm hoping to get back to Toronto in Oct to finish the project ... BUT we did take a few pics.

We're saving the really good ones for black mail!

When I saw this thread reappear, I was hoping it meant that the CD was out and available. Well, maybe next time. In the meanwhile, it's good to see those pix of you and your friends hard at work.

Website looks pretty slick, like it just got a makeover -- Nice!

I've got some photos too, you know! (Although nobody has headphones on in mine.)

Jed, just out of curiosity, which song or songs is Eve singing on? ;-)

Gotta second Jeri on the quality of this one. Wonderful work, and I am so proud to have a credit on it. And ...... drum roll, please ..... it features the debut of the second incarnation of The Beef Brothers. Rick, at his CD release, anointed Paul as the latest Beef Brother.

Jed, I am awaiting this one anxiously.

All the best,

Mick

Eve sang harmonies on The Locket and Chickahominy River. I haven't even heard 'em yet - but I love her voice, and I'm anxious to hear the result. I haven't heard Brian McNeills' tracks yet - either. And I have added one song to the list - the title track.

So I gotta get back to Toronto ...

Bev won, huh? (hehehe) I suspect you'll love what she does. I love her voice too, and I've heard her harmonies on other people's songs, both recorded and live recordings. Subtle but rich, and always spot on.

Is the picture on your website going to be on the cover on the CD? You could print the liner notes on a faded-out road map. DO put up the Beef shots, please.

We're still working on the cover ideas. Paul had a great one, that almost works ... I'm still thinking something along those lines. The website pics are ones my son Matt did.

I'll see if I can get the Beef Brothers up this week, sometime.

Paul and I restart our efforts on MILES FROM HOME this week. I can't wait!

We'll finish the recording part of this project over the next few days - and aim for release in March.

I've been beside myself, waiting to get back to it. It's definately been a form of torture!

Anyway - more soon ...

MILES FROM HOME

We're all but finished with the record. 15 tracks recorded mixed, mastered - artwork complete. Two songs will be altered for the final product - we're replacing their bass tracks, otherwise we're done. Now comes the business preparations for release (March '05).

I love this record. It has been an interesting journey making it - much fun, much work, much joy and, I must admit; much worry ... BUT I am thrilled with the result and I consider myself blessed to have worked with such lovely people on this project ... and to have many of my Mudcat friends involved directly and indirectly.

A very special thank you to Paul and Bev Mills for their kind hospitality, their strong encouragement and their warm friendship. We worked intensely, and shared much good time together; over meals, humor, politics, and family news.

I cannot do him justice with these few words but I have to try ... Paul is simply a genius artist at this music production business - his technology skill, his artistic vision, his diligence and his refined musical ability make him a rare gift to the folk music world. I am surely blessed to have worked these few projects with him, and truly grateful for the opportunity.

So, anyway - for those who continue to ask ...Where's the Beef?

Here ya go!

Thanks all to Mudcatters - Jeri, Martin Gibson, Joanna, Duckboots, just-a-picker, Marion, Peter, who did I miss? Thanks all for visiting during the August trip.

ALSO thanks to Big Mick and Eve Goldberg for adding your strong beautiful voices in harmony to the record.

The thanks goes to you, and to Paul. It is such an honor for me to be allowed to throw a little voice into these very important recordings. I hate to puff up a little brother (you folks know how they act!) but I believe that in the fullness of time these will be important works. It is such a thrill to be included in some small way.

I want to add a hearty second to Jed's observations on Paul and Bev. An important part of the artistic process is that one must feel comfortable. If that is the case, then Millstream is like heaven to the performing artist. One doesn't just feel comfortable there, one feels at home in the caring embrace of these folks. The added plus is that they truly love the music, and enjoy having musicians around. I can scarce find the way to describe sitting in that backyard on a warm summers night, among friends from Toronto and elsewhere, for no other reason than to enjoy one anothers company and music. It is a feeling, an experience, that I would wish for all of you.

I consider myself one very fortunate Michigan boy that Paul will be producing my solo project. This man is simply the best there is.

Jed, I can't wait for this one to come out. I have near played the hide off the others, and I believe this one will be the best one yet.

And I love that picture!! We simply must do a Beef Brothers show someplace....hahahahahaha!!!

All the best,

Mick

Jed, did you really meet Martin Gibson, or are you confused? Did you forget Rick Speyer's (author of great song, "The Ballad of Martin and Gibson") name.

I can't wait for it either (but I must). Bill, down at the "Crossroads" country store wants it, and I also hope it makes it to the local radio stations' folk shows.

Now, about the photo...
Listen, you guys all look great, but Jed, while you're up there, would you please get Paul's facial fuzz more into line with the Beef Bros image? I don't actually know that it's necessary, and I may be being too anal about it. You also ought to get matching black and white cow patterened shirts, and possibly practice those dance steps a bit more.

Just saw Jed off at the airport this afternoon after finishing up mixing, mastering and graphics on "Miles From Home". It's been a thrill to help Jed out with this project. It's a fabulous collection of songs well-written and beautifully performed. A producer just couldn't ask for more! I know you'll all enjoy this CD when it hits the stands.

Jed has become a close friend through the making of these two albums we've done together and I'm proud to be, along with Mick, a fellow Beef Brother (thanks, Rick). As for the facial fuzz, Jeri, it's simply part of the new image...get used to it. And I certainly have to veto the cow patterned shirts! My other brothers may want these but I rather doubt it! I suppose you'll be looking for cow-patterned tights next to show off the improved "dance steps" even more - in your dreams girl! By the way, I'm really enjoying your demo...more later.

Paul

Hot pants, Paul. Tights aren't macho enough.

I'm dying to see what the cover looks like. I figure a nice crossroads in the middle of nowhere, a signpost with old, weathered arrowed with town names pointing in every direction, Jed sitting at the base of said post, playing guitar, and a dead car on a jack with a large Irish guy underneath, changing the tire. I have some pictures you could Photoshop in. Oops. I see you've finished with the graphics. Never mind.

But, Paul said OTHER brothers....and the Cow print shirts would really accent the Beef motif. But I suppose the self effacing image you wish to present prefers something simpler. Kendall style leather hats to swat away pests may do the trick. And well fit jeans are way more imaginative.

Jeri, I think the man doth protest too much, given then number of photo's we both have he seems to enjoy lying under cars.

Jed, I'm really looking forward to this one. Thought of you a few times at Getaway. But selfishly figured finishing this was way more important..

You won't be disappointed Tink. He has one song on this collection that I am absolutely touched by. From what I have heard, this is his best yet.

As I said before, you will want to listen for the song Jed wrote about his relationship with his beloved Mom, as she progressed through Alzheimers. Not only will the beauty of the song strike you, but his "take" on dealing with it will have you pondering the issue even while it isn't playing. Jed and I became friends and kindred spirits fairly quickly. When I hear this song, and ponder the wisdom and healthy way he deals with this, I can only tell you that I am touched deeply. I have said before that Jed puts his soul into every cut. But for me, on each of his CD's, there is that one or two tracks that reveal the wise and gently soul lurking inside this wonderful artist. And so it is on this CD.

Another observation on Paul. One of the reasons why these CD's will, in my estimation, be successful and acclaimed, is because Paul and Jed are attuned to one another in a very special way. When I am in the studio with them, it is a palpable and warm feeling. This is part of Paul's genius. He is able to lock into what you are trying to accomplish, help you clarify your message, and listen with the ears of a seasoned professional. That all by itself makes for world class recording. Factor in his friendship and interest in Jed's work, Jed's amazing wordsmithery, and you have the ingredients for a real treasure of a recording. Makes me very anxious to get started on my own with him. And we will, of course, have the Beef Bros. playing a role there as well.

BTW Tink and Jeri, I am beginning to question how it is that all these cars seem to get maladies that require me sticking my arse up in the air, and crawling around on the ground. Methinks something doth not smell rightly.

All the best,

Mick

Congratulations Jed! I'm sure it's going to be great. My fiddler friend Shawn was saying yesterday that he wants to hear "Con Este Beso" again. I hope your drive home was good.

And if Jeri was right that you confused Rick Speyer with Martin Gibson, that's actually pretty funny...

Re; MILES FROM HOME - just a quick update:

I received the final production master this week of the new CD and have been listening carefully ever since. I love it! I can't wait to get it out - but I'll have to wait until March.

Tom Leighton and Paul Mills and I will be doing the North Texas Irish Festival '05 (NTIF) together in March - to release the album. I am really looking forward to those shows - NTIF '05 will focus on the Irish roots of Bluegrass music, so the release of MILES FROM HOME is timely. Sould be a great time!
