HAUL HER AWAY (Little Sally Racket), as sung by Maddy Prior, on Bib & Tuck. The second time she sings the verse about Nancy Dawson, I can't get a line.

Little Nancy Dawson
Haul her away
She's got red flannel draws on
Haul her away
So says the old bosun
Haul her away
...................
Haul her away

It seems one of the words she sings is "knows". Please, help. Thank you. Roberto

i haven't heard Maddy Prior's version of this, but I sing the verse:

Little Nancy Dawson
Haul 'em away!
She's got her flannel drawers on
Haul 'em away!
Says our poor old bos'n
Haul 'em away!
To me holly hi ho
Haul 'em away!

Subject: Lyr Add: SALLY RACKET (from Louis Killen)
From: Roberto
Date: 10 Aug 04 - 01:09 PM

While waiting for someone that has Maddy Prior's CD and time and will to listen to the song and help me with the missing line, I also ask for a check for this transciption of a Louis Killen's recording of HAUL 'ER AWAY/HAUL HIM AWAY/LITTLE SALLY RACKET etc. I've put an "l" in the line "and a hauley high-l-O", becuse, differently from other recordings of the song, it seems he sings something like that, but I'm not sure. THanks. R

SALLY RACKET
Louis Killen, 50 South to 50 South, Louis Killen sings the Cape Horn Road, South Street Seaport Museum SPT-102, 1969

Little Sally Racket
Haul Him Away
She's pawned my best jacket
Haul Him Away
And she's lost the ticket
Haul Him Away
Yes and the hauley high-l-O
Haul Him Away

Oh, it's Little Kitty Dawson
Haul Him Away
She's got ren flannel drawers on
Haul Him Away
So says our ol' bosun
Yes and the hauley high-l-O
Haul Him Away

Yes, and Little Winnie Duckett
Haul Him Away
Oh, she washes in a bucket
Haul Him Away
She's a whore but she don't look it
Haul Him Away
Yes and the hauley high-l-O
Haul Him Away

And it's Little Kitty Carson
Haul Him Away
She got married to a parson
Haul Him Away
Now she's got a little barson
Haul Him Away
Yes and the hauley high-l-O
Haul Him Away

And it's Little Nellie Skinner
Haul Him Away
Oh, she says she's a beginner
Haul Him Away
She prefers it to 'er dinner
Haul Him Away
So it's up lads and win her
Haul Him Away

Oh, it's up me fightin' cocks, now
Haul Him Away
Yes, it's up and split them blocks, now
Haul Him Away
Oh, it's up boys and luff boys
Haul Him Away
And that'll be enough, boys
Haul Him Away

Maybe "and the hauley high-l-o" could be "and the hauley hilo"...

And I take the chance for a last call for Maddy Prior's CD.

All of these versions originate with that sung by A. L. Lloyd back in the '60s. They're nearly identical.

Lloyd sang "And a hauley hi-o!"

Stan Hugill knew some ribald verses. Did he ever sing them for anybody? If so, what were they?

I remember hearing this when down in deepest Cornwall in the late 60s

there was a verse:

Little Ruby Riddle
She broke her fiddle
Clean cross the middle

the responses were as given by Roberto, above

As it was for school children I supose any rude verses were either cleaned up or not sung. (I was on a Biolgy field trip, the effects of the Tory Canyon oil had played havoc with the local plant and animal life)

At the Shellback Chorus winter reunion this year, I sang a version with a verse for each of the ladies present (over 20 of them). many of the verses were a bit "near the knuckle" but only for rhyming purpose (of course)

Anne, I've always wondered how they calculated the effects of the Tory Canyon disaster - or did they just provide a Conservative estimate?

Haul me away!

Hugill cites the song as originating as a cargo-working song in Quebec and elsewhere. Several variants seem to have originated in the West Indies. He learned it from one of his primary sources, Harding.

Whall cites it as Cheer'ly Man, as does Colcord. She cites mention of the song in Dana's "Three years before the Mast."

The coastline was clean of the Tory Canyon oil spill when we arrived, just about, there were small blobs left under rocks - but the sea was clear and the sand was just sand - life was almost non existant - but there were just a few plants animals left - or perhaps they had been brought in. visiting a few years later there was little evidence of the mass extinction - but it must have been horrible to see everything lying dead and oily on blackened beaches.

Cheerly man is a different but related shanty - I used to use that for the main sail hoist and Haul em away for the fore sail, as there is a slower larger pull in Cheerly man and Haul em away is more suited to the faster lighter work of a fores'l. It was just me and a small yacht, but it was helpful to keep the rhythem slow enough to get both sails hoisted and still be able to walk back to the cockpit.

HAUL HER AWAY
As sung by Maddy Prior on "Bib & Tuck," 2002.

Little Nancy Dawson
    Haul her away!
She's got red flannel draws on
    Haul her away!
So says the old bosun
    Haul her away!
With a hauley high-o!
    Haul her away!

Little Betty Baker
    Haul her away!
She ran off with a Quaker
    Haul her away!
Guess her mum could shake her
    Haul her away!
With a hauley high-o!
    Haul her away!

Little Suzie Skinner
    Haul her away!
She said she's a beginner
    Haul her away!
She prefers it to her dinner
    Haul her away!
With a hauley high-o!
    Haul her away!

Little Kitty Carson
    Haul her away!
She ran off with a parson
    Haul her away!
And she's got a little barson
    Haul her away!
With a hauley high-o!
    Haul her away!

Little Dolly Ducket
    Haul her away!
She washes in a bucket
    Haul her away!
She's a tart but doesn't look it
    Haul her away!
With a hauley high-o!
    Haul her away!

Little Sally Racket
    Haul her away!
She tore her new jacket
    Haul her away!
And she never did regret it
    Haul her away!
With a hauley high-o!
    Haul her away!

Little Nancy Dawson
    Haul her away!
She's got red flannel draws on
    Haul her away!
So says the old bosun
    Haul her away!
And hey, she knows on
    Haul her away!

Up my fightin' cocks, boys
    Haul her away!
Up and split her blocks, boys
    Haul her away!
And we'll stretch her luff, boys
    Haul her away!
And that'll be enough, boys
    Haul her away!
