Subject: Lyr Req: dz the old tom cat still spoon upon the
From: GUEST,Louie Blyton
Date: 14 Aug 04 - 12:44 AM

An old song my father used to sing included these lyrics:

Have they still got the lodger in the top back room
Still without a carpet on the floor?
Does the old tom cat still still spoon upon the mat
With the ginger cat that lives next door?

Anyone remember the rest of the lyrics? Cheers, Louie

From:
Robson, E. W., and M. M. Robson. The Film Answers Back: An Historical Appreciation of the Cinema. London: John Lane, 1947, page 78:

...Is the old house still in the same old place
With the same old picture on the wall?
Does father wear the same old trousers?
Mother the same old shawl?
Do you still keep a lodger in the top back room,
Still without a carpet on the floor?
Does the old tom-cat still spoon upon the mat
With the ginger-whiskered cat next door?...

[I still don't know the title, writer, artist, tune, origin, or any more lyrics.]

Thanks for the extra few lines, anyway--I remember them too, now you've jogged my mind!

PS--If you're interested in hearing the tune, I put a quick mp3 of what I remember HERE.
(Scuse the scratchy voice ;))

is the old house where it used to be
are the same old pictures on the wall
does father still wear the same old trousers
mother wear the same old shawl
have you still got the lodger in the top back flat
still without the carpet on the floor
does the old tom cat still spoon upon the mat
with the ginger cat that lived next door

This song has gone through four generations of my family. It's great for singing on long car journeys to keep cjhildren amused. They like it because it tells a stoy.

I would be interested in it's origins.

The version I know goes:

So is the old house
Still in the same place?
The same old pictures on the wall?
Does father still wear the same old trousers
Does mother wear the same old shawl
Do you still keep a lodger in the top back room,
the same old carpet on the floor,
does the old tom cat still sleep upon the mat
with the ginger cat that lives next door.

And then, it went into this other part that went:

Waloo waloo waloo malloo
She had a fine tattoo
Just like the ocean blue
There was a man a silly man who followed her 500 miles
to see if he could see the sea
to watch the tide go out.

Is the old home
in the same place
and are the same old pictures on the wall
does father still wear the same old trousers
mother wear the same old shawl
is the lodger still up in the top back room
and is the same old carpet on the floor
does the old tom cat
still spoon upon the mat
with the ginger headed cat next door

We used to sing something similar to the first half of this song on Sunday nights in the "Crown" Lixwm near Holywell around 1970. I can't remember having heard the second half but we then followed up with:-

Good bye my mother-in-law I've had enough of your old old jaw
Good bye my mother-in-law good bye.

I think we repeated the first four lines as a chorus and then followed up with:-

Little fly upon the wall. Ain't you got no sense at all.
Don't you know it's just been plastered.
Come off there you stupid fly.

There may have been more but I can't remember if there was.

This is wonderful. I posted the last two lines by chance to see whether anyone knew the rest and there it was. This is a song my father sang tome when I was child, more than sixty years ago. Many thanks and a merry Christmas to you all.

When we were kids our parents used to sing us this song. Just slightly different from above.
It's the old home,
It's the same place,
Same old pictures on the wall.
Father still wears the same old trousers,
Mother wears the same old shawl.
Still with the lodger in the top back room,
Still with the carpets on the floor.
It's the old tom cat still spoons upon the mat
with the ginger headed cat from next door.

I attempted "way back machine" Library of Congress (USA) ....to bring up Louie Bryton's audio clip. His Austrailia link is dead.

Does the UK have an internet archive?

The French have an astounding library.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

When I was 17, my boyfriend's elderly dad, used to sing it in the pub, next to his house. On Saturday night, they always had a sing-song, which I loved. His version was,
   It's the old song,
   in the old place,
same old picture on the wall.
Father wears the same old cady (cap)
Mother wears the same old shawl.
Still got the lodger in the old back room
Still without the carpet on the floor
   Does the old Tom cat,
   Still spoon upon the mat,
With the ginger cat that lives next door
I still sing this version, to my grandchildren, now I'm 68!
The village where I grew up, had regular concerts, where the old
Music Hall songs were sung!

My Auntie used to sing this song to me. She was from North Wales U.K.

In the old home,
In the same place,
with the same old pictures on the wall
Father wore the same old trousers
Mother wore the same old shawl
and the lodger slept in the upstairs room
without any carpet on the floor
and the old tom cat
came spooning on the mat
with the ginger headed cat from next door.
