Subject: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: MBSLynne Date: 13 Aug 04 - 04:44 AM So, if there is no official Sidmouth festival next year, which of you will be going anyway? I will be there whatever happens, and I know quite a few people of like mind, but the more of us there are, the better time we will probably have. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 13 Aug 04 - 04:56 AM I'm not going, its too far away. I might go if they move it a bit nearer. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Aug 04 - 05:10 AM If Linda and I can manage to book onto a caravan site, we'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Cllr Date: 13 Aug 04 - 05:20 AM I will be there but after having twenty one people Including myself stay at my flat (allbeit in shifts) I havewill cut down the numbers as it is too much grief (and fun. As I mentioned elsewhere out of the twenty one staying fifteen were mudcatters who mostly spent most of the festival in the middlebar at the Anchor. Cllr |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: The Barden of England Date: 13 Aug 04 - 05:41 AM I've got my space booked in an hotel on the Esplanade, so I'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Cheesy Date: 13 Aug 04 - 06:01 AM I have my B&B reserved, haven't paid a deposit yet - tbc, but will only go if there are going to be ceilidhs. |

Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Cllr Date: 13 Aug 04 - 06:08 AM Ha ha ha. A converstion was overheard in which Mr Heap said he would be going to sidmouth next year but he was going to spend all week in the anchor middle bar. Cllr |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Steve Heap Date: 13 Aug 04 - 06:25 AM I could have lied or on the other hand I have four fingers and one thumb |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Aug 04 - 06:41 AM I don't think I've heard Mr Heap sing since the days of "The Valley Folk" - they were an unacc. singing foursome consisting of Steve, John Dickinson, and Jean & Elaine Carruthers, originating from Bury Folk club. They made an excellent record (produced with the assistance of Bert Lloyd and called "All Bells in Paradise") of traditional english carols. I've still got a copy. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: MBSLynne Date: 13 Aug 04 - 07:21 AM Come on Steve, surely your curiosity would be too strong to stay away?? Looks as though we could have a good time. I think mention was made on one of the other Sidmouth threads of the dance director looking into the possibilities of getting something going, so there may be ceilidhs. And there's always no ceilidh in the ford..! Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 13 Aug 04 - 07:56 AM Never been to Sidmoth but could be tempted. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: fiddler Date: 13 Aug 04 - 08:01 AM well I think we ought to have a Sidmouth in Exile and visit the town 'en masse' on Thursday including Singing in the sea. B4 you all for lots of Reasons but it bears thinking about. We could parade round town, Ceilidh in teh ford - all in one afternoon and spend the rest of the week in a friendlier town elsewhere - but close!!! |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: el_punkoid_nouveau Date: 13 Aug 04 - 08:03 AM And hey, guess what? I might even be there! |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: fiddler Date: 13 Aug 04 - 08:03 AM Also I must admit after this year when every conversation came round to what about next year and what did I know about it I might like to miss it altogether! It's about 11.5 months off yet so we shall see - may take me boat on a jaunt with some other exiled folkies!!! All sorts of options. I am not going to get a soap box out. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Cats Date: 13 Aug 04 - 08:24 AM We will be. We'll probably divide ourselves between the Anchor and the Swan garden. Come on Steve, we all think you should come and enjoy yourself for once. No hard feelings. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Aug 04 - 09:23 AM Yes, Anchor, Swan garden, and the Newtown for me - perhaps the Bedford as well if there's anything happening there. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: MBSLynne Date: 13 Aug 04 - 09:30 AM It will be an interesting year. I might actually check out other places as well as the Anchor! Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Anne Croucher Date: 13 Aug 04 - 06:00 PM The motley morris is suposed to be 'on' for next year. I'm hoping to be able to go for the whole week. If there is a shortage of knowledgeable cotswold morrisers I could always teach long morris - the Northern sort, which would be ideal for processing - clogs are optional. I learnt it at school wearing plimsols. Anne |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Seaking Date: 13 Aug 04 - 07:19 PM As usual it will totally depend on my employer and my offshore rota as to whether I'll be there or not. I suspect next year could be a lot of fun so if I can be there I will.. Chris |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Aug 04 - 07:25 PM It might be fun to get to look at other bits of the town, take a trip out to Lyme Regis, visit the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary - even go for a paddle in the sea. And then on to Zeal maybe... I'll be surprised if I don't find myself in Sidmouth next August. |

Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:29 AM Like Mrs Duck ~ I've never been, but could be tempted too, especially if there's talk of some Morris taking place, as well as lots of singing. Looking forward to further info. M |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Ndolo Ojukwe Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:46 AM The Mid-African Kambala Obongo dancers hope to make their first appearance at Sidmouth in 2005. As has been our practise for many years we shed our garments during our routines inviting members of the audience to participate. We look forward to "jamming" with some of your Morris teams, them with their wooden staves and us with our spears and pangas. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Seaking Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:55 AM That's the first 'must see' sorted for next year... |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 18 Aug 04 - 06:08 AM One assumes that they will be dancing at the "observatory" Now, where did I put my coat? |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Aug 04 - 07:57 AM Mairi there's always lots of singing at Sidmouth and there will still be next year Er...Ndolo....just how many garments do you shed?!? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Ndolo Ojukwe Date: 18 Aug 04 - 08:06 AM Them all of, but not necessarily in that order. They are all made in the traditional way from veldt grass and reed and it is most important we do not perform in the vicinity of open fires. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,ConcertinaChap Date: 18 Aug 04 - 08:13 AM Well be there twice (counting the Radway reunion in February). |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Aug 04 - 10:15 AM And you encourage audience participation. Sounds VERY interesting! If you are 'jamming' with Morrismen you must need to be very careful of their stick dances! Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Ndolo Ojukwe Date: 18 Aug 04 - 10:41 AM Lynne, As you am seeing on my first letter we are there with our spears and pangas. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 18 Aug 04 - 11:31 AM Of course it couldn't be the observatory, it must be the BLACKmore gardens. I know that's not PC but when did a folkie ever care about things PC when your average trad ballad usually contains murder, rape, incest, matricide, fratricide, patricide, suicide, elopement and stealing sweeties from children. Should panga swinging dances be encouraged amongst partially clothed mid-african tribesmen? Heavy panga, sweaty palm - the results do not bear thinking about. How many jewish mid-africans have you seen? No doubt there will be Health & Safety implications. Is it legal to import veldt grass under EU rules> I've found me coat! |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: GUEST,Ndolo Ojukwe Date: 18 Aug 04 - 11:55 AM The dancers are really looking forward to Sidmouth, especially the group, new to us, "The Health and Safetys". We have never heard them before. Are they also dancers and singers? Are they like the French World Music Chanteurs, "Les Sans Risques" who perform all the days covered in the cottony wool? Also, would someone advise us the best way to come. We have heard that the tunnel under the channel method has become difficult in this past year. In all the years of Obongo dancing there have been few instances of anything being cut off with the panga and regarding the veldt grass, we grow it on our form of "set-aside" veldt instead of grazing cattle and it appears this suits the EU. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Aug 04 - 01:40 PM I have a feeling advice on how to come may not be allowed on here! What does one do with a panga? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: *Laura* Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:15 PM I'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Seaking Date: 18 Aug 04 - 05:45 PM with your panga ? |
Subject: RE: Who will be going to Sidmouth next year? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Aug 04 - 06:57 PM I hope to be there too as we have the relatives in town and always come down to see them at some stage in the year. John in Hull, we come all the way from Scotland as do others, despite the fact that there is a week-long festival in Ayrshire (The Common Ground) running at the same time (but only for the last 3 years! - a mere toddler yet!)In Hull you're half-way there! |
