This is the 14th year for this festival, held a few miles from where Hank was born and raised.

Hank Snow was also one of my heroes. Unfortunately I saw him in one of his last Opry performances, a shadow of the great that he was who could not remember words and kept dropping his pick. Very sad. but I did get to see him much earlier in his career. A great lyrical phraser, very under-rated flat-picker, and one who chose fine songs to sing. Interestingly, Hank Snow and Elvis were both managed simultaneously by Col. Tom Parker and often toured together in the mid-1950s.

Hank discovered Elvis and brought him to Nashville where he introduced him to Tom Parker, who was at the time his (Hank's) manager. Hank's intention was that he and Parker would co-manage the still unknown "King" but Parker signed Elvis to an exclusive contract cutting Hank out. Hank never forgave Parker.
Yes, Hank was a great picker as well as a singer. He and Chet recorded some great guitar duets.

With the bad rugs they would have been eligible for the PBS fund raising concerts of old folkies.

Seriously---Hank Snow---what a great talent. Did I ever love Movin On and Golden Rocket---and---oh, hell, mostly all of his material. Did some great Pop Music too---sounded as good as Frankie to me.

I still hear certain intonations and accents of his in the singing of Jimmie Dale Gilmour.

After trying singing at the basket houses and open stages in New York and pretty much living in Central Park one summer (1964), I took a Grayhound to Nashville and saw Hank at the Opry in the old Ryman. He said he was heading to the Illinois State Fair. I was heading back to Chicago then, so I went to the fair first and heard him again. His example showed me the importance of making sure people heard every word clearly. A fine singer.

Who was taller, though, Hank or Little Jimmy Dickens??

Thanks for the info.
I had the privilege of opening for him at the Liverpool Empire & London Palladium. He was a very nice guy to my pal Nick & I ( possibly 'cos we did a lot of his stuff ).
I don't think Jimmie Dickens was taller, they were both vertically challenged.

The Festville is only minutes from my residence and is a great success. Would guess there are well over 500 RV's parked at the site already. And many more people will make use of the local nearby accommodations. Motels, Hotels and B & B's. several members of Hank's backup group are here. Katon Roberts (30 years with Hank Snow). There are still severeal people living in this area who played for Hank Snow in the early years.

This festival was great right through. If you love "old country" it was the place to be! Two members of Hank's band "The Rainbow Ranch Boys" were there. Roger Carroll (bass guitar) and Kayton Roberts (steel guitar) played backup for any of the performing groups wishing them to. They hardly left the stage all day Saturday.
   Johnny White from Massachusetts gave a great yodeling performance. Vic Aalders (Hank's brother-in-law) also played. Joyce Seamone also performed several times and was inducted into the Nova Scotia country music Hall of Fame.
These are only a few that I mention, but there were many others.

Was just in Bridgewater afew weeks ago. Love passing that way. Any first timers in the area HAFTA stop in for a bite at the River Pub..amazing food!!!!.especially the Herb/Cheese bread!!...Slainte!

A very good guitar picker and singer.Back in the day I heard his singing many times.I especially liked "Moving On", "The Girl in the Blue Velvet Band" and "Rainbow at Midnight".His name brings back fond memories of sitting by the old battery radio and listening to him sing.

I may have told this story before but in case there are folks on this new thread who haven't heard it, here goes: There is this young chap who lives a few miles from me by the name of Cecil Gibbons. Now Cecil back when the war broke out (No.2 that is.)was touring the maritimes with his band and was scheduled to play in Halifax at the hockey rink. The Halifax Form I believe it was called. Well Celil came down with a terrible cold and had to cancel. A young and up coming no name country singer took his place.
Now Cecil still plays darts and can easily drink me under the table. Topical tom knows this gentleman as well. Cecil is still playing and singing at every party he can go to and plays in all the hospital, nursing homes, senior citizen homes and our Veteran Hospital on the Island of Montreal.

Great story Adrien! For many years Hank was just a "boy from home" and even after he became world famous he didn't get the recognition that he deserved from locals. Give my best to Cecil!

A local musician and I have often shared our admiration for Hank Snow. He is a fine singer and guitar picker in Hank's style. He won the Hank Snow singing contest several years back at the Hank Snow festival. In his prime, which lasted for quite a few years, Hank was an excellent singer. Every word was clearly sung and he had a knack for selecting strong material. I still listen to old Hank Snow recordings and am never disappointed. In every song the voice and accompaniment enhance the lyrics and melody. In my opinion, Hank Snow is one of the all time greats.

His diction was excellent, his picking was outstanding and his voice was as good as his choice of material which was top quality.
Other than that, he was about average.

Near as I know, he was a nice guy. My old man used to do some "security work" at some of his shows here and he got to play and sing a few times. Hank always was gracious with letting locals do some tunes between sets. Long before my time, but my old man thought the world of him.
