I can't say I know who wrote it, but I do remember it being on a solo album of Jerry Garcia's circa mid to late seventies.

Mid 70s does sound right. I got it from either Tom Dundee or Buck White and the Down Home Folks (now the Whites)Opened for 'em at a club in Rockford, Illinois 'bout then.

Johnnie Russell did a country song by that name in at least the mid 70's if not before.

It started:

Catfish John wasa river hobo, Livin' back the river bend.

My performance partner introduced me to this one, and he said he learned it off a Garcia/Grisman album of childrens' songs.

We play it, and give that credit, since we don't know who wrote it. We sure like to know, though.

As I said, Bob McDill wrote "Catfish John". Really.

(It's about an outhouse at the bottom of the Mississippi River!)

I think this belongs in the mixed up folk thread...with a title like "Mississippi Privy" or "House of the Sunken Moon" or something!

It was written in a hotel by Mr.Kearse, and I think a gentleman by the name of Steve Pittman, or Goodman, not sure on that a hundred percent. However, these gentelmen did not get credit for it, or I know atleast one didn't!!!
