A piper I met while on vacation in Chicago is competing at the All-Ireland Fleadh. I was wondering if anyone knew of a website that posted results of the competition. I'd like to hear how this kid did.

Can't afford to go this year... the new 'old' house has taken it's toll on the old bank account. I hope you are getting in training for it, it's apretty feisty festival! Full on!

So, I'm going to have to curtail my normally 3+ trips to Eire down to 1 this year, over to Belfast to see some pals.

Sigh.... Have a good time - enjoy the music!

Yes members of the Jackfield Branch (Telford UK) will be in Clonmel.

I am taking 3 members in my car and we are staying at the same farm as last year... 15 miles out. Its a bit of a treck but the family were such fun and we met a lot of the locals so we are going back again.

Looking forward to the sessions and the craic and listening to a few of the competitions.

Plus seeing a friend or two from other branches.

Cant wait to see the coast of Ireland come into view from the ferry... even tho Im SHropshire born and bred and its my kids that have the Irish blood not me.

As all ye fleadh heads know, the Fleadh Cheoil NahEirann is kicking off the end of this coming week, in Clonmel Co Tipperary, Irl. Gauranteed to be a great weekend of music, drink, singing, drink, and general craic (and drink)

Although I personally think Clonmel is NOT the best town for it, we hope this year, will be as mighty craic as most other years,
I post this thread because i was horrified to learn of a few (especially english/Welsh/Scot) folkies never heard of this event which to me seems imposible,

So any free to roam folkies looking for somewhere this next weekend 27th Aug>, as Christy Moore sings, grab the wife, throw the kids in the Datsun..." and head for clonmel Co Tipp for Fleadh Ceoil NaHeirann.

(they make a bloody good cider there as well called Bulmers, But FAR better than the english bulmers, I believe it's exported as Magners, though this is purely incidental to me) (I like Guinness!!!)

Oh I am sooooo envious! Can't go this year. No money basically. I have never been to one but am putting it in my diary for next year. Have a fantastic time! Went to the Feakle festival a few years ago which was brilliant.

Might be a bit late if ye are planning to go now as all the accommodation is booked out over a radius of 20 miles. Tremendous festival to visit though even for people who are not into trad. Lovely atmosphere on the streets during the day if the weather is anyway reasonable but can become a bit messy late at night.

Went last year to Clonmel. Prefer Listowel, but better food at Clonmel.

All accommodation is booked as soon as the venue is announced but Fleadh office (in Clonmel)usually has cancellations.

Gig Rig usually has some interesting performances. Also local venues. Danu in concert this Mon night, but Im travelling then so will miss them.

Also there are workshops all week by good musicians.... think you have to book in advance tho.

Counting the hours now!

Perhaps see some of you there, will take my Mudcat badge with me and will be playing concertina in sessions.

attended the fleadh last year in Clonmel, if you are planning to arrive fri or sat AM the campsites should be ok (depending) Last year they had 2, one in the racecourse, one in the rugby club, racecourse on the by pass, rugby club just off it. (providing you don't mind camping that is!!)

I pesonally would opt for the rugby club (providing they are using the same pitches again) as it was more organised and comfortable (and had a bar!!) unlike the racecourse, from which i met severel people who transferred sites because of the lack of any facilities. Also a local mini bus operated from the rugby club to the town centre every 15min for €2, handy as both sites are approx 20min walk from the town. Hard comparison to Listowel though, but everywhere would have that problem!

Ps. Apparantly a place just as you head into the town called Lyons does cracking food according to locals i met last year, am definetly going to pay a visit this year

They are running a Park & Ride on Sat & Sun from 3 sites to cut conjestion with parking.

Just got back this morning.

Had a great time. The four of us played in Gleesons bar on Friday. Earned free drinks and got photo in Irish Examiner!

Did a lot of walking around. Watched a few bits on the gig rigs. The youth groupai ceoil band drawn from previous medal winners was ace. Recognised several youngsters from the Echoes of Erin 2002 tour that we hosted at Oakengates Theatre in Shropshire.

Watched my Irish friend's daughter compete in the 12-16 whistle and she won!

Played in a wonderful session up in the hills (Sliabh na Mban)in a bar come shop like in the wild west, with pans and brushes, food, drink and warm welcome.

Also played at a party for a group of kids and parents from Ulster who were in a marching band. Again a great welcome and great music.

Wonder where it will be next year ?

HERE are the 2004 results.

Fliss, Letterkenny is one of the two towns bidding to host the 2005 fleadh. Can't remember the other contender. It will be decided within the next week or two I think. Accommodation for 2005 will be snapped up fairly quickly once the venue's been decided - in which case book for 2006 instead. The fleadh invariably stays at the same place for two years.

Ive done 2 years in Listowel at the same family house, followed by two years at Clonmel at the same farm. We usually find something.

Think Mayo is the other main contender, Kerry want it again, something about Ballybunion... but everyone says a non starter.

Most people would like it to be Letterkenny as Donegal is part of the traditional Ulster... not todays Ulster. So would bring the Fleadh within the area and please a lot of people. The Ulster folk we were with on the Sunday night explained all this to us.

My friend is trying to twist my arm to go to the Cork Jazz Festival in October.... If its during halfterm I may not be able to resist. Had a day trip to Cork last year and would love to go back. Not greatly into Jazz but it does sound good.

Fliss, It is still part of to-days Ulster, when our Gaelic football team won their Ulster Championship this year the defeated Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal on their way to the Trophy.
Ulater is very much a nine County unit were sport is concerned.
And while we are on the subject of the Fleadh, why not nominate Warrenpoint in the County Down as a very suitable location for the next Fleadh.

Fliss, I think Ballybunion is indeed the other contender, in which case I agree that Letterkenny must be the strong favourite.

Warrenpoint did put in a bid a few years ago and lost out by one vote. Part of me hoped they'd get it, as a fleadh in the six counties is long overdue. But part of me knew it would be a disaster as Warrenpoint has not got enough committed volunteers nor adequate facilities/accommodation. Ballycastle would be a better bet. Not only is there strong support for CCE and the music in the area, but also all the experience of major events like the North-West 200 road race and the Lammas fair - both of which attract many thousands of visitors, though not on the same scale as the fleadh.

My own choice would be Ballymena. OK it's mostly unionist turf of one shade of orange or another, but there are plenty of traditional-music enthusiasts on that side of the community, including an all-Ireland winner or two. Also there is strong support for CCE throughout the glens. In fact Portglenone, nearby, must have produced more all-Ireland winners per head of population than anywhere on earth.

What a bridge-builder it could be. And die-hard anti-republicans would just have to grit their teeth and think of all the cash flwoing into town with the fleadh....

Cash speaks volumes! But it would be great for Ulster to get the Fleadh.

Im secretary of Jackfield Comhaltas Branch. We need pursuading to stay as a COmhaltas Branch as we never get the Treoir, and feel very much isolated. WHereas in Ireland when we go to Fleadh we are greeted warmly and feel a part of things. Also feel that £300 a year for insurance is very steep for the UK branches as we dont have property or employ anyone like in Ireland... comments welcome!

Think I know you now by your name and comments. I'm one of the Newport lot (sue) though don't use my proper name here.

Ballina was a wonderful venue the last time I went there (it was my first Fleadh). But I think Ulster would be a fab option too - especially as I could see some family and friends at the same time at that one.

How come's you don't get your Treoirs up in Jackfield when us lot in sunny Wales get ours? Very very strange!

£300 a year for the insurance is very very steep, and I can't see why we can't go out for our own public liability quotes over here - but then that's something for another place to wonder about I thinks. It's one of the bug bears I think.

I can't understand how you are not getting the Treoirs though - have a word with the usual suspects and see if that works?

we're starting our classes back on the 21 of this month, a little late, but some of the other tutors are busy having holidays in Thailand - lucky toads.

Have u been in All Britain on bodhran? None of us had the time to compete this year.

We have a great practice session on Sunday mornings,,, all ages and instruments. Dont have individual lessons, but groups of instruments get together.

We go to a session of THursday evenings at the Boat Inn, Jackfield. Not a comhaltas session, but about half of us are members.

I manage to get over to the Lichfield session occasionally at the Horse & Jockey in Tamworth Rd. Nice grub there too!

I was at the Fleadh on the Thursday. There was music about but the atmosphere was very quiet! I then went on to lovely Dunmore East, Waterford where there was a small bluegrass fest.

PeterK's comments on Ballycastle and Ballymena remind me that Comhaltas used to organise an annual Fleadh Rinnce 'us Amhráin (dancing and singing)at Ballycastle. Recently the event has been moved, to Castlewellan I think. The first times I went to Ballycastle for the fleadh, pubs weren't allowed to open on Sundays in the north. But there were often ways round the restrictions (one shebeen I remember in Belfast was in the back of a sweet shop and was called the Sweetie Bottle). I recall one Ballycastle pub opening an illicit beer garden on the Fleadh Sunday. One of the first sights I saw when I followed the music through the back gate was a woman dancing around with a policeman's hat on her head. The RUC man turned out to be sitting at a table, well tipsy; I suppose that made sure the publican wouldn't be prosecuted.

Yes, I too remember ingenious workarounds designed to defeat the restrictive licencing laws that once prevailed in the north. (It's not just a six-counties thing. I also remember when a legal pint could not he had after 10pm in Edinburgh, even during the festival weeks.)

And yes, Fliss, I was reminded about Ballina's bid soon after I posted. They will be strong contenders. But Letterkenny has put together an impressive package and will make much of the fact that the fleadh hasn't been back to Ulster since Buncrana 20-something years ago.

What's the Lichfield session like, and where is Jackfield? I'm usually in north Notts, but I get up and down the A38 a fair bit.

Lichfield session is very good. Its once a fortnight on a Monday. Chris the landlord is Vince Jordan's brother. Lots of boxes of different sorts. Some singers. Bar gets quite packed.

The alternate MOn is at Spotted DOg at Digbeth. Have been occasionally but dont like driving into Brum.

Jackfield is on the River Severn in Shropshire downstream from Ironbridge. Its easy to get to from the M54.

Letterkenny in County Donegal is set to host the All-Ireland Fleadh in 2005 and 06.
An estimated quarter of a million music fans will flock to the Donegal town next year, it`s over 20 years from Buncrana in Donegal hosted the event, so at last the north of Ireland will be proud to do justice to a feast of music.

Thanks for the info Fliss. I remember Jackfield now, having been to a couple of conferences at Ironbridge. I fear it's a bit too far from home, but I'll try the Lichfield session sometime, even if it does include ";ots of boxes of different sorts"!
