I shall be in both Hong Kong and Singapore in November, and one of the things I want to buy Duty free, is a MD Player/Recorder. I want one that has renewable batteries, as I don't want to get into the iPOD situation, with batteries I can't replace myself.
I've been looking at Sony in particular, and don't know which is best. I've looked at the following MZB100,MZ N10,MZ NH900S,MZ NHF 800, and the MZNH1, and I'm lost.
Can anybody advise me please? Also which is the cheapest place out of the two, to buy one?

I have an older Sony MZ-R30 md recorder/player. It works great, but watch out for these flaws possibly also in newer models
1) the control buttons are very small and fragile, can become internally misaligned with the internal switches.
2) the small input/output jacks can introduce noise and static if not cleaned and handled carefully.
3) some of the control/programming sequences are very awkward to execute.
4) the unit is subject to microphonics (phisical noise) when recording or playing back.

Also check out the built-in copyright protection features, which in some older machines will prevent you from making multiple digital copies even of you own originial material.

On the plus side, the editing capabilities of the larger (non portable) machines can be awesome. Dance music can be programmed to repeat so seamlessly that dancers don't even notice what's hapenning. They are also great for theater, sound effects, etc.

Now... go HD (Hi Density MD) if you're going to go MD at all... 1 gig of space on a disk... about 45 hours of music.. data transfers... easy uploads of recorded material to your PC.... (No stupid copyright feature)

Make sure it has a USB port... Make sure it has both a mic in and a line in... make sure it has a back-lit remote...

I'm likely gonna be getting a Sony MZ-NH900 some time in the near-ish future to replace my old 707...

Happy MDing!
