I posted this on another forum, but I thought some Mudcatters might like to know about it.

Several weeks ago, on a Sunday morning, I was lucky enough to catch most of a Radio Scotland programme called "Songlines". it was about the song "Brother, an You Spare a Dime?", and features commentaries by singers, and writers about how the song arose, and what it has come to mean, and so on.

It was pretty interesting stuff, and I was full of determination to catch the programme again.

And then I promptly forgot all about it.


Then on Sunday past, I accidentally came across it again, and it was focussing on Billy Bragg's song "Between the Wars". Really good radio. 30 minutes well-spent.

Now, even if you don't want to hear about Billy Bragg's excellent song, you *will* want to hear the next programme. It features Hamish Henderson's "Freedom Come-All-Ye".

I have just been listening to the programme on "Freedom Come-all-ye". A wonderful piece of work. I would not have known about it were it not for the previous posting. Thank you kindly for bringing it to out attention. Go raibh maith agat.

Yeah - unfortunately I bloody forgot about it. IN my own defence, I was driving down the Great Glen from Inverness at the time, so the reception might have been a bit dodgy anyway.

I must remember to listen to the repeat tomorrow evening.

Also... contrary to what I asserted above, the "Listen Again" link online does not seem to produce anything apart from a remark that they cannot webcast it "for contractual reasons" ...

I'm glad to hear it was worth listening to.

I'm getting that message too. Thought at first it was discrimination against Sassenachs but if you can't listen to it in the Great Glen, where can you hear it?

If you are in a position to go online tomorrow evening (Monday) at 19:30 (UK time)

...you should be able to hear it live.

Or, if you have digital TV (UK) you may find that Radio Scotland is carried as one of the audio channels - ntl provide it.

I was rather pleased to hear the program today - Monday, having been unable to get it to replay - however - having managed to decypher the dots for 'The bloody fields of Flanders' just about right and then found that the words would not quite fit, I was rather miffed to discover that the song actually fits to a slightly different tune (Buss bonnie lassie) at a much slower beat.

Still it was interesting to hear something of the history of the song and its writer.
